I directed the Metallurgical Laboratory in Chicago where Fermi built the first nuclear reactor under the squash court. I was responsible for the decision to proceed to plutonium production. I supported the use of the bomb against Japan. I have thought about that decision every day since. Was there a better choice available to us in August 1945? That is the question I cannot answer with certainty.
