There are transitional forms between the metals and the non-metals, between animals and plants, between mammals and birds; the improbability of a sharp cleavage anywhere in Nature may henceforth be taken for granted. And when we have found the people in the middle region — for they are there, and they are many — I shall ask you the question the doctors never ask, which is not whether they may be permitted, but what work they do that the society could not do without.
