I coined the term radioactivity and found that it came from the atom itself — not from any chemical reaction between atoms. This was the first evidence that the atom had an interior. I isolated radium and polonium from pitchblende by processing tonnes of ore by hand. My notebooks are still too radioactive to handle without protection.
