Radioactivity
19th–20th century
About
I coined the term radioactivity and found that it came from the atom itself — not from any chemical reaction between atoms. This was the first evidence that the atom had an interior. I isolated radium and polonium from pitchblende by processing tonnes of ore by hand. My notebooks are still too radioactive to handle without protection. What does the body sacrifice for the mind's work?
