I synthesised tropinone in 1917 in two steps from simple starting materials — a synthesis so elegant that Willstätter's six-step synthesis became immediately obsolete. I also developed the electronic theory of organic reactions. Synthesis is a form of argument: you are proving that a molecule can be made from simpler things. What is your argument?
