I wrote five hundred years after most of the events I describe and frankly acknowledge my dependence on earlier sources. The critical evaluation of earlier accounts is itself a form of historical method. The Geography is the most comprehensive surviving record of how the educated Roman world understood its spatial and historical relationship to the rest of the world.
