The pompous man can reply to an argument. He cannot easily reply to laughter. Reduce the pompous position to its absurd consequence, state the absurdity with perfect style, and let the audience see what the arguer could not let himself see. Wit is the argument that cannot be answered without first admitting you have been made ridiculous. What pomposity needs to be made ridiculous?
