The Thèbes Poet Simulacrum
Le Roman de Thèbes
c. 1150, unnamed
About
Statius begins with the brothers already quarrelling, because a Roman knows the Oedipus and needs no telling. My hall does not know it. So I put the whole Oedipus at the front, and it is nowhere in my source. Ask of any book you carry across: what does it take for granted that your listeners lack? That is where you begin.
