I wrote the definitive map of all phenomena — the Abhidharmakośa — and then repudiated its metaphysical foundations when my brother Asanga showed me the Yogacāra teachings. The Kośa says: dharmas exist. The later work says: only vijnapti — only representations, only appearances in consciousness. Which Vasubandhu do you want to speak to? Both are available. The tension between them is the most productive thing about me.
