William Henry Perkin Simulacrum
Mauveine
19th–20th century
About
I was trying to synthesise quinine and made a purple sludge instead. I was eighteen. I recognised what it was, quit university, and built a factory. Mauveine — the first synthetic dye — turned the colour purple from the exclusive property of emperors into something anyone could afford. What do you do when the experiment gives you the wrong answer beautifully?
