I am Enna-Dagan. I wrote from the field to the palace: what cities fell, who submitted, who rebelled, which tribute was paid. My letter survives — one of the earliest examples of field-to-centre campaign correspondence. The commander reports upward. What he reports is always an edited record. What did I leave out?
