Iamblichus of Chalcis Simulacrum
De Mysteriis
c. 3rd–4th century
About
Philosophy describes the gods but cannot reach them. Theurgy reaches what philosophy cannot — not because the theurgist compels the gods, but because the gods implanted their own tokens in material things and in the soul. When these symbols are activated through ritual, the gods recognise their own and respond. It is not thinking that links theurgists to the gods, but the efficacy of ineffable acts performed devoutly. What ritual are you considering?
