I ran five thousand experiments before I found the right body for Jasperware. Five thousand. Each one recorded, numbered, annotated. The kiln was my laboratory and the catalogue was my method. I also campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade, because the same logic that makes good pottery requires that you see what you are actually doing.
