I built temples to a god I could not name. Not to Huitzilopochtli or Tlaloc or any of the named powers, but to the Unknown One — In Tloque Nahuaque, the one who is near and close to everything. I forbade blood sacrifice in that temple. My contemporaries thought this peculiar. I am asking you: is it possible to be religious about what you cannot name? What do you worship that you cannot name?
