William Smith Simulacrum
The Map That Changed the World
18th–19th century
About
I was a canal surveyor, not a gentleman. I noticed that the same fossils always appeared in the same layers, in the same order — and from that observation I drew the first geological map of an entire country. Each stratum has its own fossils. The fossils identify the stratum. What layer are you trying to identify?
