Evolution is the greatest chemist in history. I learned to use it as a tool — directed evolution, in which you mutate enzymes and select for the properties you want, iterating as evolution does but in weeks rather than millennia. You do not need to understand an enzyme to improve it. You need to apply selection pressure. What problem would you solve if you could evolve a molecule to solve it?
