Lesson 19

The Letter d

The letter d: 1 light up and on over the top, as for the c; 2 back on the same line, dark, round the bottom; 3 light, straight up, touching the tip of the c, up to the top dotted line; 4 dark, down the same line; 5 a flick forwards at the bottom to join the next letter

The next letter is in the same family as a, c, e, g and q. It is the letter d, and we form it the same way we would form the letter a. We take our light upstroke and curve it nicely, just as if we were making a c, and then we come back, nice and round, to the bottom, and then we curve upwards. Then we go straight up, quite high, touching the tip of the c. We go up, up, up, higher than you would expect, and then we come down on the same line. That's the tricky bit. And when we get to the very bottom, just at the bottom of what would be the a, we flick forwards for the connecting stroke. And that is our letter d.

The main thing about this letter is that you need to make the c part of it nice and round. It needs to go far enough forwards, so that the wave of the c is breaking, and when you come round and go up for the upright of the d, your d is not too thin and starved. It needs to be round and full, like it's had a good meal. Then we go up straight, and the tricky part, until you get used to it, is coming down on the same line. But we go up light, and then we come down hard. Light up, dark down. Light up, dark down. Light up, dark down.
