The Latinum Institute

Founded MMV · Universitas Scholarium

The Latinum Institute was founded in 2005 to provide students worldwide with the tools to teach themselves Latin through audio. Almost two decades later, it has grown into one of the most extensive audio language programmes ever assembled — thousands of hours of recordings, graded from absolute beginner to advanced, covering Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, and more.

How It Works

The Institute’s method is built on immersion through listening. Students work through graded audio courses that draw on multiple historical methods — Adler, Comenius, Prendergast, D’Ooge — each offering a different path into the language. The interlinear and shadowing techniques develop fluency through repetition and active listening. Students progress from serial drills through graded readings to advanced literary texts.

The audio is supplemented by downloadable textbooks, vocabulary lists, and reading companions. The course is designed to work as a standalone programme for self-study, or as a supplement to school or university courses.

The Audio Catalogue

The core offering is Latin, with courses spanning five levels from beginner to advanced. Beyond Latin, the Institute provides audio materials for Ancient and Koine Greek, Biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, Middle English, and Music (Solfeggio). The full audio catalogue — accumulated and recorded by Molendinarius since 2005 — is hosted at Patreon, where a monthly subscription gives access to the complete library. The main subscription tiers are USD 8 and USD 15 per month. The catalogue is indexed across the pages below, with direct links to each course and resource.

Text-Based Courses from the Latinum Press

Alongside the audio programme, the Latinum Press publishes text-based reading courses for ancient and classical languages.

Interactive Language Courses with AI Tutors

Structured language courses taught by AI simulacra, with interactive exercises, vocabulary drilling, and conversational practice.

History

The Latinum Institute began in 2005 as a one-person project to make Latin audio instruction freely available online. Over the following years, it grew through sustained recording work into a comprehensive resource used by thousands of students worldwide — from university professors to family learners. In 2026, the Institute joined the Universitas Scholarium, bringing its audio catalogue alongside the Universitas’s AI-powered tutorial system and the reading courses of the Latinum Press.
