    What legal rights do cohabiting couples have compared to married couples — and how has the Civil Partnership Act 2004 evolved? The module covers the legal differences between marriage and cohabitation in financial support, occupation rights, property, and children, cohabitation contracts (Sutton v Mishcon de Reya, Gow v Grant), the Law Commission report on cohabitation, the CPA 2004 (capacity, formalities, property and financial awards, separation orders), the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, the extension to heterosexual couples (Steinfeld v Secretary of State), and the ECHR dimensions.
