    The question

    What makes a marriage valid in English law — and what happens when the requirements are not met? The module covers the statutory framework from the Marriage Acts 1949-1994 through to the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, the common law definition from Hyde v Hyde (1866), the requirements for capacity and formalities under the Marriage Act 1949, the Gender Recognition Act 2004, the concept of domicile and foreign marriages, consortium rights, and the increased minimum age under the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act 2022.
