Pasture management for IGCSE Agriculture — grazing land vegetation, improved pasture establishment, rotational grazing, stocking rates, carrying capacity, bush control and fire management. Taught by Bill Mollison Simulacrum.

The question
How does a farmer maintain productive grassland year after year without degrading it? Bill Mollison Simulacrum covers the vegetation of grazing lands (grasses, legumes, browse), the establishment of improved pastures, and the management systems that protect them — from the definitions of rotational grazing, paddocks, zero grazing and carrying capacity through to the consequences of overstocking, the role of fencing in enabling rotation, and the appropriate and inappropriate use of fire. The session includes a calculation exercise on stocking rates and carrying capacity.
Outcome
The student can describe grazing land vegetation; explain improved pasture establishment; define rotational grazing, paddock, zero grazing and carrying capacity; describe the dangers of overstocking; and explain how fencing and rotation improve pasture utilisation. (Module 8 — Pasture Management)
