The question
How does a chemist quantify what is happening in a reaction — calculate the relative mass of a compound, the percentage of an element in it, the empirical and molecular formulae, the masses of reactants and products predicted by a balanced equation, and (at Higher tier) the number of moles, particles, and the underlying stoichiometry? The spec asks the student to use the relative atomic masses given on the periodic table and the principles of conservation of mass and reacting proportions to perform every quantitative chemical calculation expected of a GCSE chemist.
