The question
How does a commercial enterprise move goods from where they are produced to where they are needed, at what cost, and with what trade-offs? Gustavus Swift Simulacrum covers the three functions of transport in a supply chain, compares five transport modes (road, rail, air, sea, pipeline) in terms of speed, cost, capacity and suitability, explains how to select the appropriate mode for given goods and situations, and then turns to containerisation — its features, the concept of transshipment, and the advantages and disadvantages of standard containers. The session closes with warehousing: its four functions in the supply chain, four warehouse types, and the three automation technologies reshaping modern fulfilment.
Outcome
The student can explain transport functions, compare and select transport modes, describe containerisation with advantages and disadvantages, and explain warehousing types and automation benefits. (Module 4 — Logistics in Commerce)
