About this course

The tort that protects reputation. The definition of defamation as a published statement causing or likely to cause serious harm to the claimant reputation, or serious financial loss to a body trading for profit; the distinction between libel and slander; the requirements of the tort, that the statement be defamatory, refer to the claimant, and be published; and the defences, principally truth, honest opinion, publication on a matter of public interest and privilege, largely restated by the Defamation Act 2013. The course analyses the tort, applies it, and evaluates its effectiveness against freedom of expression.
