The defences that defeat or reduce a claim in tort. The distinction between complete defences, which defeat the action altogether, and partial defences, which reduce the damages; the complete defence of consent, volenti non fit injuria; the complete defence of illegality, ex turpi causa non oritur actio; and the partial defence of contributory negligence, which apportions responsibility and reduces the award. The course analyses the defences, including their application to special groups, applies them, and evaluates them.
