Lesson 3 Albanian (Shqip): A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

dhe (DHEH) - And

Introduction

The English word "and" joins things of the same kind: two words ("bread and cheese"), two phrases ("in the kitchen and in the garden"), two whole clauses ("I was in town and now I am at home"). Albanian does the same work with one small word, dhe. It is the third word of the vocabulary list, and it is the first conjunction of this course: it has no gender, no number, no case and no ending. It never changes its form. You learn it once, and it is right in every sentence.

The vocabulary list gives "and" as a conjunction, a coordinator. The Albanian word taught here is dhe, because it is the ordinary word for "and" in Standard Albanian, in speech and in print, in every register. Albanian has other words that overlap with it, and they are named below so that they are not confused with it.

The word sits between the things it joins, exactly as "and" does: bukë dhe djathë "bread and cheese", Ana dhe Besa "Ana and Besa". When more than two things are joined, dhe stands before the last one, as in English: bukë, djathë dhe qumësht "bread, cheese and milk". Between clauses it joins them in the same way, and a second clause does not need a second subject if the subject is the same: Ai ha bukë dhe pi çaj "He eats bread and drinks tea".

Its neighbours, which are easily confused with it, are:

- edhe (/ɛðɛ/, "also, even, too") is a longer word that looks like dhe with a letter in front. It often means "also" or "too": Edhe unë pi çaj "I drink tea too". Wiktionary lists it as a conjunction with the senses "and" and "also, even". - e (/ɛ/, "and") is a very short word that is also "and" in some contexts. It is common in the Gheg dialect and in older texts, and it is the same little word as the linking article e ("of") and the pronoun e ("her, him, it"). Lesson 2 has kisha e xhamia "the church and the mosque" in Section F, and this lesson explains it in Section E. - por (/pɔɾ/, "but") is the opposite of dhe: it contrasts where dhe adds. Djali është i vogël, por vajza është e madhe "The boy is small, but the girl is big" (Lesson 2). - ose (/ɔsɛ/, "or") offers a choice where dhe adds: çaj ose qumësht "tea or milk". - dhe (/ðɛ/, "earth, soil") is also a noun, and it is a different word with the same spelling. It is the last syllable of atdhe "homeland". You will meet it rarely, and the sentence always shows which word is meant.

The first thing to learn is that dhe does not change. It is the same for masculine and feminine, singular and plural, subject and object. The second thing is that the things it joins do change, and the sentence has to agree with all of them together: two singular subjects joined by dhe take a plural verb, as in English, Ana dhe Besa janë "Ana and Besa are". The third thing is that Albanian usually repeats the small words that belong to each item: the linking article before each adjective (i vogël dhe i vjetër "small and old") and the word for "a" before each noun (një vëlla dhe një motër "a brother and a sister").

Orthographic points: dh is one letter of the Albanian alphabet, and it stands for one sound, the "th" of English "the". It is not a d followed by an h. The word is written with no capital in the middle of a sentence and with a capital when it begins one: Dhe ti? "And you?".

FAQ: What does "and" mean in Albanian?

Q: What is "and" in Albanian? A: It is dhe: Ana dhe Besa "Ana and Besa", bukë dhe djathë "bread and cheese". The word never changes its form.

Q: How do I say "and you?" A: Dhe ti? It is the usual way to return a question: Jam mirë, dhe ti? "I am well, and you?".

Q: What is the difference between dhe and edhe? A: Dhe joins things: bukë dhe djathë. Edhe is longer and often means "also, too, even": Edhe unë pi çaj "I drink tea too".

Q: Does a list need a comma before dhe? A: The sources differ. This course writes none: bukë, djathë dhe qumësht.

Key Takeaways

- Dhe is "and". It joins words, phrases and clauses, and it never changes its form. - With more than two items, dhe comes before the last one: bukë, djathë dhe qumësht. - Two subjects joined by dhe take a plural verb: Ana dhe Besa janë, Ti dhe unë shkojmë. - The link before an adjective and një before a noun are usually repeated after dhe: i vogël dhe i vjetër, një vëlla dhe një motër. - Edhe means "also, even", e is a short "and" of the Gheg dialect and of older texts, por is "but" and ose is "or".

Pronunciation Guide

IPA in this lesson is a simple transcription of each word on its own, and stress is not marked, as in Lessons 1 and 2. Dhe is /ðɛ/, a single short syllable.

Sounds in this lesson that English lacks or treats differently:

- dh = /ð/, the "th" of English "the" and "this": dhe /ðɛ/, lodhur /lɔðuɾ/. It is one sound and one letter, and it is never read as d + h. - th = /θ/, the "th" of English "thin": djathë /djaθə/. Do not mix it up with dh: the two are different letters and different sounds. - e = /ɛ/ as in "bed": dhe /ðɛ/, ne /nɛ/, dje /djɛ/. It is a full vowel, not the weak ë. - ë = /ə/, a weak vowel like the first sound of English "about": bukë /bukə/, vëlla /vəɫa/, motër /mɔtəɾ/. - ç = /tʃ/ ("ch"): çaj /tʃaj/. q = /c/, a palatal sound like a soft "ty": qumësht /cuməʃt/, qytet /cytɛt/. - x = /dz/: lexojmë /lɛdzɔjmə/. It is not the English "ks". The letter xh is a different sound, /dʒ/. - sh = /ʃ/ ("sh"): shkollë /ʃkɔɫə/, kopsht /kɔpʃt/. zh = /ʒ/, as the "s" of English "measure": kuzhinë /kuʒinə/. - j = /j/, the "y" of "yes": çaj /tʃaj/, vajza /vajza/, janë /janə/. - nj = /ɲ/ ("ni" in "onion"): një /ɲə/. ll = /ɫ/, a dark "l": vëlla /vəɫa/.

Section A: Interlinear Construed Text

Examples 3.1–3.15 are pedagogical constructions built from verified vocabulary and patterns (Acceptabile). They are not quotations. As in Lesson 2, a verb form is glossed together with its subject when English needs one: kam is I-have, ke is you-have, pi is I-drink and ha is I-eat in the first person, and lexojmë is we-read, shkojmë is we-go, pinë is they-drink. A form that has no pronoun in English is glossed with the plain verb: është is is, janë is are. The article ending is shown as -the on the English word: libri is book-the. Line b uses the abbreviations of Lessons 1 and 2.

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for dhe in Albanian:

1. Dhe never changes. It has no gender, number or case. The same word joins nouns (3.1–3.4), pronouns (3.5), adjectives (3.9, 3.14), verbs (3.6) and whole clauses (3.11, 3.12, 3.13).

2. Where it stands. Dhe stands between the two things it joins. With three or more, dhe stands before the last: bukë, djathë dhe qumësht (Genre Section, 3.19). This course writes no comma before it, and the printed sources differ on this point.

3. Two subjects, a plural verb. Two subjects joined by dhe take the plural of the verb: Ana dhe Besa janë (3.7), Djali dhe vajza janë (3.12). When one of the subjects is "I", the verb is in the first person plural: Ti dhe unë shkojmë "You and I go" (Genre Section, 3.29).

4. A second clause with the same subject. The subject is not repeated: Ai ha bukë dhe pi çaj (3.6), where ai serves both verbs. In Dje isha në qytet dhe sot jam në shtëpi (3.11) there is no pronoun at all, because the verb forms isha and jam both show unë. A different subject must be named: Djali dhe vajza janë në shkollë, por nëna është në shtëpi (3.12).

5. Small words are repeated. After dhe the linking article is usually repeated before a second adjective: i vogël dhe i vjetër (3.9), i lodhur dhe i uritur (3.14). The indefinite një is repeated before a second noun: një libër dhe një gazetë (3.8), një vëlla dhe një motër (3.10). 6. Nouns joined by dhe keep their own form. Definite nouns stay definite: djali dhe vajza (3.3). After me "with", both nouns take the object form: me nënën dhe motrën (3.15). After në, the nouns are usually indefinite, as in Lesson 1: në qytet, në shtëpi (3.11).

7. And at the start. Dhe may begin a sentence, to carry on or to return a question: Dhe ti? (3.5). This is the normal way to say "And you?".

8. Dhe and its neighbours.

- edhe "also, even": Edhe unë pi çaj "I drink tea too" (Genre Section, 3.21). - e "and": the short form of the Gheg dialect and of older texts (Section E). Do not confuse it with the linking article e ("of") or the clitic e ("her, him, it"). - por "but": Djali dhe vajza janë në shkollë, por nëna është në shtëpi (3.12). - ose "or": çaj ose qumësht "tea or milk".

9. The noun dhe. The noun dhe "earth, soil" is another word with the same spelling. It is masculine. It is found in atdhe "homeland", and it is not related to the conjunction.

Common Mistakes

- A singular verb with two subjects. Wrong: Ana dhe Besa është të lumtura. Right: Ana dhe Besa janë të lumtura. - A third person verb after "you and I". Wrong: Ti dhe unë janë në shkollë. Right: Ti dhe unë jemi në shkollë. - Reading dh as d + h. The word is /ðɛ/, with the "th" of English "the". It is not "deh". - Dropping the link after dhe. Weak: Libri është i vogël dhe vjetër. Better: Libri është i vogël dhe i vjetër. - Dropping një after dhe. Weak: Kam një vëlla dhe motër. Better: Kam një vëlla dhe një motër. - Putting dhe before the first item. Wrong: dhe bukë, djathë. Right: bukë dhe djathë. - Mixing up dh and th. Dhe "and" has /ð/. Djathë "cheese" has /θ/. They are different sounds. - Using dhe for "but" or "or". For "but" use por, and for "or" use ose.

✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾

Section E: Cultural Context

Frequency and register. Dhe is the third word on the frequency list this course follows, and it belongs to every register, spoken and written. The Constitution of Kosovo uses it as freely as a conversation does.

And you? A conversation in Albanian is carried along by dhe. A common answer to Si je? "How are you?" is Jam mirë, faleminderit, dhe ti? "I am well, thank you, and you?". The Genre Section uses dhe in a family scene at breakfast.

The Gheg "e". In the Gheg dialect, and in the older writing based on it, the ordinary word for "and" is the short e. The Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini, collected by Shtjefën Gjeçovi (1933), is in Gheg, and the University of Texas Linguistics Research Center, which prints a passage from it, glosses "and" there as e throughout. The same use is in Lesson 2, Section F, where Pashko Vasa writes kisha e xhamia "the church and the mosque". The standard language, which is based on Tosk, writes dhe.

Two states, one word. The Albanian language is the official language of Albania and an official language of Kosovo, and the Constitution of Kosovo, in force from 15 June 2008, names the official languages with dhe. Section F gives the sentence.

Dhe, "earth". The noun dhe "earth, soil" is the last part of atdhe "homeland". It is a different word from the conjunction, even though the two are spelled alike.

Section F: Literary Citation

Kushtetuta e Republikës së Kosovës (Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo), in force from 15 June 2008, Chapter I, Article 5 [Languages], paragraph 1.

The text is given as printed in the Albanian copy on Wikisource (Kushtetuta e Kosovës, Kapitulli I) and checked against the lesson text of the University of Texas Linguistics Research Center's Albanian Online, which prints Articles 5 to 7. The capitals of Gjuha Shqipe and Gjuha Serbe are those of the printed text, and the translation is ours. This is a legal text and not a literary one, and it is chosen because it is authentic, short, and an official statement in which dhe joins two things of the same kind.

"The official languages in the Republic of Kosovo are the Albanian language and the Serbian language."

F-C: Original Only

Gjuhë zyrtare në Republikën e Kosovës janë Gjuha Shqipe dhe Gjuha Serbe.

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

- dhe: the conjunction joins two noun phrases of the same pattern, Gjuha Shqipe and Gjuha Serbe, each with the definite noun and its adjective. The verb janë is plural because it has both of them for its subject, as Section D, rule 3 says. - Gjuhë zyrtare ... janë: the subject complement stands first, "official languages", and the verb follows it, with the two named languages after it. Word order in Albanian is freer than in English, and the order here puts the weight on what the languages are. - në Republikën e Kosovës: në takes the object form of republika, which is Republikën. The link e joins it to the genitive Kosovës and agrees with the feminine noun: "in the Republic of Kosovo". - Gjuha Shqipe, Gjuha Serbe: in the names of the languages the adjective follows the noun, and in the printed text both words are capitalised. - A second example in the same article. Paragraph 2 of Article 5 reads, in the text consulted, Gjuha Turke, Boshnjake dhe ajo Rome kanë statusin e gjuhëve zyrtare në nivel komune... "The Turkish, Bosnian and Romani languages have the status of official languages at the municipal level...". It joins three items with a comma and one dhe before the last, and has no comma before dhe. The copy of Article 1 in the same chapter, on the other hand, prints a comma before dhe (unik, dhe i pandashëm), which is why this course says that the sources differ.

The sentence names two languages and joins them with a single small word.

Part D: Grammar Notes for the Genre Section

- Two subjects, a plural verb. Ana dhe Dritan janë (3.16), Ana dhe Dritan pinë (3.22), Nëna dhe babai janë (3.23), Libri dhe gazeta janë (3.25, 3.26). With "you and I" the verb is first person plural: shkojmë (3.29). With two third persons it is third person plural: shkojnë (3.30). - A list. Bukë, djathë dhe qumësht (3.19) has commas between the first items and dhe before the last. - One subject, two verbs. Dritan është ... dhe është student (3.17), pi çaj dhe ha bukë (3.20, 3.21) and shkojnë ... dhe janë të lumtur (3.30): the subject is named once, and dhe joins the verbs. - Profession and article. Student (3.17) is a profession, so it has no article and no një, as in Lesson 2. - Dhe and edhe in one sentence. Edhe unë pi çaj dhe ha djathë (3.21): edhe "also" belongs to unë, and dhe joins the two verbs. - The verbs "eat" and "drink". Ha "I eat" and pi "I drink" are the same in the first, second and third person singular, so the pronoun shows who: Ai ha (3.6), Unë ha (3.20). The plural forms are hamë, hani, hanë and pimë, pini, pinë. - The object forms. Çajin and bukën (3.28) are the definite object forms after për "for", the same form as after në and me in Lessons 1 and 2. After a verb of eating or drinking the indefinite noun has no article: ha bukë, pi çaj. - The definite form. Gazeta (3.25, 3.26) is the definite form of gazetë (3.8): "the newspaper", as libri is the definite form of libër. - Mirë dhe tani. Mirë, dhe tani jemi gati (3.27) shows dhe beginning a new clause after a short answer, as in 3.5. - Quotation. Direct speech is introduced by a colon and put in quotation marks (3.18–3.21, 3.24–3.29), as in Lesson 2.
