Lesson 51 Arabic (العربية): A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

@ᵀᴱᴹᴾᵁˢ.ᴾᴿᴬᴱˢᴱᴺˢ - الآن (al-ān) - Now / At Present

Introduction

What does “now” mean in Arabic?

The English temporal adverb “now” is expressed in Arabic as الآن (al-ān), which literally means “the time” or “the moment.” This word is the most common and neutral way to indicate the present moment in Modern Standard Arabic, functioning across all registers from everyday conversation to formal writing.

الآن is unique among Arabic temporal adverbs because it is مبني (mabnī) - indeclinable - meaning its ending never changes regardless of its grammatical position in a sentence. It always ends with fatḥa (الآنَ), making it one of only two temporal adverbs with this special characteristic (the other being أمس “yesterday”). This grammatical peculiarity reflects its fundamental role as a temporal anchor point in Arabic discourse.

When الآن appears in a sentence, it indicates that an action, state, or event is occurring at the immediate present moment. It commonly appears with present tense verbs to create the sense of “right now” or “at this very moment,” similar to the English present continuous. Understanding الآن is essential for discussing current events, describing ongoing actions, and situating discourse in present time.

Throughout these 15 examples and the subsequent genre section, we’ll explore how الآن functions in various sentence positions, with different verb tenses, in questions and negations, and in idiomatic expressions that mark temporal transitions.

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for الآن (al-ān)

Core Function:

الآن (al-ān) functions as a temporal adverb (ظرف الزمان - ẓarf az-zamān) that indicates the present moment or current time. It is the most common and neutral way to express “now” in Modern Standard Arabic.

Etymology and Composition:

الآن is composed of: -

ال (al-) - the definite article “the” -

آن (ān) - “time, moment”

Literally: “the time” or “the moment” → “now”

Special Grammatical Status - مبني (Indeclinable):

الآن has a unique grammatical characteristic: it is مبني (mabnī), meaning it is indeclinable and does not change its ending based on grammatical case. This makes it exceptional among Arabic adverbs.

Key points: -

Always ends with fatḥa: الآنَ -

Does not take tanween (nunation) -

Remains unchanged whether it’s the subject, object, or in a prepositional phrase -

One of only two temporal adverbs that are مبني (the other is أمس “yesterday”)

Why is الآن indeclinable?

Classical Arabic grammarians debated this extensively. The main reasons cited: -

It always appears with the definite article ال, which is unusual for adverbs -

It has no indefinite form (no *آن without ال) -

Its unique combination of definite article + fixed meaning creates the exception

Sentence Positions:

الآن is flexible and can appear in three main positions: -

Initial Position (Emphatic): -

الآن نحن مستعدون (al-ān naḥnu mustaʿiddūn) - “NOW we are ready” -

Places emphasis on the temporal shift to the present moment -

Common in formal writing and speeches -

Medial Position (Neutral): -

نحن الآن مستعدون (naḥnu al-ān mustaʿiddūn) - “We are NOW ready” -

Most common position in standard prose -

Neutral statement without special emphasis -

Final Position (Common in Speech): -

نحن مستعدون الآن (naḥnu mustaʿiddūn al-ān) - “We are ready NOW” -

Frequent in conversation -

Can emphasize the completion or current state

Usage with Verb Tenses: -

With Present Tense (Most Common): -

هو يدرس الآن (huwa yadrusu al-ān) - “He is studying now” -

Creates present continuous sense -

Indicates action happening at this very moment -

With Past Tense: -

الآن فهمت (al-ān fahimtu) - “Now I understood” -

Indicates realization or change that just occurred -

Marks the present moment as the time of understanding -

With Future Tense: -

من الآن سأدرس (min al-ān sa-adrusu) - “From now I will study” -

Usually with من الآن (from now on) -

Indicates future action starting from the present moment -

With Nominal Sentences: -

الوقت الآن مناسب (al-waqt al-ān munāsib) - “The time now is suitable” -

Functions as temporal modifier of the entire statement

Common Idiomatic Phrases: -

من الآن (min al-ān) - “from now on” -

من الآن فصاعداً (min al-ān fa-ṣāʿidan) - “from now onwards” -

Indicates future period beginning from present -

حتى الآن (ḥattā al-ān) - “until now, so far” -

لم أره حتى الآن (lam arahu ḥattā al-ān) - “I haven’t seen him until now” -

Indicates time span up to the present -

الآن فقط (al-ān faqaṭ) - “just now, only now” -

الآن فقط عرفت (al-ān faqaṭ ʿariftu) - “Only now did I know” -

Emphasizes recentness or lateness of realization -

منذ... الآن (mundhu... al-ān) - “for... now” -

منذ ساعة الآن (mundhu sāʿa al-ān) - “for an hour now” -

Indicates duration up to present moment

Negation with الآن:

الآن works naturally with negated verbs: -

لا أعمل الآن (lā aʿmalu al-ān) - “I am not working now” -

لم أكن أعرف هذا حتى الآن (lam akun aʿrifu hādhā ḥattā al-ān) - “I didn’t know this until now”

Questions with الآن:

Commonly used in questions about current state or action: -

ماذا تفعل الآن؟ (mādhā tafʿalu al-ān?) - “What are you doing now?” -

هل أنت مستعد الآن؟ (hal anta mustaʿidd al-ān?) - “Are you ready now?” -

أين هو الآن؟ (ayna huwa al-ān?) - “Where is he now?”

Alternatives to الآن:

While الآن is the standard, other expressions exist: -

حالاً (ḥālan) - “presently, right now” -

More emphatic than الآن -

Suggests greater immediacy -

Less common in formal writing -

في الوقت الحالي (fī al-waqt al-ḥālī) - “at the present time” -

More formal/bureaucratic -

Common in official documents and news -

الساعة (as-sāʿa) - “now” (dialectal) -

Used in Egyptian and some other dialects -

Not standard MSA

Common Mistakes

-

Incorrect: Trying to make الآن agree in case -

❌ الآنِ (with kasra) or الآنُ (with damma) -

✓ الآنَ (always with fatha) -

الآن is مبني and never changes its ending -

Incorrect: Using الآن without the definite article -

❌ آن alone (doesn’t exist in MSA) -

✓ الآن -

Always includes ال -

Incorrect: Placing الآن illogically with completed past actions -

❌ ذهب إلى المدرسة الآن (He went to school now) - if referring to distant past -

✓ ذهب إلى المدرسة الآن - only if the action just happened -

✓ الآن فهمت أنه ذهب إلى المدرسة (Now I understood that he went to school) -

Incorrect: Confusing الآن with الأن (missing مد) -

❌ الأن (short alif) -

✓ الآن (with مد - آ) -

The آ is essential to the word -

Incorrect: Overusing الآن when other temporal markers are more natural -

Awkward: الآن أنا أذهب الآن إلى المدرسة الآن -

Better: أذهب الآن إلى المدرسة (I am going to school now) -

Use الآن once per clause

Section E: Cultural Context

Usage in Modern Standard Arabic

الآن is one of the most frequently used temporal adverbs in Arabic across all registers and contexts. It appears constantly in: -

Everyday conversation: Discussing current activities and immediate plans -

News media: Marking current events and live reporting -

Academic discourse: Indicating present state of research or current theories -

Literature: Creating temporal anchors and marking transitions -

Religious discourse: Discussing present spiritual states and current obligations

Frequency and Universality:

الآن is universally understood across all Arabic-speaking regions and is identical in both Modern Standard Arabic and most dialects (though pronunciation may vary slightly). Its frequency in spoken and written Arabic is comparable to “now” in English - it’s one of the core temporal markers that every speaker uses multiple times daily.

Formal vs. Colloquial Usage:

الآن maintains remarkable consistency across registers: -

Formal MSA: الآن نناقش القضية (al-ān nunāqishu al-qaḍiyya) - “Now we discuss the issue” -

Educated speech: Same pronunciation and usage -

Colloquial: May be pronounced with slight variations: -

Egyptian: دلوقتي (dilwaʾtī) or الساعة (is-sāʿa) more common, but الآن understood -

Levantine: هلأ (hallaʾ) or الآن (il-ān) -

Gulf: الحين (al-ḥīn) or الآن -

Maghrebi: دابا (daba) or الآن (l-ān)

Despite dialectal variations, الآن remains the standard across all regions in formal contexts.

Discourse Functions:

الآن serves multiple discourse functions beyond simple time marking: -

Temporal Transition: -

Marks shift from past/background to present focus -

Example: كان الوضع صعباً، ولكن الآن تحسّن (The situation was difficult, but now it has improved) -

Logical Transition: -

Introduces conclusion or new phase of argument -

Example: الآن نفهم السبب (Now we understand the reason) -

Emphasis: -

Draws attention to current relevance -

Example: الآن أصبح واضحاً (Now it has become clear) -

Urgency: -

Creates sense of immediacy -

Example: يجب أن نتحرك الآن (We must move now)

In News and Media:

الآن is ubiquitous in news reporting: -

الآن في القاهرة (al-ān fī al-qāhira) - “Now in Cairo” (live report) -

نقرأ الآن (naqraʾu al-ān) - “We read now” (introducing breaking news) -

وصل الآن (waṣala al-ān) - “Just arrived/broke” (breaking news)

News broadcasts often use الآن to signal live coverage or current updates, distinguishing present information from background or archived material.

Philosophical and Reflective Usage:

In philosophical and literary Arabic, الآن carries deeper implications about the nature of the present moment: -

الآن فقط أدركت (al-ān faqaṭ adraktu) - “Only now did I realize” -

Suggests delayed understanding or epiphany -

Common in personal narrative and reflection -

اللحظة الآن (al-laḥẓa al-ān) - “The moment now” -

Philosophical focus on present awareness -

Used in mindfulness and spiritual discourse

Temporal Deixis:

الآن is a deictic term, meaning its reference point shifts with the speaker: -

What is “now” for the speaker is their present moment -

In written texts, الآن can refer to the time of writing or time of reading (context dependent) -

In historical writing: الآن نعرف أن... (Now we know that...) refers to present knowledge

Idiomatic Expressions:

Several fixed expressions use الآن: -

من الآن فصاعداً (min al-ān fa-ṣāʿidan) - “from now on” -

Marks commitment to future change -

Common in resolutions and promises -

حتى الآن (ḥattā al-ān) - “until now, so far” -

Indicates incomplete or ongoing situation -

Often suggests potential for change -

الآن... الآن (al-ān... al-ān) - “now... now” -

Creates rhythm in listing simultaneous events -

Literary device for parallel actions

Register Considerations:

While الآن is appropriate for all contexts, some situations call for alternatives: -

Very formal/bureaucratic: في الوقت الحالي (at the present time) -

Emphatic/immediate: حالاً (right now, presently) -

Dialectal/informal: Various regional forms

However, الآن itself is never inappropriate and serves as the safe, neutral choice across all situations.

Section F: Literary Citation

The following passage is from Taha Hussein (طه حسين), one of the most influential Egyptian writers and intellectuals of the 20th century. This excerpt from his autobiography الأيام (Al-Ayyam - “The Days”) demonstrates how الآن functions in reflective narrative prose to mark moments of realization and temporal contrast.

F-B: Natural Text with Translation

الآن يذكر تلك الأيام البعيدة وكأنها حاضرة. كان الطفل لا يفهم ما يجري حوله، ولكن الآن بعد مرور السنين أصبح كل شيء واضحاً

al-ān yadhkuru tilka al-ayyām al-baʿīda wa-ka-annahā ḥāḍira. kāna aṭ-ṭifl lā yafhamu mā yajrī ḥawlahu, wa-lākin al-ān baʿda murūr as-sinīn aṣbaḥa kull shayʾ wāḍiḥan

“Now he remembers those distant days as if they were present. The child did not understand what was happening around him, but now, after the passing of years, everything has become clear.”

F-C: Original Script Only

الآن يذكر تلك الأيام البعيدة وكأنها حاضرة. كان الطفل لا يفهم ما يجري حوله، ولكن الآن بعد مرور السنين أصبح كل شيء واضحاً

al-ān yadhkuru tilka al-ayyām al-baʿīda wa-ka-annahā ḥāḍira. kāna aṭ-ṭifl lā yafhamu mā yajrī ḥawlahu, wa-lākin al-ān baʿda murūr as-sinīn aṣbaḥa kull shayʾ wāḍiḥan

F-D: Grammar and Vocabulary Explanation

Vocabulary: -

يذكر (yadhkuru) - “he remembers” (present tense) -

تلك (tilka) - “those” (demonstrative, feminine plural, distant) -

الأيام (al-ayyām) - “the days” (plural of يوم yawm) -

البعيدة (al-baʿīda) - “distant, far” (adjective) -

وكأنها (wa-ka-annahā) - “and as if they” (وكأن = as if + هَا pronoun) -

حاضرة (ḥāḍira) - “present” (adjective, feminine) -

كان (kāna) - “was” (past tense of “to be”) -

الطفل (aṭ-ṭifl) - “the child” -

يفهم (yafhamu) - “he understands” (present tense) -

ما يجري (mā yajrī) - “what happens/flows” (relative clause) -

حوله (ḥawlahu) - “around him” (حول + pronoun) -

بعد مرور السنين (baʿda murūr as-sinīn) - “after the passing of years” -

أصبح (aṣbaḥa) - “became” (verb of transformation) -

واضحاً (wāḍiḥan) - “clear” (adjective, accusative)

Grammatical Analysis:

This passage demonstrates two distinct uses of الآن: -

First الآن - Present perspective of narrator: -

الآن يذكر (Now he remembers) -

Marks the present moment of narration -

Contrasts with تلك الأيام البعيدة (those distant days) -

Creates temporal framework: distant past viewed from present -

Second الآن - Moment of understanding: -

ولكن الآن بعد مرور السنين (But now after the passing of years) -

Marks temporal transition from past confusion to present clarity -

The الآن here represents accumulated time (بعد مرور السنين) -

Introduces the change: أصبح كل شيء واضحاً (everything became clear)

Rhetorical Structure:

The passage uses الآن to create a temporal contrast: -

Past: كان الطفل لا يفهم (The child did not understand) -

Present: الآن... أصبح كل شيء واضحاً (Now... everything became clear)

The repetition of الآن (once at the beginning, once with ولكن) creates a frame that emphasizes the transformation from ignorance to understanding over time.

Verb of Transformation:

أصبح (aṣbaḥa) “became” is one of the كان sisters (أخوات كان) that shows change of state. Combined with الآن, it emphasizes that the clarity is a result of temporal distance and maturation.

F-E: Literary and Contextual Commentary

Taha Hussein’s Al-Ayyam (1929) is a pioneering Arabic autobiography that revolutionized modern Arabic prose. Written in the third person about himself as “the child,” Hussein reflects on his childhood blindness and education in rural Egypt.

The double use of الآن in this passage demonstrates a sophisticated literary technique: -

Narrative الآن - The mature narrator in the present moment -

Reflective الآن - The point of realization and understanding

This creates a layered temporality common in memoir: the past events, the moment of understanding them, and the present moment of writing about both. الآن serves as the linguistic marker for each temporal layer.

Hussein’s style influenced generations of Arabic writers. His use of simple, clear Arabic (rather than ornate classical style) with precise temporal markers like الآن helped establish modern Arabic prose conventions. The contrast between childhood confusion (لا يفهم) and adult clarity (واضحاً) mediated by الآن exemplifies his philosophical approach to autobiography as a process of understanding one’s own past.

The phrase بعد مرور السنين (after the passing of years) combined with الآن shows how temporal adverbs can work together to create complex time relationships - الآن marks the present moment that contains the accumulated understanding of those passed years.
