← English for Malayalam Speakers
the — നിശ്ചിത ആർട്ടിക്കിൾ (definite article).
the എപ്പോൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു:
- വസ്തുവിനെക്കുറിച്ച് മുമ്പ് പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്: I have a cat. The cat is black. = എനിക്ക് ഒരു പൂച്ചയുണ്ട്. പൂച്ച കറുത്തതാണ്. (രണ്ടാമത്തെ തവണ അത് "നമുക്കറിയാവുന്ന ആ" പൂച്ചയാണ്.) - ആ വസ്തു ഒന്നേയുള്ളൂ: the sun (സൂര്യൻ), the sky (ആകാശം), the capital of Kerala (കേരളത്തിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനം). - സന്ദർഭത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യക്തമാണ്: Close the door = വാതിൽ അടയ്ക്കൂ (ഈ മുറിയിൽ തുറന്നുകിടക്കുന്ന വാതിൽ). - വാക്യത്തിൽ തുടർന്നു വരുന്ന ഭാഗം വസ്തുവിനെ വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു: the man who lives next door = അടുത്ത വീട്ടിൽ താമസിക്കുന്ന ആൾ. - "ഏറ്റവും" എന്ന അർത്ഥമുള്ള രൂപത്തിനും (superlative) ക്രമസൂചക സംഖ്യയ്ക്കും (ordinal number) മുമ്പ്: the longest river (ഏറ്റവും നീളമുള്ള നദി), the third floor (മൂന്നാം നില).
മൂന്നാമതായി, ആ, ഈ എന്നീ ചൂണ്ടുപദങ്ങൾ (demonstratives): "ആ സിനിമ വളരെ നീണ്ടതായിരുന്നു" = The film was very long.
the-ന് ഒരു ജോടിയുണ്ട്: അനിശ്ചിത ആർട്ടിക്കിൾ a / an (a cat, an apple).
(Key Takeaways):
- the = "നമുക്കറിയാവുന്ന ആ" വസ്തു; മലയാള പരിഭാഷയിൽ ആർട്ടിക്കിൾ അപ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുന്നു - ആദ്യത്തെ തവണ: a cat; രണ്ടാമത്തെ തവണ: the cat - ഒന്നേയുള്ളൂ എന്ന വസ്തു: the sun, the moon, the world - സന്ദർഭം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു: Close the door, Pass the salt - superlative, ക്രമസൂചക സംഖ്യ: the best, the longest, the first, the third - നദികൾ, കടലുകൾ, പർവതനിരകൾ: the Periyar, the Arabian Sea, the Western Ghats - the വേണ്ടാത്തിടം: ആളുകളുടെ പേരുകൾ, മിക്ക രാജ്യങ്ങളും നഗരങ്ങളും (India, Kerala, Kochi), ഭാഷകൾ (Malayalam, English) - മലയാളത്തിലെ "ആ" (ആ സിനിമ) പലപ്പോഴും the-നോട് അടുത്തുവരുന്നു; പ്രതിഗ്രാഹിക വിഭക്തിയും (കുട്ടികളെ) നിശ്ചിതത്വം കാണിക്കുന്നു - the more …, the more … = എത്ര കൂടുതൽ …-ഓ, അത്ര കൂടുതൽ … - ഉച്ചാരണം: വ്യഞ്ജനശബ്ദത്തിനു മുമ്പ് /ðə/, സ്വരശബ്ദത്തിനു മുമ്പ് /ði/
The English definite article the has no Malayalam equivalent, since Malayalam has no articles. This lesson shows Malayalam speakers when English requires the (a noun already mentioned, a unique thing, a thing clear from the situation, a superlative, a river or sea) and when it forbids it (personal names, most countries, states and cities, languages), and it links the article to the Malayalam demonstrative ആ and to the accusative ending -എ, which marks a specific object much as the does.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair …"

(മലയാള പരിഭാഷ ഈ പാഠത്തിനു വേണ്ടി പദാനുപദമായി തയ്യാറാക്കിയതാണ്; പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ഒരു പരിഭാഷയിൽ നിന്ന് എടുത്തതല്ല.)
1859-ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ചാൾസ് ഡിക്കൻസിന്റെ A Tale of Two Cities വാക്യത്തിന്റെ താളം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത് ഒരേ ഘടനയുടെ ആവർത്തനമാണ്: it was the … of …. ഈ ഭാഗത്ത് the പത്തു തവണ വരുന്നു; ഓരോ തവണയും ഒരു പ്രത്യേക കാലത്തെ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ wisdom, foolishness, hope, despair എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് the ഇല്ല: അവ പൊതുവായ ആശയങ്ങളാണ്.
- the best of times, the worst of times: superlative, അതിനാൽ the വേണം (ഭാഗം D, നിയമം 5). മലയാളത്തിൽ "ഏറ്റവും നല്ല", "ഏറ്റവും മോശം". times ഇവിടെ the ഇല്ലാതെ: "of times" = എല്ലാ കാലങ്ങളിലും വെച്ച്. - the age of wisdom: the + നാമം + of + നാമം. "of wisdom" ആ യുഗത്തെ ഏതാണെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു, അതുകൊണ്ട് age-ന് the (ഭാഗം D, നിയമം 2). മലയാളത്തിൽ ഇത് സംബന്ധിക വിഭക്തി (-ന്റെ / -ഉടെ) ആയി മാറുന്നു, ക്രമവും തിരിയുന്നു: the age of wisdom = ജ്ഞാനത്തിന്റെ യുഗം. - wisdom, foolishness, belief, hope, despair the - it was: it = അത്, was = ആയിരുന്നു. ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ was വാക്യത്തിന്റെ നടുവിൽ, കർത്താവിനു തൊട്ടുപിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു; മലയാളത്തിൽ "ആയിരുന്നു" വാക്യത്തിന്റെ അവസാനം.
