A construed Latin story told by the pastoral poet of Nero's reign. Faunus's beech, which carries a carved oracle of the golden age, is felled for the emperor's wooden amphitheatre. Its owner, too poor to be seated near Caesar, sees the god only from far away, and above his head he half-reads his own tree's verses on a beam.
