Lesson 55 Modern Hebrew (עברית): A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

בחזרה (be-khazara) - Back

Introduction

What does "back" mean in Hebrew?

English "back" is one short word with several jobs. It means returning ("come back," "give it back"), direction ("step back," "look back"), position ("at the back," "from behind") and a part of the body ("my back hurts"). Hebrew shares these out among different words. The one for the commonest sense, going or sending something back to where it came from, is the adverb בחזרה (be-khazara). It never changes: no gender, no number, no endings. אני רוצה את הספר שלי בחזרה (ani rotse et ha-sefer sheli be-khazara) is "I want my book back."

בחזרה is built from the prefix ב־ ("in") and the noun חזרה (khazara), "a return." The noun comes from the root ח־ז־ר (kh-z-r), "turn back, return," which also gives the verbs לחזור (lakhzor), "to return, to come back, to repeat," and להחזיר (lehakhzir), "to give back." The same noun means "repetition," "rehearsal" and "revision." So בחזרה is literally "in a return."

The first thing a learner must see is that Hebrew often does not need the adverb at all, because the verb already says "back":

- לחזור (lakhzor) — "to come back, to go back": חזרתי (khazarti), "I came back"; אחזור (ekhzor), "I'll be back" - להחזיר (lehakhzir) — "to give back, to return something": החזרתי את הספר (hekhzarti et ha-sefer), "I gave the book back"

בחזרה is for the verbs that do not carry "back" in themselves: ללכת בחזרה (lalekhet be-khazara), "to walk back"; לשים בחזרה (lasim be-khazara), "to put back"; לשלוח בחזרה (lishlo'akh be-khazara), "to send back"; לקבל בחזרה (lekabel be-khazara), "to get back." It also stands without a verb, as in בחזרה לעבודה (be-khazara la-avoda), "back to work," and בדרך בחזרה (ba-derekh be-khazara), "on the way back."

The other senses of English "back" have their own words:

- אחורה (akhora) — "backward, back" as a direction: צעד אחורה (tse'ad akhora), "step back" - מאחור (me'akhor) — "at the back, from behind": הוא יושב מאחור (hu yoshev me'akhor), "he sits at the back" - מאחורי (me'akhorei) — "behind" (a preposition): מאחורי הדלפק (me'akhorei ha-delpak), "behind the counter" - גב (gav) — "the back," the part of the body: כאב גב (ke'ev gav), "backache"

אחורה is אחור ("rear, back") with the old ending ־ה of direction, the same ending as in הביתה ("homeward") in Lesson 54. The Bible has another word for "backward," אחורנית (akhoranit), which is the word of the citation in Section F.

A note on spelling. בחזרה is written as one word. The ב is a prefix, not a separate word, and its vowel is a short e: be-khazara, never "bi-" or "ba-." The ח is the rough khet, like the ch in Scottish loch. The final ה only marks the ending -a; it is not pronounced as a consonant. The stress falls on the last syllable: be-kha-za-RA.

Key Takeaways

- בחזרה (be-khazara) = "back" in the sense of returning to where something came from; it never changes its form - It follows verbs that do not already mean "back": ללכת, לשים, לשלוח, לקחת, לקבל, לנסוע - With לחזור ("come back") and להחזיר ("give back") the idea is already in the verb: do not add בחזרה - בחזרה ל־ + place = "back to": בחזרה לעבודה; with "home," בחזרה הביתה - בדרך בחזרה = "on the way back"; לשם ובחזרה = "there and back"; הלוך וחזור = "round trip" - אחורה = "backward" (direction); מאחור / מאחורי = "at the back / behind"; גב = the back of the body - Stress: be-kha-za-RA; the ח is /χ/

Section D: Grammar Explanation

These are the grammar rules for בחזרה (be-khazara)

1. What kind of word it is. בחזרה is an adverb (תואר הפועל, to'ar ha-po'al) of direction: ב־ ("in") + חזרה (khazara, feminine noun, "a return"). It has one form only. It does not agree with anything: הוא הלך בחזרה, היא הלכה בחזרה, הם הלכו בחזרה, all with the same בחזרה.

2. Where it stands. בחזרה comes after the verb and, if there is one, after the object: אני רוצה את הספר שלי בחזרה (55.6), לקח את המטרייה בחזרה (55.7). It may also stand directly after the verb, before a long object, as in לשלוח בחזרה את החבילה. It does not normally go in front of the verb. When a place follows, בחזרה stands in front of it: בחזרה לעבודה (55.1), בחזרה לתחנה, בחזרה לתל אביב.

3. "Back to" a place. בחזרה + ל־ + place, or "back home," בחזרה הביתה (55.9, 55.12). The word הביתה (ha-bayta) is "home" with the ending of direction, so no separate "to" is needed.

4. When the verb already means "back." Two verbs of the root ח־ז־ר carry the idea of return themselves:

- לחזור (lakhzor), "to come back": חזרתי (khazarti), "I came back"; חוזר (khozer), "coming back"; אחזור (ekhzor), "I'll come back"; חזור (khazor), "come back!" to a man; חזרי (khizri), to a woman - להחזיר (lehakhzir), "to give back": החזרתי (hekhzarti), "I gave back"; מחזיר (makhzir), "giving back"; אחזיר (akhzir), "I'll give back"; החזר (hakhzer), "give back!" to a man; החזירי (hakhziri), to a woman

With these verbs, בחזרה is normally left out. "I gave her the money back" is החזרתי לה את הכסף, not החזרתי לה את הכסף בחזרה, which says "back" twice.

5. "Get back to me." English "call me back" and "get back to me" are not translated with בחזרה. Hebrew says תחזור אליי (takhazor elai), "come back to me," to a man, and תחזרי אליי (takhzeri elai) to a woman.

6. Fixed phrases with בחזרה and its family.

- בדרך בחזרה (ba-derekh be-khazara) — "on the way back": אנחנו בדרך בחזרה מהים (55.8) - לשם ובחזרה (le-sham u-ve-khazara) — "there and back": the ו־ is "and," and the ב־ of בחזרה remains - הלוך וחזור (halokh va-khazor) — "round trip, there and back, back and forth": כרטיס הלוך וחזור (kartis halokh va-khazor), "a return ticket" - בחזרה לשגרה (be-khazara la-shigra) — "back to routine" - חזרה (khazara) without ב־ is the plain noun: חזרה לעבודה, "a return to work"; חזרה גנרלית, "a dress rehearsal"

7. "Backward": אחורה. For a direction away from the front, Hebrew uses אחורה (akhora), not בחזרה. It goes with verbs of movement and placing:

- צעד אחורה (tse'ad akhora) — "step back!" to a man - להסתכל אחורה (lehistakel akhora) — "to look back" - להחזיר את השעון אחורה (lehakhzir et ha-sha'on akhora) — "to put the clock back" (Section E)

In the language of the Bible the word is אחורנית (akhoranit), "backward"; it is still used today for driving in reverse and walking backwards (נסיעה אחורנית, nesi'a akhoranit).

8. "At the back," "behind": מאחור and מאחורי. The prefix מ־ ("from") on אחור ("rear") gives מאחור (me'akhor), "at the back, from behind": הוא יושב מאחור (hu yoshev me'akhor), "he is sitting at the back." Before a noun the word becomes מאחורי (me'akhorei), "behind": מאחורי הדלפק (55.21 below). With pronoun endings:

- מאחוריי (me'akhorai) — behind me - מאחוריך (me'akhorekha, to a man; me'akhorayikh, to a woman) — behind you - מאחוריו (me'akhorav) — behind him - מאחוריה (me'akhoreha) — behind her

9. "The back" of the body: גב. גב (gav) is a masculine noun: כאב גב (ke'ev gav), "backache"; על הגב (al ha-gav), "on the back"; תיק גב (tik gav), "a backpack."

10. "Back" meaning "again." Where English "back" means "once more" ("he's back here again"), Hebrew uses שוב (shuv), "again," not בחזרה: הוא שוב כאן (hu shuv kan).

Common Mistakes

- Doubling. חזרתי בחזרה and החזרתי בחזרה say "back" twice. Say חזרתי and החזרתי. - בחזרה for "backward." "Step back" is צעד אחורה, not צעד בחזרה. - בחזרה for "at the back." "We sat at the back of the bus" is ישבנו מאחור באוטובוס, not ישבנו בחזרה. - "Call me back." Do not build התקשר אליי בחזרה from the English. Say תחזור אליי, or התקשר אליי שוב, "call me again." - Splitting the word. It is one word, בחזרה. The ב־ is joined to the noun and is read be-, never "bi-." - Leaving out the ל־. "Back to work" is בחזרה לעבודה, not בחזרה עבודה. Before a place, בחזרה needs ל־ (or אל), except with הביתה, "home."

Section E: Cultural Context

Frequency and Register

בחזרה is an everyday word, neutral in register, heard in the street, on the phone and in the news. Its formal relative is the verb לשוב (lashuv), "to return," found in writing and in set phrases such as ברוכים השבים below. On a ticket, "return" is the pair הלוך וחזור, "there and back."

"Welcome Back"

The Hebrew greeting for someone who has come back from a journey, a stay abroad or a long absence is ברוכים השבים (berukhim ha-shavim), literally "blessed are those who return." To one man it is ברוך השב (barukh ha-shav); to one woman, ברוכה השבה (berukha ha-shava). It is said at the airport and at work, and to a group that is back after a break.

Two Roots for "Back"

Hebrew has two roots for turning back. The root ח־ז־ר (kh-z-r) is the one of everyday speech: חזרה, לחזור, בחזרה. The older root ש־ו־ב (sh-v-b) is the one of the Bible: שב (shav), "he returned," השיב (heshiv), "he brought back, he answered," שוב (shuv), "again." It survives in the modern word תשובה (teshuva), which means both "an answer," the thing that comes back, and "repentance," a turning back. Section F shows the old root and the old word for "backward" in one verse.

The Clock

Twice a year in Israel the clock goes forward or back an hour. In autumn the news says מחזירים את השעון אחורה (makhzirim et ha-sha'on akhora), "the clock is put back," and the change is called the move to winter time (שעון חורף, sha'on khoref). A memory aid for the direction: summer is "forward" (קיץ קדימה), winter is "backward" (חורף אחורה).

Section F: Literary Citation

The citation is from the Book of Isaiah, 38:8. King Hezekiah is gravely ill, and the prophet Isaiah brings him a promise of recovery and a sign to prove it: the shadow on the steps of Ahaz, which served to tell the time, will go back ten steps. The sign is a picture of "back," and the verse says it in three ways. The same event is told in 2 Kings 20:11, with the same word אֲחֹרַנִּית. The text follows the Masoretic text as printed on Sefaria; the cantillation marks are omitted.

— Isaiah 38:8 (translation: Latinum Institute, kept close to the Hebrew)

F-C: Original Script Only

הִנְנִי מֵשִׁיב אֶת־צֵל הַמַּעֲלוֹת אֲשֶׁר יָרְדָה בְמַעֲלוֹת אָחָז בַּשֶּׁמֶשׁ אֲחֹרַנִּית עֶשֶׂר מַעֲלוֹת; וַתָּשָׁב הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ עֶשֶׂר מַעֲלוֹת בַּמַּעֲלוֹת אֲשֶׁר יָרָדָה.

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

The verse says "back" three times, and none of the three is בחזרה:

- מֵשִׁיב (meshiv). "Bringing back," the participle of the verb השיב (heshiv), "to bring back, to return." It is built on the root ש־ו־ב (Section E). Modern Hebrew uses להחזיר (lehakhzir) for the same act. With הִנְנִי ("behold, I"), the participle means "I am about to bring back." - אֲחֹרַנִּית (akhoranit). "Backward," an adverb made from אחור ("rear"), with the ending ־ית. This is the Bible's word for the direction "back" (Section D, rule 7), and it is still used for driving in reverse. - וַתָּשָׁב (va-tashav). "And it went back," from the same root שוב. The form with וַ־ is the biblical narrative tense, "and it returned" (the sun is feminine, hence the ת־). Modern Hebrew uses the ordinary past: שבה, חזרה.

Other notes:

- בַּשֶּׁמֶשׁ (ba-shemesh). "By the sun": the steps of Ahaz tell the time by the sun's shadow. - יָרְדָה (yardah) and יָרָדָה (yaradah). Two forms of the same verb, "it went down." At the end of the verse the vowel is lengthened: this is the pausal form. - עֶשֶׂר מַעֲלוֹת. "Ten steps." The noun is feminine (מעלות), so the number is the feminine form עשר, just as in the modern עשר דקות, "ten minutes" (55.18 below). - אֶת־צֵל (et-tsel). The word אֶת marks the direct object, and the hyphen joins it to the following word.

F-E: Literary and Contextual Commentary

In Isaiah 38 Hezekiah is told that he will live fifteen more years, and he is given a sign. A shadow that goes down the steps is only time passing; a shadow that goes back up them is time turned round, and the Hebrew says so with the plainest words for "back." The parallel in 2 Kings 20:11 has the same word and the same ten steps, and there too the shadow is "made to go back" (וַיָּשֶׁב אֶת־הַצֵּל), again from the root שוב. For a learner, the verse shows the point of this lesson: Hebrew has more than one word for "back," and each has its own use. The everyday בחזרה of the lesson, formed on the noun חזרה, belongs to the later language; the Bible says it with שוב and אחורנית.

Part D: Grammar Notes for Genre Section

- The present for a story. The story is told in the present (רצים, מחליק, מוציאה), as Hebrew stories often are. The past appears in what a character says about what already happened: נשאר (55.17), נמצא (55.29). - בדרך בחזרה (55.16, 55.27, 55.29). "On the way back." The word בדרך (ba-derekh) is "on the way," and בחזרה follows it. With a starting point, the place takes מ־: בדרך בחזרה מסבתא, "on the way back from Grandma's." - Imperatives and gender (55.17, 55.23). Dan speaks to Yael, so "come" is feminine: בואי (bo'i). Yael speaks to Dan, so it is masculine: בוא (bo). The verb נרוץ (narutz, "we will run") is used for "let's run." - לשם ובחזרה (55.18). "There and back." The ו־ ("and") is joined to בחזרה, which keeps its own ב־: ובחזרה (u-ve-khazara). - רואה אותם רצים (55.21). "Sees them running": a verb of seeing + object + participle, with no word for "while" or "as." - מאחורי (55.21). "Behind, from behind": the preposition of Section D, rule 8. With the counter it is מאחורי הדלפק. - בחזרה לכיס (55.22). "Back into the pocket": בחזרה stands in front of the place it goes back to. - בכל הכוח (55.24). "With all one's strength," a fixed phrase, with the strength as הכוח. - ואנחנו בחזרה בתחנה (55.25). A sentence with no verb: Hebrew has no present "is/are," so בחזרה is the whole predicate, "and we are back at the station." - בריצה (55.26). "At a run": the noun ריצה (ritsa), "a run," with ב־: "in running." - נמצא (55.29). "Was found": from the passive-reflexive verb נמצא (nimtsa), "to be found." - Agreement of numbers (55.18, 55.23). The feminine noun דקות takes the feminine forms עשר and שבע: עשר דקות, שבע דקות.
