From Vergil's Aeneid (6.128-131):
Part F-A (Interleaved Text)
Facilis easy descēnsus descent Avernō to Avernus est is: noctēs nights atque and diēs days patet lies open ātrī black iānua door Dītis of Dis; sed but revocare to recall gradum step superāsque and upper ēvādere to escape ad to aurās, airs, hoc this opus, work, hic this labor toil est. is.
"Facilis descēnsus Avernō est: noctēs atque diēs patet ātrī iānua Dītis; sed revocare gradum superāsque ēvādere ad aurās, hoc opus, hic labor est."
Easy is the descent to Avernus: nights and days the door of black Dis lies open; but to recall one's steps and escape to the upper air, this is the task, this is the toil.
Vergil uses "superas" here to contrast the underworld with the world above. The adjective emphasizes the physical and spiritual journey from lower to upper realms.
-
"superas" modifies "auras" (upper air) -
Accusative plural feminine form -
Used in contrast with "descensus" (descent) -
Part of poetic word order emphasizing difficulty
