What does "for" mean in Marathi, in "this is for you," "I came for water" or "she is studying for the exam"?
English puts "for" in front of the noun: "for you," "for water," "for the exam." Marathi puts its word after the noun, as it does with every postposition you have met: घरात (gharāt), "in the house"; शाळेत (śāḷet), "to school." The word for "for" is साठी (sāṭhī), and it is written joined to the word before it:
- हे तुझ्यासाठी आहे (he tujhyāsāṭhī āhe), "this is for you" - मी पाण्यासाठी आलो (mī pāṇyāsāṭhī ālo), "I came for water" - ताई परीक्षेसाठी अभ्यास करते (tāī parīkṣesāṭhī abhyās karate), "my elder sister is studying for the exam"
You have met साठी already. In Lesson 1, आई कुटुंबासाठी जेवण बनवते, "Mother cooks food for the family." In Lesson 6, बाबा कामासाठी पुण्याला गेले, "Father went to Pune for work." In Lesson 12, the ending -ण्यासाठी, "in order to," was साठी joined to a verb: शिकण्यासाठी, "in order to learn."
साठी answers two questions: for whom? (the person who receives or benefits: आजीसाठी, "for Grandmother") and for what? (the purpose: कामासाठी, "for work"). Most English "for"s are one of these two, and then साठी is the word.
Some English "for"s are said in other ways:
- "For" a length of time already spent takes no word: मी तिथे दोन वर्षे राहिलो (mī tithe don varṣe rāhilo), "I lived there for two years." For a planned stay, साठी is used: मी दोन दिवसांसाठी पुण्याला जात आहे, "I am going to Pune for two days." - "Thank you for" uses बद्दल (baddal), "about": मदतीबद्दल धन्यवाद (madatībaddal dhanyavād), "thank you for the help." - "Hard for me," "good for you" often use the dative -ला: मला हे कठीण आहे (malā he kaṭhīṇ āhe), "this is hard for me." साठी is also possible here: हे तुझ्यासाठी चांगले आहे, "this is good for you."
The noun before साठी. साठी, like every postposition, takes the oblique form, the form you have used before -त, -ला and -वर:
- घर → घरासाठी (gharāsāṭhī), "for the house" - मुलगा → मुलासाठी (mulāsāṭhī), "for the boy" - मुलगी → मुलीसाठी (mulīsāṭhī), "for the girl" - परीक्षा → परीक्षेसाठी (parīkṣesāṭhī), "for the exam" - पाणी → पाण्यासाठी (pāṇyāsāṭhī), "for water" - plural मुले → मुलांसाठी (mulāṃsāṭhī), "for the children"
The pronouns take their possessive form, made oblique: माझा, "my," becomes माझ्या-, and so माझ्यासाठी (mājhyāsāṭhī), "for me." In the same way तुझ्यासाठी, "for you," त्याच्यासाठी, "for him," तिच्यासाठी, "for her," आमच्यासाठी, "for us," त्यांच्यासाठी, "for them." The question words are कोणासाठी (koṇāsāṭhī), "for whom?" and कशासाठी (kaśāsāṭhī), "for what? why?"
On the origin of the word. साठी is inherited from Old Marathi साठीं, which is traced to the Sanskrit सार्थेन (sārthena), "in company with." Its formal partner करिता (karitā), "for, for the sake of," goes back to Sanskrit कृते (kṛte). करिता is used in notices and official writing: फक्त कर्मचाऱ्यांकरिता, "for staff only."
A note on the script. ठ (ṭha) is the aspirated retroflex: the tongue is curled back, and a puff of breath follows. It is not the dental थ (tha). The vowel signs are the long ा (ā) and the long ी (ī): सा + ठी.
- "For" is साठी (sāṭhī), written after the noun and joined to it: आईसाठी, "for Mother" - The noun before साठी is oblique: घरासाठी, मुलीसाठी, मुलांसाठी - Pronouns: माझ्यासाठी, तुझ्यासाठी, त्याच्यासाठी, तिच्यासाठी, आमच्यासाठी, त्यांच्यासाठी - कोणासाठी? "for whom?"; कशासाठी? "for what? why?" - With a verb: -ण्यासाठी, "in order to": शिकण्यासाठी - Formal "for": करिता; time spent takes no word; "thank you for" is बद्दल

Rule 1. साठी comes after the noun. It is a postposition, and it is written as one word with the noun: आईसाठी (āīsāṭhī), "for Mother," never साठी आई. Only in dictionaries and grammars is it written apart.
Rule 2. The noun is oblique. Before साठी the noun takes the same form it takes before -ला or -त:
- Masculine in -आ: मुलगा → मुला-: मुलासाठी, "for the boy" - Masculine and neuter ending in a consonant: घर → घरा-: घरासाठी; so वाढदिवसासाठी (14.6), देशासाठी (14.13) - Feminine in -आ: परीक्षा → परीक्षे-: परीक्षेसाठी (14.5) - Feminine in -ई: आई, आजी, ताई stay as they are: आईसाठी, आजीसाठी (14.18), ताईसाठी (14.22) - Neuter in -ई: पाणी → पाण्या-: पाण्यासाठी (14.4, 14.10) - Plurals end in -आं-: मुलांसाठी (14.3, 14.7), दिवसांसाठी (14.8), विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी (14.12), सगळ्यांसाठी (14.15)
Rule 3. Pronouns use the possessive. For "for me," "for you" and the rest, take the possessive and make it oblique (-आ → -या):
- माझा → माझ्यासाठी (mājhyāsāṭhī), "for me" - तुझा → तुझ्यासाठी (tujhyāsāṭhī), "for you" (14.1, 14.14) - त्याचा → त्याच्यासाठी (tyācyāsāṭhī), "for him" - तिचा → तिच्यासाठी (ticyāsāṭhī), "for her" (14.23) - आमचा → आमच्यासाठी (āmacyāsāṭhī), "for us" - तुमचा → तुमच्यासाठी (tumacyāsāṭhī), "for you (plural, polite)" - त्यांचा → त्यांच्यासाठी (tyāṃcyāsāṭhī), "for them, for him (respectful)"
The question words: कोणासाठी (koṇāsāṭhī), "for whom?" (14.2), also कुणासाठी in speech; कशासाठी (kaśāsāṭhī), "for what? what for?" (14.16).
Rule 4. Whom it is for, and what it is for. The same साठी marks the person who benefits (मुलांसाठी खाऊ, 14.3; आजीसाठी शाल, 14.19) and the purpose (परीक्षेसाठी, 14.5; पाण्यासाठी, 14.4). A planned length of time is also a purpose: दोन दिवसांसाठी (14.8), "for two days."
Rule 5. With a verb: -ण्यासाठी. To say "in order to," put साठी after the verbal noun in -णे, made oblique: शिकणे → शिकण्यासाठी (14.9), "in order to learn." You met this in Lesson 12. The everyday -ायला says nearly the same; -ण्यासाठी stresses the purpose.
Rule 6. साठी can take -ही, "also," and -च, "only." दुसऱ्यांसाठीही (14.29), "for others too"; तुझ्यासाठीच, "only for you, just for you."
Rule 7. When "for" is not साठी.
- Time spent: no postposition. मी तिथे दोन वर्षे राहिलो, "I lived there for two years." - Thanks, praise, blame: बद्दल. मदतीबद्दल धन्यवाद, "thanks for the help." - Feeling and need: the dative -ला. मला थंडी वाजते, "I feel cold"; तिला ते कठीण आहे, "it is hard for her." - Formal writing: करिता, with the same oblique: विद्यार्थ्यांकरिता, "for students."
- Putting साठी first. साठी तू ✗. Say तुझ्यासाठी ✓. - Leaving the noun in the direct form. मुलगासाठी ✗, मुलेसाठी ✗. Say मुलासाठी ✓, मुलांसाठी ✓. - Using the plain pronoun. मीसाठी ✗, तूसाठी ✗. Say माझ्यासाठी ✓, तुझ्यासाठी ✓. - साठी for time spent. मी दोन वर्षांसाठी तिथे राहिलो ✗ (for a stay already over). Say मी तिथे दोन वर्षे राहिलो ✓. - साठी for thanks. मदतीसाठी धन्यवाद is heard, but careful Marathi says मदतीबद्दल धन्यवाद ✓.

साठी is the everyday "for" in every register, from the kitchen to the newspaper. करिता belongs to notices, forms and official letters; on a sign you may read फक्त महिलांकरिता, "for women only," where a friend would say फक्त बायकांसाठी. In older verse the word is written साठीं, with the anusvara of Old Marathi.
A well-known children's poem opens with the rhyme कशासाठी? पोटासाठी! (kaśāsāṭhī? poṭāsāṭhī!), "What for? For the belly!", from the poem of that name by Madhav Julian (माधव जूलियन, 1894–1939). It goes on खंडाळ्याच्या घाटासाठी, "for the Khandala ghat," the hill road and railway between Mumbai and Pune. पोटासाठी, "for the belly," is the everyday way of saying "to earn a living": पोटासाठी तो शहरात आला, "he came to the city to earn his living."
- हे तुमच्यासाठी (he tumacyāsāṭhī), "this is for you" (handing over a present) - कोणासाठी? (koṇāsāṭhī?), "who for?" - कशासाठी? (kaśāsāṭhī?), "what for?" - माझ्यासाठी एक चहा (mājhyāsāṭhī ek cahā), "a tea for me" - तुझ्यासाठी काहीही (tujhyāsāṭhī kāhīhī), "anything for you" - मदतीबद्दल धन्यवाद (madatībaddal dhanyavād), "thank you for the help"

The citation is from Bahinabai Chaudhari (बहिणाबाई चौधरी, 1880–1951), the farmer-poet of Khandesh, near Jalgaon. She could not read or write; she made her songs while she worked in the fields and at home, and her son Sopandev Chaudhari wrote them down. They were published after her death as बहिणाबाईंची गाणी. This is her best-known song, सुगरणीचा खोपा, "The Weaver Bird's Nest." The weaver bird (सुगरण) hangs her woven nest from the branch of a tree, and Bahinabai sees in it a mother's whole care for her young: everything is पिलासाठी, "for the chick." Given here are the first two stanzas. The text follows the Marathi Wikisource transcription (no. 94), which Pratilipi confirms. Some popular printings have झाडाला for झाडाले in line 4 and पिलामधी for पिलामध्ये in line 7.

"Oh, a nest within a nest, the weaver bird's, and a fine one! Look: for her chick she has hung a swing from the tree. The chicks sleep in the nest as in a swinging house; her life is in her chick, her life hung from the tree."
— Bahinabai Chaudhari, सुगरणीचा खोपा (बहिणाबाईंची गाणी; Marathi Wikisource no. 94), stanzas 1–2. Translation: Latinum Institute, kept close to the Marathi.
अरे खोप्यामधी खोपा सुगरणीचा चांगला देखा पिलासाठी तिनं झोका झाडाले टांगला ॥१॥
पिलं निजली खोप्यात जसा झुलता बंगला तिचा पिलामध्ये जीव जीव झाडाले टांगला ॥२॥
- पिलासाठी (F.3). The lesson's word, exactly as you have learned it: पिलू (pilū), "chick, young one," made oblique, पिला-, with साठी after it. The whole first stanza turns on it: the nest, the swing and the hanging are all "for the chick." - झाडाले (F.4, F.8). Bahinabai sang in the Marathi of Khandesh, where the dative ending is -ले instead of standard -ला. झाडाले is standard झाडाला, "to the tree, on the tree." In the same way her मले is standard मला, "to me." - खोप्यामधी (F.1). मधी is the spoken and dialect form of मध्ये, "in, within." खोप्यामधी खोपा, "a nest within a nest": the weaver bird's nest has an inner chamber inside its woven outer shell. - तिनं (F.3). Spoken form of तिने, "by her," the ergative of the past tense (Lesson 13, Rule 3). The verb टांगला agrees with the thing hung, झोका, masculine, not with the mother. - देखा (F.3). "See! Look!" A verb of the old and dialect language; everyday standard Marathi says बघा or पाहा. - पिलं निजली (F.5). पिलं is the spoken plural of पिलू (written पिले), neuter; the past tense निजली agrees with it: neuter plural, -ली, as in ती मुले आली, "those children came." - जसा … (F.6). The relative "as, like," from Lesson 13, here without its partner तसा: "as a swinging bungalow (is)."
The poem works by a double hanging. In the first stanza the mother bird hangs a swing, the nest, from the tree, for her chick. In the second the same verb returns, but what hangs from the tree now is her life: जीव झाडाले टांगला. She cannot leave the tree, because everything she lives for is in that nest. The word बंगला, a modern and slightly grand word for a house, is Bahinabai's joke: the bird's woven nest is a better house than many people have. Bahinabai's songs are taught in Maharashtra's schools, and this one is sung as well as read.

- A list of people and purposes. Diwali shopping is a conversation made of साठी: for whom (आजीसाठी, बाबांसाठी, ताईसाठी, तिच्यासाठी, माझ्यासाठी, तुझ्यासाठी) and for what (दिवाळीसाठी, कामासाठी, फटाक्यांसाठी). Notice how often the साठी phrase stands alone as a whole answer: दिवाळीसाठी (14.17), आणि बाबांसाठी? (14.20). - बाबांसाठी (14.20, 14.21). बाबा, "Dad," is spoken of with the respectful plural, so its oblique is बाबां- and the pronoun for him is त्यांना, "to him (respectful)." - -आयचे, "has to be, is to be" (14.17, 14.18, 14.25). घ्यायच्या आहेत, "are to be bought"; काय घ्यायचे?, "what is to be bought?"; बघायचे, "(you) have to see." The ending is built on the -आय- of Lesson 12's -ायला and agrees with the thing: भेटी, feminine plural, gives घ्यायच्या. - लागते, "is needed" (14.21). The person who needs is in the dative (त्यांना), and the thing needed is the subject: ती (डायरी) त्यांना लागते, "it is needed to him," that is, "he needs it." - थंडी वाजते (14.19). "The cold strikes her": Marathi's way of saying "she feels cold," with the person in the dative, तिला. - साठीही (14.29). -ही, "also," joins on after साठी: दुसऱ्यांसाठीही, "for others too." - The places and customs. Diwali, the festival of lamps in October or November, is the great time for buying presents and new clothes in Maharashtra. Firecrackers are part of it, and so, in many families, is a gift to those in need.

- साठी [saːʈʰiː]: SAA-thee. Two long vowels, both held: saa, thee. - ठ [ʈʰ] is a retroflex t with a puff of breath: curl the tip of the tongue back to the roof of the mouth, then release it with breath. It is not the "th" of English "thin," and it is not the dental थ [t̪ʰ] of थंडी. - In a joined word the stress stays on the noun, and साठी is said lightly after it: आजीसाठी, AA-jee-saa-thee; माझ्यासाठी, MAAJH-yaa-saa-thee.
- -आं- of the plural is a nasal long ā: मुलांसाठी [mulãːsaːʈʰiː], MU-laan-saa-thee. The n of the respelling only marks the nasal; do not say a full n. - -या- in पाण्यासाठी, माझ्यासाठी, तुझ्यासाठी: the half-letter before य is said together with it: PAAN-yaa, MAAJH-yaa, never paa-ni-yaa.
- ठ and थ. साठी, आठवण, ठेवले (retroflex ठ) against थंडी (dental थ). - क्ष in परीक्षा. क्ष is k + ṣ: pa-REEK-shaa. - ऱ्य in गावकऱ्यांनी, देणाऱ्या, दुसऱ्यांसाठी. The "eyelash" ऱ before य is a light r, said together with y: GAAV-kar-yaan-nee. - ळ (ḷ). दिवाळी, सगळ्यांसाठी: the retroflex l, with the tongue curled back. - Visarga in स्वतः. The final ः is a light breath after the vowel: SVA-tah. - Khandeshi forms in Bahinabai. झाडाले, JHAA-daa-le; तिनं, TI-na, with the final nasal hardly heard. - Intonation. A one-phrase question rises at the end: आणि बाबांसाठी? ↗. The answer falls: बाबांसाठी नवीन डायरी ↘.
