Polystratus: Περὶ ἀλόγου καταφρονήσεως (On Irrational Contempt)

The Third Epicurean Leader's Algorithm Against Intellectual Snobbery

PAPYRUS DATA

PHerc. Number: 1497 Author: Polystratus (3rd head of the Garden, after Epicurus and Hermarchus) Work: Περὶ ἀλόγου καταφρονήσεως Date: ~250 BCE Preservation: ~35% readable after unrolling Current Location: Biblioteca Nazionale, Naples Imaging: Multispectral 2018, new readings discovered

DISCOVERY CONTEXT

Found in the Epicurean section of the Villa, badly carbonized but partially unrolled by Piaggio method in 1805. Long dismissed as "merely polemical," recent imaging reveals sophisticated epistemological arguments about knowledge hierarchies and intellectual prejudice - essentially an ancient critique of academic gatekeeping!

Polystratus was defending Epicureanism against philosophers who dismissed it as "philosophy for the uneducated." His response? A devastating algorithmic analysis of how intellectual contempt operates.

THE SURVIVING TEXT

Column XII (Best preserved)

Literal translation of fragments: "...those having] irrational contempt not through proof] but through some preconception] or ambition ...as if the doctrines of others were childish things] they might consider, not seeing together that they themselves are] children in not being able to give an account] of their contempt..."

Column XVII (Partially readable)

"...greatest evil in philosophy is the one who] judges before learning and] contemns before understanding ...for to truth nothing is hostile as the preconception] of wisdom..."

RECONSTRUCTED PASSAGE

English translation: "Those having irrational contempt, not through proof but through some preconception or ambition, [suffer what the blind would suffer if they attempted to teach the seeing about colors]. As if they considered the doctrines of others to be childish things, not seeing that they themselves are children in being unable to give an account of their contempt.

[For to contemn before knowing is a sign not of philosophy but of vainglory. The wise person first learns, then judges; but the vainglorious first judges, never learns.]"

FRAGMENTARY BUT SIGNIFICANT

Column XXIII (Heavily damaged)

"...for not simplicity...but truth...the criterion..."

This fragment suggests Polystratus argued that simplicity vs. complexity is the wrong criterion - truth is what matters, and truth often appears simple.

Column XXIX (Final readable section)

"...Epicurus said...to all humans...not only to the wise..."

The democratic nature of Epicurean philosophy - wisdom available to all, not just self-proclaimed intellectuals.

WHAT'S LOST

The complete work was reportedly 15,000 lines defending Epicureanism against intellectual snobbery. We have perhaps 500 readable lines. Lost sections included: -

Detailed analysis of specific critics -

History of philosophical gatekeeping -

Democratic epistemology theory -

Practical wisdom vs. theoretical complexity -

Why clarity threatens established power

COMPUTATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE

This is essentially an ancient algorithm for detecting bad-faith intellectual criticism!

Polystratus discovered that intellectual contempt follows predictable patterns: -

Dismissal without engagement -

Social rather than logical arguments -

Complexity fetishization -

Credential worship -

Inability to explain objections

Modern parallels: -

Academic gatekeeping studies -

Dunning-Kruger effect (reversed!) -

Democratization of knowledge debates -

Open access movements -

Anti-intellectualism vs. anti-elitism

THE VILLA CONTEXT

This scroll was found near other defensive works - the Epicureans at Herculaneum were collecting texts that defended their philosophy against elite dismissal. The Villa may contain: -

More Polystratus (only this work survives) -

Other "defensive" texts -

Democratic philosophy texts -

Works by women and slaves (Epicurus had such students)

WHY THIS MATTERS NOW

Polystratus was fighting the same battle we fight today - against those who dismiss ideas based on: -

Source rather than content -

Accessibility rather than truth -

Social status rather than logic -

Complexity rather than clarity

His algorithm for detecting intellectual bad faith could be applied directly to modern academic discourse!

THE CALL TO ACTION

This text - partially readable, partially destroyed - shows ancient philosophers grappling with intellectual democracy vs. gatekeeping. The same Villa that preserved this defense of accessible wisdom remains 75% unexcavated.

What other defenses of democratic knowledge lie below? What other algorithms for detecting intellectual prejudice? What other arguments for wisdom belonging to all?

Every day we don't excavate, we participate in the same gatekeeping Polystratus fought against - keeping knowledge buried that could belong to all humanity.
