Greek text (with gaps marked):οἱ Πυθαγόρειοι πλανῶν- ται λέγοντες τοὺς ἀριθ- μοὺς ἐν τῇ μουσικῇ ψυ- χὰς κινεῖν καθ' αὑτούς. οὐ γὰρ οἱ λόγοι τῶν δια- στημάτων ἀλλ' αἱ αἰσθή- σεις τῶν ἤχων ἡδονὴν φέρουσιν. εἰ δὲ τοῦτο ἦν ἀληθές, καὶ οἱ κωφοὶ τῆς μουσικῆς ἀπολαύοιεν ἂν τοὺς ἀριθμοὺς νοοῦντες. ἀλλὰ τοῦτο οὐχ οὕτως ἔχει. ἡ γὰρ ἡδονὴ δι' ὤτων οὐ διὰ λογισμῶν γίνεται.

Literal translation:The Pythagoreans are mistak- en saying that the numb- ers in music move so- uls by themselves. For not the ratios of inter- vals but the sensations of sounds bring pleasure. If this were true, even the deaf would enjoy music by understanding the numbers. But this is not so. For pleasure comes through ears not through calculations.

Latin translation:Pythagorei errant dicentes numeros in musica ani- mas movere per se. Non enim rationes interval- lorum sed sensus sonorum voluptatem ferunt. Si hoc esset verum, etiam surdi musica fruerentur numeros intelligentes. Sed hoc non ita se habet. Voluptas enim per aures non per ratiocinationes fit. [Praeterea si numeri cau- sae voluptatis sunt, cur non omnes mathemati- cae proportiones delectant? Sed solum audibiles et hae non omnes.]

English translation:The Pythagoreans are mistaken saying that numbers in music move souls by themselves. For not the ratios of intervals but the sensations of sounds bring pleasure. If this were true, even the deaf would enjoy music by understanding the numbers. But this is not so. For pleasure comes through ears not through calculations. [Moreover if numbers are the causes of pleasure, why do not all mathematical proportions delight? But only the audible ones and not all of these.]
