THE PHENOMENON

The Shepherd of Hermas dominated Oxyrhynchus. More manuscript fragments survive from this text than from any individual Gospel. The literary elite of 3rd-4th century Egypt couldn’t get enough of this former slave’s visions. Why? Because Hermas performs consciousness archaeology on himself - excavating his own psyche through visionary experience.

...εἶδον πύργον μέγαν οἰκοδομούμενον ἐπάνω ὑδάτων λίθοις τετραγώνοις λαμπροῖς. ὁ δὲ πύργος τετράγωνος ᾠκοδομεῖτο ὑπὸ τῶν ἓξ νεανίσκων τῶν ἐληλυθότων μετ’ αὐτοῦ· ἄλλαι δὲ μυριάδες ἀνδρῶν παρέφερον λίθους, οἱ μὲν ἐκ τοῦ βυθοῦ, οἱ δὲ ἐκ τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἐπεδίδουν τοῖς ἓξ νεανίσκοις. ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ἐλάμβανον καὶ ᾠκοδόμουν.

τοὺς μὲν ἐκ τοῦ βυθοῦ λίθους ἑλκομένους πάντας οὕτως ἐτίθεσαν εἰς τὴν οἰκοδομήν· ἡρμοσμένοι γὰρ ἦσαν καὶ συνεφώνουν τῇ ἁρμογῇ μετὰ τῶν ἑτέρων. καὶ οὕτως ἐκολλῶντο ἀλλήλοις, ὥστε τὴν ἁρμογὴν αὐτῶν μὴ φαίνεσθαι. ἐφαίνετο δὲ ἡ οἰκοδομὴ τοῦ πύργου ὡς ἐξ ἑνὸς λίθου ᾠκοδομημένη.

“Ὁ μὲν πύργος,” φησίν, “ὃν βλέπεις οἰκοδομούμενον, ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ Ἐκκλησία, ἡ ὀφθεῖσά σοι καὶ νῦν καὶ τὸ πρότερον.”

“Οἱ δὲ λίθοι οἱ τετράγωνοι καὶ λευκοὶ καὶ συμφωνοῦντες ταῖς ἁρμογαῖς αὐτῶν, οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἀπόστολοι καὶ προφῆται καὶ διδάσκαλοι καὶ διάκονοι... οὗτοι πάντες συνεφώνησαν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς εἰρήνην ἔσχον καὶ ἀλλήλων ἤκουον· διὰ τοῦτο ἐν τῇ οἰκοδομῇ τοῦ πύργου συμφωνοῦσιν αἱ ἁρμογαὶ αὐτῶν.”

English Translation

...I saw a great tower being built upon waters with bright square stones. The tower was being built square by the six young men who had come with him; but tens of thousands of other men were bringing stones, some from the deep, others from the land, and were handing them to the six young men. And they took them and built.

The stones drawn from the deep they all placed thus into the building; for they were already shaped and harmonized in their joints with the other stones. And they adhered to one another so perfectly that their joints could not be seen. The building of the tower appeared as if built from a single stone.

“The tower,” she says, “which you see being built, I am the Church, who appeared to you both now and before.”

“The stones that are square and white and fit together in their joints, these are the apostles and prophets and teachers and deacons... all these harmonized with themselves and had peace among themselves and listened to one another; therefore in the building of the tower their joints fit together.”
