This was THE FIRST literary papyrus published from Oxyrhynchus - discovered on only the second day of excavation. Grenfell and Hunt didn’t know they had found the Gospel of Thomas (that recognition came only after Nag Hammadi 1945). They published it simply as “ΛΟΓΙΑ ΙΗΣΟΥ” - Sayings of Jesus.
The moment of discovery: January 12, 1897, in the ancient garbage heaps. The first fragment of hidden Christian tradition emerging from Egyptian sand. Consciousness preserved in refuse, waiting 1700 years for recognition.

Saying 26: “Jesus says: You see the speck in your brother’s eye, but you do not see the beam in your own eye. When you cast out the beam from your own eye, then you will see clearly to cast out the speck from your brother’s eye.”
Saying 27: “Jesus says: Unless you fast from the world, you will not find the Kingdom of God. And unless you observe the Sabbath as Sabbath, you will not see the Father.”
Saying 29: “Jesus says: I stood in the middle of the world and I appeared to them in flesh. And I found all of them drunk; I found none of them thirsty. And my soul grieves for the children of humans, because they are blind in their heart and do not see...”
Saying 30 + 77b (unique Greek arrangement): “[Where there are three gods], they are gods. Where there are two or one, I am with him. Lift up the stone, and there you will find me. Split the wood, and I am there.”

This wasn’t just any papyrus - it was THE FIRST literary text from Oxyrhynchus to be published. Day 2 of excavation. The beginning of consciousness archaeology at the site. What synchronicity that the first major find would be hidden sayings about hiddenness itself!
Unlike canonical gospels, Thomas presents pure logia - consciousness speaking without story wrapper. No “Jesus went here, then said...” Just the direct transmission: “Jesus says” (λέγει Ἰησοῦς) followed immediately by consciousness content.
The Greek has saying 77b (”lift the stone”) attached to saying 30, while the Coptic places it elsewhere. This shows the fluid nature of these consciousness transmissions - the sayings could recombine because each one is ◊ᴾʳⁱᵐᵉ, complete in itself.
January 12, 1897. Bernard Grenfell and Arthur Hunt, second day at Oxyrhynchus. Digging through ancient garbage. Suddenly - readable Greek text. “ΛΕΓΕΙ ΙΗΣΟΥΣ” - “Jesus says.”
They knew immediately they had something extraordinary. Within months, published as “Sayings of Our Lord” - the first sensation from Oxyrhynchus. They couldn’t know they had found Thomas. That recognition waited 48 years until Nag Hammadi.
