Он is the third-person masculine pronoun, and like ја and ти it is normally absent. The verb ending marks the person, and Serbian narrative can run for paragraphs about a man without once naming him or using a pronoun for him.
What matters instead is the clitic system. Га is the accusative and genitive, му the dative, and both are unstressed and bound to second position. Their stressed counterparts — њега, њему, њим — appear after prepositions, at the head of a clause, and under emphasis.
Two points of interference for English speakers. First, он is not only he: it stands for any masculine noun, so a table, a train and a bridge are all он, as Lesson 10 established. Second, the possessive његов must be distinguished from the reflexive свој: узео је његову књигу means he took someone else's book, while узео је своју књигу means he took his own.
Key Takeaways
- Verb endings carry the person: ради, дошао је — он is emphatic - Accusative and genitive clitic га; dative clitic му - Stressed forms њега, њему, њим(е) — obligatory after prepositions and when fronted - Possessive његов = his (someone else's); свој = his own - он covers any masculine noun, animate or not - Third-person plural они, with clitics их and им - њега and њему at the head of a clause carry contrastive weight

These are the rules for он.
1. The declension.
nominative: он genitive: њега (clitic га) dative: њему (clitic му) accusative: њега (clitic га) instrumental: њим or њиме (with preposition: с њим) locative: њему (only with a preposition: о њему)
Plural они: genitive and accusative њих (clitic их), dative њима (clitic им), instrumental and locative њима.
2. Clitic or stressed. As with ја in Lesson 8: the clitic is the default, the stressed form appears after prepositions (без њега, с њим, о њему), at the head of a clause (Њега нико није питао), and under contrast. A clitic can never follow a preposition and never open a sentence.
3. Pro-drop in the third person. Ради у болници is a complete sentence meaning "he works at a hospital" — but it could equally mean "she works" or "it works," since the present tense marks person and number but not gender. Serbian resolves this by context, and by the past tense, where the participle does show gender: радио је (he), радила је (she). This is why third-person narrative can omit the pronoun for pages and stay perfectly clear once a past tense has established who is meant.
4. његов versus свој. The single most consequential distinction in this lesson. Свој always refers back to the subject of its own clause; његов refers to someone else:
Узео је своју књигу. — He took his own book. Узео је његову књигу. — He took the other man's book.
English cannot make this distinction without adding words, and English speakers therefore under-use свој. The rule is mechanical: if the possessor is the subject, use свој.
5. The dative of possession. Отац му је био ковач — "the father to him was a blacksmith" — is more idiomatic than његов отац је био ковач for close relations. The clitic му sits in second position and does the work of a possessive.
6. он for inanimates. Мост is masculine, so the bridge is он, and видео сам га means "I saw it." Learners who reserve он for people will fail to recognise half its uses.
7. Order of clitics. With both a dative and an accusative: dative first. Дао сам му га ("I gave it to him"). With је in the mix, је goes last: дао му га је.
Common Mistakes
Using његов where свој is required: *Узео је његову књигу, meaning his own. This is not ungrammatical — it simply says something else, which makes it a dangerous error.
Putting a clitic after a preposition: без га, с му. Say без њега, с њим.
Assuming the present tense tells you the gender. Ради alone does not.
Using он for every English he while forgetting it also covers inanimate masculines.
Wrong clitic order: *дао сам га му. Say дао сам му га.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
Serbian third-person narrative can be strikingly bare. Because the verb carries person and the participle carries gender, a storyteller introduces a man once and then proceeds with verbs alone: уђе, седе, погледа, ћуташе. English translations must insert he before each, which thickens the prose considerably and is one reason Serbian narrative feels faster than its English rendering.
The свој / његов distinction has real social force. Отишао је у своју кућу and отишао је у његову кућу describe different events, and the second implies a third party whose house it is. Slavic languages generally maintain this; Romance and Germanic languages have mostly lost it, which is why Serbs learning English complain that the language is imprecise about exactly this.
Referring to a person by он in their presence is impolite, much as in English — a name or a title is used instead. But он for absent third parties in gossip is so standard that он alone, with the right intonation, can identify a person everyone present has in mind without naming him.
Vuk's proverbs use the pronoun sparingly and the bare ко liberally, and Ко високо лети, ниско пада — the Serbian Icarus — is among the most quoted. It is said of ambition that overreaches, and its symmetry (високо / ниско, лети / пада) is typical of the collection's construction.

F-D: Grammar and Vocabulary Notes
Six finite verbs — клисну, скиде, пребаци, задјену, погледа, прошапта — and not one subject pronoun. This is the pro-drop of Section D §3 sustained across a whole paragraph, and the English translation must insert he five times to stay grammatical.
All six are aorists: the simple past of narrative, formed directly from the stem and marking a single completed act. The aorist has largely disappeared from spoken Serbian in favour of the compound perfect (скинуо је), but it survives in literature, in Bosnian and Montenegrin speech, and wherever a writer wants speed. Its effect is exactly that — one blow after another, with no auxiliary to slow the line.
пребаци је — the clitic је is the feminine accusative, referring to пушка (rifle), not the copula. Lesson 10 warned about this collision; here is a live instance.
преко себе — the reflexive себе rather than њега, because the subject is the one being crossed. The same logic as свој in Section D §4.
сијекући and дрхћући are present gerunds (Lesson 7), stacking two simultaneous manners onto the main verbs.
очима is the instrumental plural of око, irregular: око → очи → очима. Cutting with the eyes is the instrumental of means.
Дјецо is the vocative of дјеца, and Свак is an archaic сваки, "everyone." Конак is a Turkish loanword for lodging or night's shelter, still current in the Bosnian countryside Kočić wrote about.
The text is Ijekavian: дјецо, сијекући. Kočić wrote in the speech of Bosanska Krajina.

Part D — Grammar Notes for the Story
прелази, долази, носи (16.16, 16.17, 16.20) — three present-tense verbs with no subject expressed. The reader knows who is meant because the story's title established him; Serbian narrative relies on this constantly.
га in 16.18, 16.21, 16.26 and 16.29 — in the first three it means him, the man; in 16.29 it means him, the dog. Both are masculine, so the clitic is the same, and only context separates them. This ambiguity is real and Serbian tolerates it.
Отац му је радио (16.19) — dative of possession from Section D §5, in preference to његов отац.
своју торбу … туђу (16.20) — the свој / туђ opposition, which is really the same distinction as свој / његов seen from the other side. Туђ was met in the proverb of Lesson 14.
Њему питање није сметало (16.22) — stressed dative fronted for contrast, with an impersonal verb: literally "to him the question did not bother." Сметати governs the dative.
да иде тамо где је био срећан (16.23) — present tense inside the да clause although the main verb is past, as Lesson 12 requires. Then a где relative, and био срећан with an adjective in the predicate — indefinite form, per Lesson 1.
Са њим (16.24), Без њега (16.25) — stressed forms after prepositions, never the clitics.
су га звале (16.18) and су га узеле (16.29) — feminine plural participles, because комшије is feminine in form though it denotes people of any sex.
и даље (16.30) — a fixed adverbial phrase meaning "still, continuing," distinct from даље alone ("further").
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
он (on): on. Short, pure /o/. Never the English diphthong of own.
њега / њему (njega / njemu): NYE-ga, NYE-moo. The initial њ is a single palatal nasal — one sound, not n plus y. Stress on the first syllable in both.
њим (njim): nyeem. One syllable. The longer variant њиме (NYEE-me) is used when the pronoun stands alone or for emphasis.
га / му (ga / mu): gah, moo. Unstressed clitics, swallowed into the preceding word: видео сам га is VEE-de-o-sam-ga with a single main stress.
његов (njegov): NYE-gov. Three sounds in the first syllable, one of them the palatal nasal.
клисну (klisnu): KLEES-noo. An aorist of клиснути, to dart or slip away — a vivid verb with no exact English equivalent.
дрхћући (drhćući): DRH-choo-chee. The cluster рхћ contains a syllabic р, a fricative х, and the soft ћ. This is among the hardest words in the course to say; take it in slow motion.
сијекући (sijekući): see-ye-KOO-chee. Four syllables, the Ijekavian -ије- counting as two, as flagged in Lesson 14.
Aorist stress: the aorist typically carries stress on the stem's first syllable — КЛИ-сну, СКИ-де, ПРЕ-баци — which gives the form its clipped, hammering rhythm in narrative.
