Lesson 28 Serbian: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

Његов (njegov) - His

CSV entry 28 is his, the possessive. In Serbian, his is његов. Ово је његова књига.: This is his book. Његов брат је овде.: His brother is here. Његови родитељи живе у Нишу.: His parents live in Niš. You met његов in Lesson 16, where it stood beside свој as the word for someone else's. This lesson teaches it properly.

English his is one word that never changes. Serbian његов is an adjective, and it behaves like one: its ending agrees with the noun it describes in gender, number and case. Његов брат, његова сестра, његово име, његови родитељи, с његовом женом: the owner is a man every time, and only the thing owned decides the ending. English works the other way round. Her is a different word from his, but it does not change for a brother or a sister. In Serbian a woman's brother is њен брат, and a man's sister is његова сестра.

The word is built on њега, the genitive of он, with the suffix -ов. The same suffix makes Ненадов, Nenad's, from the name. The plural possessive њихов, their, is built the same way and has exactly the same endings.

Његов also answers to its. Serbian has no separate word: a masculine or neuter thing that owns something is он or оно, so its possessive is његов. And његов is only half of the picture. When the owner is the subject of the sentence, Serbian does not say његов at all but свој, one's own. A man who takes his own key took свој кључ; a man who takes someone else's took његов. Section D explains where the line falls.

Key Takeaways

- његов = his (and its, for a masculine or neuter owner); the owner is a man, a boy or a masculine or neuter thing - It agrees with the thing owned, not the owner: његов брат, његова сестра, његово име, његови родитељи - It declines like an adjective: његов, његовог, његовом, његовим; feminine његова, његове, његовој, његову, његовом - Accusative of a living masculine = genitive: познајем његовог оца - If the owner is the subject, use свој, not његов: узео је свој кључ (his own), узео је његов кључ (someone else's) - A noun that is itself the subject can never take свој: његов брат је дошао - Close relatives are often shown by the clitic му instead: брат му је овде - његов stands alone as a noun: то је његово (that is his), његови (his people) - Her = њен, their = њихов, Nenad's = Ненадов

Section D — Grammar

These are the rules for његов, and for the other ways Serbian says his.

1. Његов agrees with the thing owned. English chooses his or her by the owner. Serbian chooses the word by the owner as well (његов for a man or for a masculine or neuter thing, њен for a woman, њихов for several owners), and then gives that word the gender, number and case of the noun it stands before: његов брат (28.2), његова књига (28.1), његово име (28.3), његови родитељи (28.4). So his sister is његова сестра (28.5), and her brother is њен брат. The owner chooses the stem. The noun chooses the ending.

2. The declension. Његов declines like an adjective. Singular, masculine:

Nominative: његов (njegov) — Његов брат је овде. (28.2) Genitive: његовог (njegovog) Dative: његовом (njegovom) Accusative: његов (njegov) for things, његовог (njegovog) for living beings — Познајем његовог оца. (28.6) Instrumental: његовим (njegovim) Locative: његовом (njegovom) — о његовом рођендану (28.16)

Singular, neuter. It is the same as the masculine except in the nominative and accusative, which are његово (njegovo): Његово име је Петар. (28.3), за његово мишљење (28.14). The genitive is његовог, the dative and locative његовом, the instrumental његовим.

Singular, feminine:

Nominative: његова (njegova) — Ово је његова књига. (28.1) Genitive: његове (njegove) — Без његове помоћи (28.11) Dative: његовој (njegovoj) — његовој сестри (28.8) Accusative: његову (njegovu) — његову сестру (28.5) Instrumental: његовом (njegovom) — с његовом женом (28.9) Locative: његовој (njegovoj) — у његовој кући (28.7)

Plural. The nominative is његови for masculine nouns (28.4), његове for feminine and његова for neuter. The genitive is његових for all genders (28.12). The dative, instrumental and locative are његовим for all genders, also written његовима. The accusative is његове (masculine and feminine) and његова (neuter).

The masculine and neuter also have longer endings, његовога and његовоме. You will meet them in older and in formal writing; in speech and in this course the short forms are the norm. Watch the instrumental: the feminine његовом (с његовом женом) looks like the masculine and neuter locative and dative, while the masculine and neuter instrumental is његовим (с његовим братом).

3. Његов or свој. Lesson 16 gave the rule (and свој has its own lesson, Lesson 9), and this lesson applies it. Свој stands for his, her, my, your, our, their whenever the owner is the subject of the clause. Његов is used when the owner is anyone else:

Ненад је узео свој кључ. — Nenad took his own key. Ненад је узео његов кључ. — Nenad took someone else's key, a man already mentioned. Питала сам га за његово мишљење, а не за своје. (28.14) — I asked, so my own opinion is своје; the opinion I asked for was his.

Two further points follow from the rule.

(a) Свој does not describe the subject. A noun in the nominative is the subject, and свој refers back to the subject, so it cannot sit on the subject itself: the word must be његов: Његов брат је дошао (His brother has come), по тебе не дође његов пријатељ (28.25). Свој брат је дошао is not the way to say his brother came. (The old biblical своји in Section F is a different case: it stands alone as a noun, his own people.)

(b) In a subordinate clause, свој looks to the subject of its own clause, not to the main one: Ненад је рекао да ће узети свој капут (the he of the second clause is Nenad, so his own coat); but Ненад каже да његов телефон ради све горе, where the subject of the second clause is the phone, so Nenad is named only through његов.

4. The clitic instead of the possessive. With close relatives Serbian very often puts the dative clitic му after the first word and drops the possessive (the clitic му is in Lesson 16): Брат му је овде and Жена му је код куће. The possessive adds emphasis and a choice among owners, so it is natural when the sentence is about whose: Ти си његова бака (28.18) says that she is his grandmother, which is the reason she must come.

5. Without a noun. The noun can be left out, and његов stands by itself: То је његово (28.10), that is his; то је његов најдражи (28.23), that is his favourite. In the plural, његови means his people, his family or followers: Његови су већ стигли, His people have already arrived. Compare Vuk's своји in Section F, one's own people.

6. His, her, its. When a thing owns something, the owner's grammatical gender decides, and English its hides this: Видела сам мост и његове стубове (I saw the bridge and its pillars; мост is masculine) but Видела сам реку и њене обале (the river and its banks; река is feminine). A neuter owner behaves like a masculine one: село и његови становници (the village and its inhabitants).

7. Word order. Његов normally stands before its noun. After the noun it is old, biblical or folk: име његово (Section F), where today's text would have његово име.

8. Often no word at all. English his appears far more often than Serbian његов. Where it is obvious whose it is, Serbian says nothing: Боли ме глава (My head hurts), Опрао је руке (He washed his hands), Узео је капут и отишао (He took his coat and left).

9. Possessives from names. A named owner gives the adjective Ненадов, Ненадова жена, Маријин брат: -ов after a consonant, -ин after -а. Once the person is known, његова жена takes over, as in 28.17.

Common Mistakes

The ending chosen by the owner: *његов сестра. The sister is feminine. Say његова сестра.

The plain accusative of a living being: *Познајем његов оца. Say његовог оца (Section D §2).

Masculine endings on a feminine noun: с његовим женом. Say с његовом женом. Likewise његову сестри for the dative; say његовој сестри.

Његов for свој: *Ненад воли његову кућу, when the house is Nenad's own. Say своју кућу (Section D §3).

Свој on the subject itself: *Ненад каже да свој брат долази. Say Ненад каже да његов брат долази.

Њен for a man's thing: њен is for a woman owner. Ово је њена књига of a man's book is wrong: say Ово је његова књига, and keep њена књига for a book that belongs to a woman.

✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾

Section E — Cultural Context

Свој and његов have a social side. Свој is the word for what belongs to the family circle, and туђ (Lesson 14) is its opposite, someone else's, a stranger's. Своји is one's own people, and његови is his people: asking after a friend's family, a Serbian says Како су твоји? (How are yours?), and says goodbye with Поздрави своје! (Give my regards to your people!), where своје points back to the person being addressed. The saying Свој на своме describes a man at home, master of what is his.

The family's patron-saint day, the слава (Lesson 18, and again in Lesson 26), is the clearest case of an inherited његов. The slava passes from father to son, so a man's slava, његова слава, is his father's before it is his. The question Која вам је слава? asks which saint the household descends under, and the answer, Наша слава је Никољдан, tells you a good deal about a family.

Serbian often leaves possessives out, as Section D §8 shows, and a spoken his usually carries weight: његов is chosen when the sentence is about whose thing it is, as in a birthday letter where grandmother, wife and brother must each be placed.

Иво Андрић (28.21) is the writer named in the course introduction, the only Nobel laureate of the South Slavic languages (1961). Проклета авлија (The Damned Yard), a short novel published in 1954, is among his best-known works, which is why it is the book a Serbian reader would think of giving.

Section F — Literary Citation

John 1:11–12, in Vuk Stefanović Karadžić's translation of the New Testament (Нови завјет, Vienna, 1847), as transcribed on Serbian Wikisource. Vuk's text is Ijekavian and keeps the old forms of his time, including the aorist. The two verses set свој and његов side by side: in verse 11 the subject is the one who came, so what belongs to him is своји (his own); in verse 12 the subject is those who believe, so his name belongs to someone else, and the word is његово.

F-C: Original Only

К својима дође, и своји га не примише. А који га примише даде им власт да буду синови Божији, који вјерују у име његово,

F-D: Grammar and Vocabulary Notes

К својима дође — к is the old short form of the preposition ка, to, towards, which takes the dative here: својима, the dative plural of свој used as a noun, to his own (people). Дође is the aorist of доћи, he came. The aorist is a simple past tense that has left the spoken language, but it is the narrative tense of the Bible and of epic song.

И своји га не примише — своји, his own people, is the nominative plural, the subject of the verb. Used alone as a noun, it still names the people who belong to the one who came, the subject of the first clause, which is the biblical idiom (Section D §3a). Примише is the aorist, third person plural, of примити, to receive. Га is the accusative clitic of он.

А који га примише даде им власт — који is those who, даде the aorist of дати, he gave, and им the dative clitic, to them. Власт is power, authority.

Да буду синови Божији — да + present, that they be; Божији is the possessive adjective of Бог, God's, in an older, fuller form (today Божји).

Који вјерују у име његово — here the subject is који, those who. The name belongs to the one who was received, who is not the subject of вјерују, so Vuk writes његово, not своје. Vuk puts it after the noun, име његово, the word order of Section D §7; a modern text has у његово име. Вјерују is the Ijekavian spelling of верују, they believe.

The verse stops at a comma, because the sentence goes on in verse 13.

Two words from one family, своји and његово, and the choice between them is the one you make every time you speak: whose is it, in relation to the subject?

Part D — Grammar Notes for the Letter

Marija, who has appeared in the lessons before, writes to Grandma about her brother Nenad, whose birthday is on Saturday. Almost every sentence is about something of Nenad's, and so almost every sentence has a form of његов.

Драга бако (28.16) — бако is the vocative of бака, the form for calling or addressing someone. A letter opens with Драга (to a woman) or Драги (to a man) and the vocative. Пишем ти о Ненаду — о takes the locative, so Ненаду and његовом рођендану are both locatives, one masculine ending after another.

У суботу (28.17) — у + accusative for the day (у суботу, on Saturday). Хоће да направи — хтети + да + present, wants to make.

Ти си његова бака (28.18) — the possessive is natural here because the sentence says whose grandmother she is (Section D §4); Marija and Nenad share the grandmother, but the letter is about Nenad. Мораш да дођеш, you must come: морати + да + present.

Не жели поклоне (28.19) — жели is the present of желети, and the не goes in front of it. Ради све горе — све before a comparative means more and more: све горе, worse and worse.

Питала сам његову жену (28.20) — питати takes the accusative of the person asked. Шта он жели is an indirect question with шта (Lesson 27). Мало мира — мало takes the genitive, a little peace.

Његов омиљени писац (28.21) — омиљени is the definite adjective, favourite. Иво Андрић is the writer of Section E. Издање Проклете авлије is an edition of The Damned Yard, the genitive of the title after издање. Му is the dative clitic, for him.

Његов стан је пун књига (28.22) — пун takes the genitive, књига. Нема is the negative of има and takes the genitive of what is missing, ове књиге. У њему is the locative of он: стан is masculine, so the flat is он (Lesson 16).

Онај свој колач (28.23) — the subject of понеси is you, so the reflexive свој is the right word, that cake of yours, with a note of fondness. То је његов најдражи — the noun is left out (Section D §5): his favourite (cake). С орасима is the instrumental plural of орах, walnut.

Ненад ће рећи (28.24) — ће is a clitic and stands second. На дијети — на + locative, on a diet. За минут — за + accusative of the time within which something happens.

Само да по тебе не дође његов пријатељ Дејан (28.25) — само да … не + present is a hope, let's hope … doesn't. Доћи по + accusative is to come to fetch. Његов пријатељ is the subject of дође, so it cannot be свој пријатељ (Section D §3a). Вози као луд, drives like a madman.

У његовој соби за госте (28.26) — спаваћеш is the future of спавати, you will sleep. Соба за госте is a guest room, literally room for guests. Код њега има више места него код мене — код + a person, at his place, from Lesson 26; више takes the genitive, места.

Његови пријатељи долазе у шест (28.27) — the present tense for a plan. Ћемо бити is the future of бити.

Немој да кажеш ништа (28.28) — немој + да + present is the negative command, don't say. Ништа goes with a negated verb, not … anything. Његовој жени is dative after кажеш. За сат времена — within an hour, literally in an hour of time. Цела зграда is the whole building: in a block of flats everyone hears everything.

Ненад те љуби (28.29) — љуби, he kisses you, is the usual way to end a letter with greetings from another person. Захваљује ти се на колачу — захваљивати се takes the dative of the person and на + locative for the thing: на колачу, for the cake.

Много те воли твоја унука Марија (28.30) — the ordinary sign-off, your granddaughter Marija loves you very much. Твоја is the feminine of твој, your, and agrees with унука.

Pronunciation Guide

његов (njegov): NYE-gov [ɲɛɡɔʋ]. Њ is one sound, the ny of canyon, not н followed by ј; the е comes straight after it. The stress is on the first syllable in every form: NYE-go-va, NYE-go-vom, NYE-go-veeh. The final в is a clear v and does not turn into f as it would in Russian or German.

његових (njegovih): NYE-go-veeh. Х is a light h [x], as in Scottish loch; in this course it is respelled h.

мишљење (mišljenje): MEESH-lye-nye. Љ is one sound, [ʎ], like the lli of million. Compare њ in његов: љ is a soft l, њ a soft n.

пријатељ (prijatelj): PREE-ya-tely. The first syllable has иј and is said ee-y; the final љ is the soft l of мишљење.

дође, дођеш (dođe, dođeš): DO-je, DO-jesh. Ђ is the soft j [dʑ], as in рођендан, birthday.

Андрић (Andrić): AN-dreech. Ћ is the soft ch [tɕ].

колач, најдражи (kolač, najdraži): KO-lach, NAI-dra-zhee. Ч is the hard ch [tʃ], ж the s of measure, ај as in English eye.

колега (kolega): ko-LE-ga. Stress on the second syllable, and the word is masculine in meaning but declines like a feminine in -а.

Нишу (Nišu): NEE-shoo. Ш is English sh.

захваљује (zahvaljuje): za-HVA-lyoo-ye. Љ once more, followed by у and ј.
