у with the locative is the ordinary Serbian word for in: у кући (in the house), у Београду (in Belgrade), у соби (in the room). Lesson 6 introduced the same preposition with the accusative for motion; here it settles into rest, and the locative case comes properly into view.
The locative is the only Serbian case that never appears without a preposition — it exists solely to follow у, на, о, при, по. Its endings are simple: masculine and neuter -у (град → граду, село → селу), feminine -и (кућа → кући, соба → соби).
The choice between у and на for in/at follows the same lexical lists as Lesson 6: у школи but на факултету, у Србији but на Косову. Learn each noun with its preposition attached.
Key Takeaways
- у + locative = in, at (rest): у кући, у Београду - у + accusative = into (motion): у кућу, у Београд - Locative endings: masculine/neuter -у, feminine -и; plural -има / -ама - на + locative for surfaces, open spaces, institutions: на столу, на пијаци, на факултету - Other locative prepositions: о (about), при (near, upon), по (over, around, according to) - у + accusative also marks clock time and days: у осам, у недељу - The locative never stands alone — always after a preposition

These are the rules for у and the locative.
1. Endings. Singular: masculine and neuter -у (град → у граду, село → у селу), feminine -и (кућа → у кући). Plural: masculine and neuter -има (градовима, селима), feminine -ама (кућама). Feminine i-stems take -и (ствар → у ствари).
2. Consonant changes before -и. Feminine nouns ending in -ка, -га, -ха soften in the locative singular: банка → банци, књига → књизи, сnaha → снаси. This is the first palatalisation, and it catches every learner: у банци, not *у банки.
3. Motion versus rest, again. The accusative-locative pair from Lesson 6 governs this whole lesson. Compare 7.12 and 7.13:
у џепу (loc) — in the pocket / у џеп (acc) — into the pocket у кући (loc) — in the house / у кућу (acc) — into the house
If the verb implies arrival or entry, use the accusative. If it describes where something already is or happens, use the locative.
4. у or на. As in Lesson 6, fixed by the noun. у школи, у болници, у соби, у Србији, у Београду against на факултету, на пијаци, на станици, на послу, на планини, на Косову. There is no shortcut; each noun carries its preposition.
5. The other locative prepositions.
о — about, concerning: причамо о филму, књига о рату при — at, upon, in the presence of: при крају (near the end), при руци (to hand) по — over, around, throughout; also "according to": по граду, по мом мишљењу (in my opinion)
6. Time with у. Clock times and days take the accusative: у осам сати, у недељу. Months and seasons take the locative: у јануару, у пролеће. Years take the genitive: две хиљаде двадесет шесте године.
7. The locative is never bare. Unlike the genitive, dative or instrumental, it cannot appear without one of the five prepositions above. Some grammars therefore call it the prepositional case, as Russian does.
Common Mistakes
Using the accusative for rest: *живим у Београд. Say у Београду.
Failing to palatalise: у банки, у књиги. Say у банци, у књизи.
Reasoning about у versus на. На послу ("at work") is no more logical than у канцеларији ("in the office"); both must be memorised.
Using у for clock time with the locative: *у осам сату. Say у осам сати.
Translating "about" with за: *причамо за филм is dialectal southern Serbian, widespread in speech around Niš but non-standard. Say о филму.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
На послу, на факултету, на пијаци — Serbian assigns на to institutions one attends and open spaces one moves through, and у to enclosures one is inside. The split preserves a much older distinction between bounded and unbounded space, and it survives across all Slavic languages with different lists in each, which is why Poles, Czechs and Serbs all make different mistakes in each other's languages.
По мом мишљењу ("in my opinion") and по обичају ("by custom") show the locative's second life as the case of manner and norm. Sve po redu — everything in its order — is a phrase heard constantly, and није по мени means "it doesn't suit me."
The phrase у ствари ("in fact, actually") is the most common discourse marker in spoken Serbian, wedged into sentences much as English uses "actually." It is a locative of ствар, an i-stem feminine, and its ending -и is one of the few places learners meet that declension early.
Serbian place names take their prepositions in ways that can carry political weight: на Косову and у Косову are both heard, the first traditional and standard, the second occasionally used to signal a view of Kosovo as a bounded state. The folk epics use на Косово and на Косову throughout, several centuries before the question existed.

F-D: Grammar and Vocabulary Notes
по свету is the locative of extent — wandering about, throughout the world, not to a single point. Compare на језеро twice in the passage, both accusative, both marking arrival. The contrast between these two is the whole of Lessons 6 and 7 in three lines.
у њима is the locative of the personal pronoun они: у њима, "in them." Pronouns take the same case endings as nouns after prepositions, and after a preposition the stressed form is obligatory — never the clitic.
Идући is the present gerund (глаголски прилог садашњи), formed from the third-person plural plus -ћи: иду → идући, читају → читајући. It corresponds to English -ing used adverbially and is common in written narrative, rare in speech.
дође and нађе are perfective presents used as narrative past — the same historic present as in Lesson 4. Folk prose moves between aorist, perfect and historic present freely.
дворе is the accusative plural of двор, here a plurale tantum in the folk sense of a palace complex. Modern Serbian would say двор in the singular.
те се купају uses the connective те of Lesson 3, joining with a light consecutive sense: "and so they bathe."

Part D — Grammar Notes for the Description
у малом стану, на трећем спрату (7.16) — adjectives in the locative take -ом (masculine and neuter) and -ој (feminine): малом стану, дневној соби. The definite form is used throughout, as always after ordinals and demonstratives.
на полици (7.18) — palatalisation again: полица → полици, with ц unchanged, but compare банка → банци, књига → књизи. Nouns in -ца are already soft.
у кухињи (7.19) — feminine locative in -и, with њ retained from the nominative кухиња.
гледа на двориште (7.20) beside у дворишту (7.21) — the same courtyard, accusative for the direction the window faces, locative for where the children are. The pair is the clearest illustration of the rule in the whole lesson.
По целом стану (7.22) — по with the locative for diffusion through a space. Note the reflexive passive шири се: "spreads itself."
О комшијама (7.24) — locative plural in -ама after о. Комшија is masculine despite the -а ending, like деда in Lesson 5, and takes feminine endings throughout.
При улазу (7.25) — при is largely confined to fixed expressions in modern Serbian: при крају, при руци, при свести. Here it means simply "by."
У осам сати (7.28) accusative against у тим сатима (7.29) locative — the same noun, two cases, two meanings: a clock time versus a stretch of time regarded as a container.
има много живота (7.30) — existential има with the genitive, from Lesson 2, plus the quantity genitive of Lesson 5.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
у (u): oo. A single pure vowel, unstressed, and leaning forward onto the noun: у кући runs as ookoochee.
Београду (Beogradu): be-O-gra-doo. Four syllables — Бе-о is two vowels, never a diphthong.
банци (banci): BAN-tsee. The palatalised locative of банка. Say ц as /ts/: ban-tsee, not ban-kee.
књизи (knjizi): KNYEE-zee. From књига; г softens to з before the locative -и.
кухињи (kuhinji): KOO-hee-nyee. Four sounds in three syllables at the end: њ then и.
џепу (džepu): DJE-poo. џ is the hard affricate, English j in jam. Contrast ђ in ђак, which is soft.
очима (očima): O-chee-ma. Locative plural of око (eye), which is irregular: око → очи → очима. The same pattern gives ухо → уши → ушима.
Sentence stress with prepositions: in older and more careful speech the stress of a monosyllabic noun can move onto the preposition — у грȃд, на нȍгу. This retraction is a feature of the classical accentual system and is heard from older speakers and on the radio; it is not required of learners.
