What does "that" mean in Vietnamese?
For the autodidact student: the English word "that" does two quite different jobs. It points: "that house", "that is my friend", "I want that one". And it connects: "I believe that he will come", "the book that I bought". The vocabulary list that this course follows gives "that" as a demonstrative/relative pronoun, pointing/connecting, and so this lesson has two halves, because Vietnamese has a different word for each job.
- Pointing: đó (sắc tone, rising). It means "that" and "there", and it is the headword of this lesson. Its two companions are này "this" (near the speaker) and kia "that over there" (far from both people). - Connecting: rằng and là introduce a clause after a verb of saying, thinking or knowing ("believe that …"), and mà joins a clause to the noun before it ("the book that I bought"). None of these three is đó.
Five things differ from English:
1. Đó follows the noun. English puts "that" in front, and Vietnamese puts it behind: người đó (13.6) is "person that", số đó (13.25) "number that", and quyển sách đó (13.9) "book that". With a classifier and no noun, cái đó (13.4) is "that one". 2. Đó is a pronoun and a place word as well. Đó là nhà tôi (13.1) is "That is my house", and Tôi ở đó (13.3) is "I am there". The same word does both jobs, with no change. 3. There are three steps of distance, and not two. Đây or này is near me, đó is the middle step (near you, or already mentioned), and kia is far from us both. Đây là phòng khách. Đó là phòng ngủ. (13.14) 4. "That" between two clauses is not đó. Say Tôi tin rằng anh ấy sẽ đến (13.11), with rằng, and quyển sách mà tôi mua (13.13), with mà. The sentence ~~Tôi tin đó anh ấy sẽ đến~~ is wrong. 5. Đó also makes "some-" words. Ai đó is "someone", gì đó "something", người nào đó (13.10) "some person or other".
The word in the dictionaries. English Wiktionary lists đó as a pronoun with three senses: "that place over there" (Đứng đó làm gì?, 13.5), "that person or thing over there" (Đây là phòng khách. Đó là phòng ngủ., 13.14) and "that idea just described" (Gặp lại nhau bất kể trở ngại, bất kể thử thách. Đó là duyên số., 13.15). It lists besides a Southern sentence particle that stresses a quality ("you see"), and a noun, the name of a bamboo fish trap, which is a different word with the same spelling. The Vietnamese Wiktionary adds the use after question words (Có người nào đó bỏ quên cái mũ, 13.10) and the pair đó đây "here and there" (Section D, rule 8). English Wiktionary's entries for rằng and mà give the connecting words: rằng "that" (13.11), and mà "which, whom, that, where" as a relative marker (13.12).
Already met. Lesson 10 used đây and đó to point (Đây là sách của tôi, Đó là một con mèo), and Lesson 7 had số đó after a noun (7.25). This lesson sets the whole system in order and adds the connecting half.
Why đó, and not another word. There are other words for "that": ấy (Northern; anh ấy "that older brother", that is "he"), đấy (Northern, informal) and kia (far away). The lesson takes đó because it is understood in the North and the South alike, and because it is the word that English Wiktionary and the grammar sources set at the middle step of the system. The others are taught in Sections D and E.
Orthography. Đó is đ + o + the sắc tone mark (the acute accent) on the o. The crossed đ is a different letter from d. The same letters with other tones are other words: đo (to measure), đò (ferry boat), đỏ (red), đọ (to compare, to vie). Tone is part of the spelling.
Frequently asked.
What does "đó" mean in Vietnamese? As a pronoun, "that" or "there"; after a noun, "that" (người đó, "that person").
How do I say "that is my house"? Đó là nhà tôi. (13.1)
How do I say "I think that …"? Tôi nghĩ rằng … (13.21), with rằng, and not with đó.
- Đó = "that, there", and it comes after its noun: người đó (13.6), số đó (13.25), cái đó (13.4) - Đó là … = "that is …": Đó là nhà tôi. (13.1), Đó là gì? (13.2); the negative is Đó không phải là … (13.8) - Three steps of distance: này / đây (near me) — đó (middle) — kia (far): Cái kia thì sao? (13.19) - "That" joining clauses is rằng / là after a verb (Tôi tin rằng …, 13.11; Tôi biết là …, 13.22), and mà after a noun (quyển sách mà tôi mua, 13.13) - Ai đó, gì đó, người nào đó = "someone, something, some person" (13.10, 13.24); sau đó = "after that" (13.16)

The IPA in this lesson is a broad transcription of the Hanoi standard, with the tone written in Chao tone letters after each syllable, as in the earlier lessons. The six tones, in Hanoi values:
- Level, no mark: ma /maː˧˧/ "ghost" - Falling, grave accent: mà /maː˨˩/ "but" - Rising, acute accent: má /maː˧˦/ "mother (Southern); cheek" - Dipping, hook above: mả /maː˧˩/ "grave, tomb" - Broken rising, tilde: mã /maː˧˥/ "horse (Sino-Vietnamese)", with a glottal break in the middle of the vowel - Heavy, dot below: mạ /maː˧˨ʔ/ "rice seedling", short, low, ending in a glottal catch
Key words for this lesson:
- đó /ʔɗɔ˧˦/ — đ is an implosive [ʔɗ], a "d" said with the throat drawn down, and not the English "d". The vowel o is an open [ɔ], like the vowel of British "thought" cut short, and not the closed ô. The acute tone rises. English Wiktionary records the Saigon pronunciation as [ʔɗɔ˦˥]: the same word, a little higher. - kia /kiə˧˧/ — the vowel ia glides from [i] to [ə], and the tone is level. - rằng /zaŋ˨˩/ — r is [z] in Hanoi (in the South a trill or tap). The vowel ă is a short [a], and the grave tone falls. - mà /maː˨˩/ and là /laː˨˩/ — the grave tone falls and is long. - ai /ʔaːj˧˧/ — the word begins with a glottal stop, which English does not write, as in the pause of "uh-oh". - nào /naːw˨˩/ and sao /saːw˧˧/ — ao is [aːw]. - đấy /ʔɗəj˧˦/, ấy /ʔəj˧˦/ and đây /ʔɗəj˧˧/ — ây and ấy are [əj]: a short [ə] and a glide. - người /ŋɨəj˨˩/ — ươi glides [ɨ] to [ə] to [j]. ng at the start of a word is [ŋ], the sound at the end of "sing". - quyển /kwiən˧˩/ and duyên /zwiən˧˧/ — uyê glides from [w] through [i] to [ə]. - phải /faːj˧˩/ and phòng /fawŋ͡m˨˩/ — ph is [f]. The o of phòng is spoken [aw] before ng, and the lips close at the end. - không /xəwŋ͡m˧˧/ — kh is [x], like the "ch" of Scottish "loch". The ô is spoken [əw] before ng, and the lips close at the end. - đứng /ʔɗɨŋ˧˦/ and thực /tʰɨk˧˨ʔ/ — ư is a spread [ɨ], and after it the lips do not close. - đúng /ʔɗuŋ͡m˧˦/ and lúc /luk͡p˧˦/ — u is rounded, and the lips close at the end. - thích /tʰik˧˦/ and thách /tʰajk˧˦/ — th is an aspirated [tʰ], a "t" with a puff of air, and not the English "th". - gặp /ɣap˧˨ʔ/ and gọi /ɣɔj˧˨ʔ/ — g is a voiced [ɣ], a "g" without a full stop, in Hanoi. - nhà /ɲaː˨˩/ and nhìn /ɲin˨˩/ — nh is [ɲ], like Spanish ñ or the "ny" of "canyon". - trước /t͡ɕɨək˧˦/, trả /t͡ɕaː˧˩/ and chỉ /t͡ɕi˧˩/ — tr and ch are both [t͡ɕ] in Hanoi. - rất /zət˧˦/, rửa /zɨə˧˩/ and do /zɔ˧˧/ — r and d are both [z] in Hanoi. - bạn /ʔɓaːn˧˨ʔ/, bát /ʔɓat˧˦/ and bếp /ʔɓep˧˦/ — b is an implosive [ʔɓ], the lips closing with the throat drawn down. - mình /miŋ˨˩/ and anh /ʔajŋ˧˧/ — a final -nh is [ŋ] in this course's transcription, and anh has a glide [j] before it.

✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
These are the grammar rules for đó in Vietnamese:
1. Đó as a pronoun: "that". Đó stands for a thing, a person or an idea that is not at the speaker's side: it is near the listener, or it has just been mentioned. Its commonest frame is đó là + noun: Đó là nhà tôi. (13.1), and the question Đó là gì? (13.2). The negative is đó không phải là + noun (13.8): không phải stands before là and together they mean "is not". When the object is "that one", the classifier comes first: Tôi muốn cái đó. (13.4). A bare đó is usual as the subject of là and as a place word, and for "that one" as an object the speaker says cái đó (the classifier cái, "thing", was met in Lesson 7).
2. Đó follows the noun. English puts "that" before the noun and Vietnamese after it: người đó (13.6), quyển sách đó (13.9), số đó (13.25), cái nồi đó (13.26). With a number, the order is numeral + classifier + noun + demonstrative, as in the example of the grammar sources, sáu bông hoa hồng kia "those six roses over there". The sentence ~~Đó người là bạn tôi~~ is wrong. After a kinship word, đó or ấy makes the word into a pronoun: anh ấy (13.11) is "that older brother", that is, "he".
3. Three steps of distance: này / đây — đó — kia. The grammar sources set the Vietnamese demonstratives in three steps. The first step is near the speaker: này (after a noun: cái này "this one") and đây (alone: "this, here"). The middle step is đó (and its Northern cousins ấy and đấy), for what is near the listener or has already been mentioned. The far step is kia, "that over there", for what is far from both people. In the lesson, Đây là phòng khách. Đó là phòng ngủ. (13.14) uses the first two steps in one breath, and Nam uses kia in 13.19 and 13.20, for the second pot, which is farther off than the first. The question word is nào "which": cái nào? "which one?".
4. Place: ở đó, đứng đó. Đó also means "there". It needs no preposition: Tôi ở đó. (13.3), Đứng đó làm gì? (13.5). The verb ở (Lesson 2) is "be at", so ở đó is "be there". With a verb of going, the place follows directly: đi đó "go there".
5. Time: lúc đó, sau đó. Đó after a time word points back to a time already mentioned: lúc đó "at that time" (13.7), hôm đó "that day", ngày đó "that day". The commonest of these is sau đó "after that, then" (13.16, 13.30), and its companions are trước đó "before that" and từ đó "since then". Sau đó goes at the beginning of the sentence, or after the subject.
6. Indefinite: ai đó, gì đó, người nào đó. After a question word, đó makes the word indefinite: ai đó "someone" (13.24, 13.25), gì đó "something" (Tôi muốn ăn gì đó "I want to eat something"), người nào đó "some person" (13.10), ở nơi nào đó "somewhere". The Vietnamese Wiktionary lists this use of đó with the example of 13.10. Without đó, the same words are questions, "who?" and "what?" (ai, gì). Note that Ai đó? as a question is also said, as in Lesson 10 (10.29), where it means "Who is there?", with đó as "there"; as a statement, Ai đó gọi cho Nam (13.24) has ai đó as "someone". Intonation and the rest of the sentence tell the two apart.
7. The other "that": rằng, là and mà. When "that" joins two clauses, đó is not used.
- Rằng follows a verb of saying, thinking, believing or knowing: Tôi tin rằng … (13.11), Tôi nghĩ rằng … (13.21), nói rằng "say that". A published study of the left periphery of the Vietnamese clause reports that rằng is largely restricted to formal written registers. - Là does the same job in speech: Tôi biết là bạn đói. (13.22), nói là "say that", nghe nói là "I heard that". The same study reports là as more common in colloquial registers; take both statements as tendencies, and not as rules. In everyday speech the linking word is often left out: Tôi nghĩ cơm hôm nay ngon. - Mà follows a noun and opens a clause that describes it: quyển sách mà tôi mua hôm qua (13.13) "the book that I bought yesterday", con cá mà chúng ta mua sáng nay (13.23), bài kiểm tra mà tuần trước mình làm (13.12). The guide at Vietlingo explains that mà sits right after a noun and pins a clause onto it, like English "that" or "which", and adds that Vietnamese can often leave it out. Compare mà "but, yet" (Lessons 8 and 11; 8.13, 11 F.1): già mà vẫn khoẻ is "old but still strong". The learner decides from the place: after a noun it is "that", between two ideas that disagree it is "but".
8. Fixed phrases.
- Đó là lý do … — "That is the reason …" (13.22) - Đó là + noun — "That is …" with a following idea (13.15) - gọi là — "is called" (13.27) - đó đây — "here and there": the Vietnamese Wiktionary gives đi khắp đó đây "to travel all over" - đây … đó — the pair "here … there", "I … you" in a familiar voice (Section E)
9. Đó at the end of a sentence. In Southern speech, đó at the end of a sentence stresses the quality just stated, "you see": the Wiktionary example is Hơi bị hay đó! "Really good, I must say." In the North the particle is đấy, and the Southern đó replaces it. A learner may hear it, and a learner is safe if they leave it for later.
10. Đó as a noun. There is another word đó, the name of a bamboo fish trap. English Wiktionary lists it as a separate entry, and the context makes the meaning clear.
- Putting đó before the noun. ~~Đó người~~, ~~đó sách~~ are wrong. Say người đó (13.6), quyển sách đó (13.9). - Using đó as the "that" between clauses. ~~Tôi tin đó anh ấy sẽ đến~~ is wrong. Say Tôi tin rằng anh ấy sẽ đến. (13.11) - Using rằng for "the book that". ~~Quyển sách rằng tôi mua~~ is wrong. After a noun the word is mà (13.13), or nothing at all. - Confusing mà "that" with mà "but". After a noun it is "that" (13.12, 13.13). Between two contrasting ideas it is "but". - Forgetting the classifier. For "I want that one" say Tôi muốn cái đó. (13.4), and not only ~~Tôi muốn đó~~. - Forgetting phải in the negative. Đó không phải là nhà tôi. (13.8). ~~Đó không là nhà tôi~~ is not the sentence that a native speaker says. - Mixing up the steps. Đây is near me and đó near you, and kia is far from both. For two things at different distances, use both (13.14, 13.19). - Dropping the marks. đó (that) is not đỏ (red), đò (ferry boat), đo (to measure) or đọ (to compare), and đ is not d: đó is not dó.

Frequency and register. "That" is rank 13 in the vocabulary list that this course follows. Đó is neutral and is used in every setting, in speech and in writing, and the pointing is so basic that a child learns it before any other word of the kind. Rằng is the written word for "that", and là the spoken one (rule 7). Mà is everywhere in speech, and is often left out.
North and South. English Wiktionary records the Hanoi pronunciation of đó as [ʔɗɔ˧˦] and the Saigon one as [ʔɗɔ˦˥]. In the North the middle step of the system has three words, đó, ấy and đấy: ấy follows a kinship word (anh ấy, cô ấy, ông ấy) and đấy is informal, as pronoun and as sentence-final particle. English Wiktionary adds that in the Southern dialects đó and vậy usually take the place of the Northern đấy at the end of a sentence. A learner who only knows đó is understood on both sides of the country.
Đây and đó: "I" and "you". In familiar and rather blunt speech, the pair đây "this" and đó "that" can stand for "I" and "you". The Wikipedia article on Vietnamese grammar gives the exchange đây đi chợ, đấy có đi không? "I am going to the market; are you going?", where đây is the speaker and đấy the listener. The Vietnamese Wiktionary describes đó in this use as familiar or condescending. The learner should hear it and should not use it with strangers or elders, for whom the kinship words of the earlier lessons are the polite choice.
The fish trap. The noun đó (rule 10), a bamboo fish trap, shares its spelling and its tone with the pointing word, and the two are separate dictionary entries.
The kitchen. The dialogue of this lesson takes place in Nam's kitchen after the market and the cooking of Lesson 12. Anna points at the pots and asks what they are, and pointing at things and asking their names is the natural home of đó and kia. The rice cooker (nồi cơm điện, literally "electric rice pot") is a common piece of kitchen equipment.

Đó là những lẽ phải không ai chối cãi được.
Đó points back. The sentence Đó là những lẽ phải … has no noun for đó to follow. It is the pronoun of rule 1, and it stands for the whole of the sentence that has just been quoted: "that (what I have just said) is …". It is the middle step of the system, because the thing pointed at is not the speaker's, and it was said a moment ago. This is the "that idea" sense of English Wiktionary (13.15).
The plural. In Vietnamese a noun does not change in the plural, and the plural is marked by những before the noun: những lẽ phải "truths". The speaker does not say "that is a truth", and the plural những gives the sentence the weight of principle: "those are truths". The singular đó stays the same.
Two words for "truth". Lẽ is "reason" and phải is "right, correct" (as in không phải là, rule 1). Lẽ phải together is "what is right and reasonable", and the sentence calls the human rights of the French text self-evident.
A relative clause with no mà. The clause không ai chối cãi được "no one can deny" follows the noun lẽ phải directly. With the word of rule 7, the sentence would be những lẽ phải mà không ai chối cãi được; the guide at Vietlingo says that mà can often be left out, and here the writer leaves it out. The English "truths that no one can deny" has "that" in the same place. This is the connecting half of the English "that", and Vietnamese shows it as a space between two words.
Rằng, in the same document. The Declaration's final section opens with these words: Vì những lẽ trên, chúng tôi, Chính phủ Lâm thời của nước Việt Nam Dân chủ Cộng hòa, trịnh trọng tuyên bố với thế giới rằng: "For these reasons, we, the Provisional Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, solemnly declare to the world that:". Here rằng is the written, formal "that" of rule 7, after the verb tuyên bố "declare", and it opens the declaration itself: Nước Việt Nam có quyền hưởng tự do và độc lập "Vietnam has the right to enjoy freedom and independence". So the one text has the pointing "that" (đó) and the connecting "that" (rằng).
The text. The two online texts consulted agree on these two sentences, but they differ in spelling and in a few later phrases (for example dân Việt-Nam against dân tộc Việt Nam, and tự-do và độc-lập ấy against tự do, độc lập ấy), and this lesson follows the Wikisource wording in modern spacing. The 1945 print used hyphens between the syllables of compounds (tự-do, bình-đẳng), and this lesson prints them without, as Vietnamese does now. The French quotation is set in guillemets («»).

After that. The scene begins with Sau đó (13.16), where đó points back to the cooking at the end of Lesson 12 (rule 5). The narrator uses the same words to end the scene (13.30), and so sau đó opens and closes the dialogue. Nhìn quanh bếp is "look around the kitchen": quanh is "around" and follows the verb. Chỉ vào is "point at" (vào "into, at" was met in Lesson 12), and một cái nồi "one pot" has the classifier cái between the number and the noun.
Cái đó, đó, cái kia. Anna asks Cái đó là gì? (13.17) of the pot nearest to Nam, and Nam answers with the bare đó: Đó là nồi cơm điện. (13.18). The question and the answer have the classifier and the pronoun in the two forms of rule 1. Nồi cơm điện is a compound of three nouns, "pot-rice-electric", the rice cooker. Anna then asks about a pot farther away: Còn cái kia thì sao? (13.19). Còn means "and as for", thì marks the topic, and sao is "how, what about": "And what about that one over there?". Nam answers with kia again (13.20), the far step of rule 3. The clause dùng để nấu canh is "used to cook soup", from Lesson 12 (dùng để).
Rằng and là, two thats. Anna's Tôi nghĩ rằng cơm hôm nay rất ngon (13.21) has the formal rằng after nghĩ, and Nam's Tôi biết là bạn đói (13.22) the spoken là after biết (rule 7). Both are "that", and either could be left out. Đó là lý do tôi nấu nhiều cơm has đó as the pronoun of rule 1, pointing back at his knowledge, and a relative clause with no mà: lý do [mà] tôi nấu nhiều cơm "the reason (that) I cooked a lot of rice".
Mà, the relative. In 13.23, Con cá mà chúng ta mua sáng nay ngon lắm, mà stands after the noun con cá and opens the clause chúng ta mua sáng nay "we bought this morning": "the fish that we bought this morning". Chúng ta is "we" including the person addressed. The main verb is the adjective ngon "tasty", with lắm "very" after it. Compare the main clause Cơm hôm nay rất ngon in 13.21, with rất before.
Ai đó, số đó. The telephone rings in 13.24: Ai đó gọi cho Nam, "someone is calling Nam" (rule 6). Ai alone would be the question "who is calling Nam?". Nam looks and says Tôi không biết số đó (13.25) "I don't know that number", with đó after the noun số (rule 2). Có lẽ is "perhaps", and gọi nhầm is "call by mistake" (nhầm "wrongly"), and so the second ai đó is again "someone".
Tên cái nồi đó. In 13.26, tên cái nồi đó is "the name of that pot": the noun tên "name" is followed by the possessed thing, cái nồi đó, with the pointing word last. Nothing joins them, because Vietnamese puts the owned word first. Chưa biết is "do not know yet". Gọi là (13.27) is "is called": Cái đó gọi là nồi cơm điện is the first sentence that Anna can use to ask for a name, and she asks again with Đó là gì? (13.2).
The last lines. In 13.28, Đó là từ mới hôm nay, "That is today's new word", từ mới is "new word" and hôm nay "today" comes last. In 13.29, để không quên is the negative aim of Lesson 12 (12.9, 12.29), where Anna also writes a new word in her notebook so as not to forget it. In 13.30, ngồi ăn cơm is "sit and eat rice" (a meal), cùng nhau "together", and rửa bát "wash the bowls".

The letters of this lesson. Vietnamese adds to the Latin alphabet ă, â, đ, ê, ô, ơ, ư, and marks five of its six tones with à á ả ã ạ. A letter may carry a vowel mark and a tone mark at once: đứng (ư + sắc), đúng (u + sắc), rằng (ă + huyền), đẳng (ă + hỏi), nghĩ (i + ngã), lẽ (e + ngã), cãi (a + ngã), sẽ (e + ngã), trước (ươ + sắc), được (ươ + nặng), người (ươ + huyền), hiện (iê + nặng), duyên (uyê, level), quyển (uyê + hỏi), quyền (uyê + huyền), điện (iê + nặng), kiểm (iê + hỏi), biết (iê + sắc), viết (iê + sắc), nhiều (iê + huyền), cười (ươ + huyền), hứa (ư + sắc), rửa (ư + hỏi), chưa (ư, level), vở (ơ + hỏi), trở (ơ + hỏi), ở (ơ + hỏi), lợi (ơ + nặng), lời (ơ + huyền), mới (ơ + sắc), cơm (ơ, level), nồi (ô + huyền), hôm (ô, level), muốn (ô + sắc), số (ô + sắc), thực (ư + nặng), tự (ư + nặng).
Where the tone mark goes. On the main vowel of the syllable. In iê it goes on the ê: hiện, điện, kiểm, biết, viết, nhiều. In uô it goes on the ô: muốn. In ươ it goes on the ơ: người, trước, được, cười. In uyê it goes on the ê: quyển, quyền, duyên. In ia, ua, ưa with no final consonant it goes on the first vowel: kia, mua, chưa, hứa, rửa. When a syllable has a vowel that already carries a mark (ê, ơ, ô, ư, â, ă), that vowel takes the tone mark.
Đó and its neighbours. đó /ʔɗɔ˧˦/ (that, there), đo /ʔɗɔ˧˧/ (to measure), đò /ʔɗɔ˨˩/ (ferry boat), đỏ /ʔɗɔ˧˩/ (red) and đọ /ʔɗɔ˧˨ʔ/ (to compare, to vie) are spelt with the same letters and differ in tone alone. Dó would be a different letter at the beginning: d is [z] in Hanoi, and đ is the implosive [ʔɗ]. The vowel o of all these is the open [ɔ], and not the closed ô [o] of đồ (thing) or đố (a riddle).
The sound [z] and its spellings. In the Hanoi standard, d, gi and r are all [z]: do /zɔ˧˧/, dùng /zuŋ͡m˨˩/, gì /zi˨˩/, rằng /zaŋ˨˩/, rất /zət˧˦/, rửa /zɨə˧˩/, ra /zaː˧˧/, duyên /zwiən˧˧/. The three spellings are to be learnt with the words. In the South d is often [j] and r is a trill.
The letters g, ng and ngh. The words gặp and gọi begin with g [ɣ]. The sound [ŋ] is spelt ng before a, ă, â, o, ô, ơ, u, ư (người, ngon, ngồi, ngủ, ngại) and ngh before e, ê, i (nghĩ).
The letters c, k, q, kh. The sound [k] is spelt c before a, ă, â, o, ô, ơ, u, ư (cá, có, cơm, cùng, cười), k before e, ê, i, iê (kể, kêu, kia, kiểm) and qu when it is followed by [w] (quên, quanh, quyển, quyền, qua). Kh is a different sound, [x], as in không, khách.
Final -ng, -c, -ch, -nh. After o, ô, u the lips close at the end of -ng and -c: không [xəwŋ͡m], phòng [fawŋ͡m], dùng [zuŋ͡m], cùng [kuŋ͡m], chúng [t͡ɕuŋ͡m], đúng [ʔɗuŋ͡m], lúc [luk͡p]. After ư, ă, a they do not: đứng [ʔɗɨŋ], những [ɲɨŋ], rằng [zaŋ], thực [tʰɨk], được [ʔɗɨək], trước [t͡ɕɨək]. The final -nh is [ŋ] here, with a glide [j] after a (anh [ʔajŋ], canh [kajŋ], quanh [kwajŋ]). The final -ch in thích, sách, khách and thách is a [k]-like stop in Hanoi, with a glide before it in sách, khách and thách.
Tone pairs to drill. đó (that) / đỏ (red) / đò (ferry) / đo (measure); mà (that; but) / ma (ghost) / má (mother; cheek) / mả (tomb); là (be) / lá (leaf) / la (shout); số (number) / sổ (notebook); bạn (friend) / bàn (table) / bán (sell) / bận (busy); nồi (pot) / nối (join) / nổi (float); gọi (call) / gối (pillow).
