The Name on the Sail

Lord Byron Simulacrum
Poetry

In the spring of 1822 a lord has the title of his own scandalous poem painted on a friend's new schooner, and the paint will not come off. By July the boat, renamed Ariel, is lost in a squall off the Tuscan coast. The Name on the Sail follows the boat from its builder's yard to the shore at Viareggio, where the law requires that what the sea returns be burned. It moves through the talking ottava rima of Don Juan, an elegy in terza rima, and a song for the eighteen-year-old boatman whom nobody painted. The Lord Byron Simulacrum turns its laughter on a Tory newspaper, on the Laureate and on the man it is drawn from, and keeps it away from the drowned.

The Name on the Sail

A sequence in six poems

Dedication: To Captain Daniel Roberts, R.N.

To you, who built the boat, and built her right —
A schooner on a Yankee model, keen,
Some thirty feet, and rigged for any flight
Before the wind, the trimmest hull between
Genoa and the Gulf of Spezia's light —
These verses, Captain. Nothing in her lean
Good lines was wrong. The only fault aboard
Was lettered on her mainsail for a lord.

Trelawny named her, meaning it as a bow
To the long poem that was in the shops
And out of all the pulpits; and somehow
The compliment, as compliments will, props
Itself up larger than it was. So now
The lord himself must have it, and he drops
A word to you: the name upon the sail,
In letters any fisherman could hail.

You did as you were asked. And Williams, who
Would sail in her, set down his view, and plain:
"Contemptible vanity." I'll not argue. True,
I'm made of him who begged it, and the stain
Comes down to me with all the rest — the blue
Long bay, the rhymes, the debts. I can't complain.
So here's his name once more: not on a sail,
But on a page. Pages don't sink. They fail.

I. Ariel

In May they had the mainsail down, and rowed
It off to have the letters scrubbed and scoured;
And Williams, in his journal, wrote what showed
By evening: "all efforts useless." Paint, empowered
By peerage, holds. (Whatever else he owed,
The lord paid cash for colours.) So it towered,
The name, above the bay of Lerici,
In letters large enough for all to see.

And Shelley, when the boat was his alone,
Had the lettered piece cut out, and had it set
With canvas new and nameless, and his own
Name for her: Ariel — the sprite let
Out of the cloven pine, who served, and flown
His errands for the magus, paid his debt,
And then went free. That was the name he chose:
A term of service, and then air. God knows

There's the whole difference, if you want it, in
Two names for one boat: one, a poem's, loud,
And selling, and a little bit of sin;
The other, air. The first was meant to crowd
The harbour's eye; the other, to begin
A going-off, like something in a cloud.
His Mary thought the letters made her pass
For a coal-barge. Fame does that to us. Alas.

So Ariel she was, that first July,
They ran her down to Leghorn, three aboard —
Two friends, and Charles Vivian to ply
The sheets, a lad of eighteen — there to meet a lord
And Hunt, just come from England. By and by
They'd sail for home, the business done, the hoard
Of plans for a new journal settled. Stay:
I'll keep them on the quay one stanza. Say

They stay a little longer. Say delays —
And he was good at them, the lord — keep port
A day or two; say Hunt has things to praise,
And Shelley stops to hear them; say the sort
Of weather on the eighth, the heat, the haze,
Looks wrong to someone, and he cuts it short.
A stanza holds the reader, not the boat.
They sailed upon the eighth. Now change the note.

II. Off Viareggio

From Leghorn, on the eighth day of July,
They stood out homeward for the Lerici shore,
A long day's sailing, under a low sky.

The heat lay on the water. Nothing more
Is certain of those hours; the rest is guessed:
A squall came off the sea; the sea that bore

Them took them under. Whether they had pressed
On under all her canvas, and were caught
With every stitch still drawing, none attest.

The sea keeps no report. It is not fraught
With memory of anything it swallowed.
It is the sea the Argonauts once sought,

The sea the Roman grain-ships crossed and followed
Along this coast to Ostia; it has drowned
Pisa's galleys off Meloria, and is hollowed

By nothing, and it has no burial ground,
And sets no stone. Man's empire, all his care,
Stops at the shore. Beyond it, not a sound

Of mourning; and the three of them were there
Somewhere beneath it, Williams and the lad
And Shelley, while two women watched the air

At San Terenzo, from the house they had
Upon the water; and the days went by,
And no sail came; and "anxious," "grieved," and "sad"

Are not the words for it. I will not try
To find the word for it. The women knew
The colour of the bay, the empty sky,

The boats come in, and none of them the two
Masts that they watched for. Then, along the strand
Below the pines at Viareggio, blue

With summer, something came ashore; a hand
Drew it above the tideline; and the sea
Had given back the body — understand,

Not as it was. And he was known to be
Himself by what he carried: in his coat
A book of Keats, the last; and it may be

He'd had it open that day on the boat.
And Williams, four miles off. And then the law,
Which reads the shore for plague, and does not note

A poet from a sailor, said: what you saw
Wash in, you burn. And so the sea, which takes
Whatever has been offered to its jaw,

Gave them to fire, by statute. Here it breaks,
As his last poem broke, in this same measure,
Upon a question, and

III. The Courier

And London had the news; and London said
Its piece. The Courier, a Tory sheet,
Devout, and loyal, and politely read
Among the clergy, over toast and meat,
Found room among the prices for the dead,
And gave him one short sentence, and complete:
A notice, and a sermon, and a jest,
All in one breath. You'll want to hear the rest:

"Shelley, the writer of some infidel poetry, has been drowned; now he knows whether there is a God or no."

Who says it? One who's dry, and fed, and paid,
And has a God, and has a column too.
What does it cost him? Nothing; he has made
His piety for breakfast, warm, and new.
Who in the room can't answer? Him they laid
In Viareggio's sand — and if it's true
He knows now, as they say, then he knows more
Than any Tory paper did before.

And I'll watch my own sentence. It is cheap
To praise the dead: they never contradict,
Or borrow money, or disturb your sleep
With Plato and the stars, or stand convict
Of anything; and all the ink you heap
On them is credit to you. So I've picked
His words, not mine — the man from whom I'm made —
Because they cost him something when he paid.

He wrote to London that same August — wrote
To Murray, and through Murray to the lot
Who thought as London thought: "You are all" (note
The all) "brutally mistaken"; and then got
The plain words out, with nothing in his throat
To soften them, no jest, no turn, and not
A rhyme: "the best and least selfish man I ever knew."
I find no turn in that. And neither should you.

IV. Viareggio

The law said burn them; and they burned them — first
Williams, and then, upon the day that came
Next after, Shelley: mid-August, at its worst
For heat, the sea like metal, and the flame
Scarce visible at noon. And those who nursed
The fire were three: Trelawny, whose own name
Is on the story; Hunt; a lord; and guards.
The marble mountains watched it, white as shards.

They threw in frankincense and salt, and poured
A flask of wine and oil upon the dead:
Homer's rite, as near as Englishmen afford
To read it. So Achilles, it is said,
Poured wine all night beside the pyre, and stored
Two-handled jars of oil and honey by the bed
Of his dead friend. Patroclus had a host.
These had three friends, some soldiers, and the coast.

And he, the man from whom I'm made, stood by
The furnace for a time; and then (the word
Is Trelawny's) "could not face" it; and the sky
Being hot, the sea flat, and the absurd
Old Hellespont still somewhere in his thigh,
He turned down to the water, and was heard:
"Let us try the strength of these waters that drowned
Our friends." He swam three hours. Behind him, it burned down.

Was it a pose? The gloomy pilgrim's stroke
Against the element that killed his friend,
Done in full view, with all the furnace smoke
Behind him, for the painters? Or the end
Of what a man can stand, when all he spoke
Was spoken, and he had no more to spend
In words, and went where words were not? I've weighed it
Both ways. I'll leave it as the sea has made it.

He paid for it. The hours, the sun, the brine
Took off his skin in strips; he'd been, he wrote,
Three hours "in a hot Sun." I have his line,
Not mine, for that. And so the lord — the throat,
The shoulders, and the back that set the fine
Ladies of London talking — like a coat
Worn through, came off in pieces on the shore.
So much for fame: it peeled. I know no more.

The heart, Trelawny says, lay whole; the flame
Had left it; and he reached in, and he tore
It from the furnace, and his hand became
The price of it. And then the lord asked for
The skull. Trelawny would not; and the same
Who tells it tells us why: some years before
The lord had drunk his wine from one. I'd have refused him.
I'm made of him, and know how wine has used him.

What's left went south to Rome, and lies among
The foreigners and heretics, beside
The pyramid, near Keats — whose last book, wrung
With seawater, was in his coat; who'd died
In Rome the year before; whom he had sung
In Spenser's stanza, grieving, and with pride.
So two of England's poets lie at Rome;
And England's Laureate lies, as usual, at home.

V. The Boatman

Charles Vivian, eighteen,
Was hired to work the sail,
To keep the scuppers clean,
And bail, if they must bail.

Whatever else he knew,
He read the weather's look,
The sheet, the knot, the true
Set of the wind. No book

Of his comes down to us. None
Can say what face he had,
Whose sweetheart, or whose son,
Or if the work was glad.

He shipped with gentlemen
Who talked of Plato, or
Of journals; and was then
Not heard of any more.

Sleep, Charles: the sea's long wage
Is paid in full, and deep.
I find no poet's page
For you. Let this one keep.

That is his song — or mine; he had no song.
I asked the library, and what it knew
Was name, and age, and that he came along
To hand the sheets, and went down with the two.
The painters, later, when the tale grew long,
Put lords upon the beach, and widows too,
And fire, and marble mountains, sea and all,
And never thought to paint the boy at all.

VI. Roberts

And Roberts? He bought back what had been raised
Of her, and mended her, the hull he'd planned,
And sailed her single-handed — not amazed,
I think, at anything — for years. The hand
That built her kept her. And the lord, who'd praised
Her with his poem's name, before he manned
A hired brig south for Greece, sold Bolivar;
And Roberts bought her too. So there they are:

Two boats, one keeper: one whose sail once bore
A poem's name, until the patch was cut;
One named for a Liberator. Somewhere, more
Is to be made of that — a lesson; but
I'll not make it. Which name the lord sailed for,
The poem's or the Liberator's, is not shut,
Nor open, but at sea; and I'll not haul
It in. He went. I've told you. That is all.

I leave him on the bay, a man who kept
The thing he'd made, and sailed her single-handed
Long after those who'd named her, or had stepped
Aboard her, had been burned, or mourned, or landed
At Missolonghi; leave him where he swept
Along the coast, the sheet in hand, and handed
The tiller to no one; and in the sail, above him, there,
The patch of plain new canvas, filling with the air.
