The Department of Architecture assembles the minds that shaped the built environment — from the classical orders of Vitruvius to the Bauhaus revolution, from Piranesi’s imaginary prisons to Soane’s architecture of light. The faculty is organised into four wings: Classical and Renaissance architecture (Vitruvius, Alberti), the Bauhaus school (Gropius, Mies, Breuer, Moholy-Nagy), Engineering and Structure (Hero of Alexandria, Brunel, Buckminster Fuller), and the Visionary Architecture circle around Sir John Soane — including the house-museum at 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields as an object simulacrum, Soane’s draughtsman Joseph Michael Gandy, and the great etcher Giovanni Battista Piranesi.

His mastery of light, mirrors, and spatial surprise created rooms that feel larger than they are and collections that feel infinite.

Soane’s greatest draughtsman — the man who painted buildings as ruins before they were finished. His visionary perspectives of the Bank of England showed it already fallen, already overgrown, already a relic. He died in an asylum in Devon. His renderings outlived every building he drew.

The imaginary architect — Piranesi built more on copper plates than any architect built in stone. The Carceri d’Invenzione (Imaginary Prisons) are impossible structures that obey their own geometry. His Vedute of Rome preserved the ancient city more precisely than any survey. Soane collected his prints as foundational documents of architectural imagination.
