The English word and is the commonest joining word in the language, and it behaves differently from the Amharic ና. Amharic joins nouns with the suffix ና or እና (ዳዊትና ሃና), joins verbs by changing the first verb into a gerund (ሄጄ ገዛሁ) without any separate word for "and", joins clauses with -ም or ደግሞ, and asks "and you?" with -ስ. English uses the one word and for all of these. It must stand between two verbs (✗ I went to the market, bought bread), it must stand once, before the last item, in a list (bread, milk, eggs and sugar), it makes a plural subject (Dawit and Hana are), it puts "I" last (Hana and I), and it is not interchangeable with with (✗ Dawit with Hana are students). It joins things of the same kind: nouns with nouns, adjectives with adjectives, verbs of the same tense with each other. This lesson shows each use and the commonest slips.
