বাঙালি শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য "the" এর ব্যবহার বোঝার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়:
১. "The" হল ইংরেজিতে নির্দিষ্ট Article। বাংলায় এর সরাসরি প্রতিশব্দ নেই, তবে "-টি", "-টা" বা "সেই" এর মাধ্যমে এর অর্থ প্রকাশ করা যায়।
২. "The" এর ব্যবহার নিম্নলিখিত ক্ষেত্রে করা হয়: -
নির্দিষ্ট কোনো বস্তু বা ব্যক্তি বোঝাতে (the book = বইটি) -
প্রাকৃতিক ঘটনা বোঝাতে (the sun, the moon) -
একক বস্তু বোঝাতে (the world = পৃথিবী) -
পূর্বে উল্লিখিত বস্তু বা ব্যক্তি বোঝাতে
৩. "The" এর উচ্চারণ: -
ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণের আগে: /ðə/ (ধ) -
স্বরবর্ণের আগে: /ði/ (ধি)

বাংলা এবং ইংরেজি ভাষায় "the" এর ব্যবহার সাংস্কৃতিক দিক থেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। বাংলায় আমরা প্রায়ই নির্দিষ্ট Article ব্যবহার করি না, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে এটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। উদাহরণস্বরূপ: -
বাংলা: "আমি স্কুলে যাই।" -
ইংরেজি: "I go to the school."
ভারতীয় সংস্কৃতিতে কিছু জিনিস বিশেষ গুরুত্ব বহন করে, যেমন সূর্য, চাঁদ, পৃথিবী। ইংরেজিতে এই সবের জন্য "the" ব্যবহার করা হয় (the Sun, the Moon, the Earth)।

রবার্ট ফ্রস্টের এই কবিতাটি জীবনে নেওয়া সিদ্ধান্তের বিষয়ে। ইংরেজিতে "the" এর ব্যবহার নির্দিষ্ট পথের প্রতি মনোযোগ আকর্ষণ করে। "The road" মানে সেই নির্দিষ্ট পথ যা কবি বেছে নেননি।
