time একটি বিশেষ্য (noun), যার মূল অর্থ «সময়»: ঘণ্টা, মিনিট, দিন, বছর ধরে যা বয়ে চলে। ইংরেজিতে এটি সবচেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহৃত বিশেষ্যগুলোর একটি। বাংলায় আমরা কথাবার্তায় প্রায়ই ইংরেজি শব্দটাই বলি: «টাইম নেই», «টাইমমতো এসো»। কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে time এর ব্যবহার বাংলা «সময়» এর চেয়ে অনেক বেশি বিস্তৃত।
সবচেয়ে বড় পার্থক্য হল: ইংরেজিতে time দুই রকম।
- অগণনীয় (uncountable) time = সময়: I have no time (আমার সময় নেই)। এখানে a বা -s বসে না। - গণনীয় (countable) time = বার, দফা, মুহূর্ত বা যুগ: three times (তিনবার), the first time (প্রথমবার), a good time (ভালো সময়, আনন্দের সময়), in those times (সেকালে)।
বাংলায় এই দুটি অর্থের জন্য আলাদা শব্দ আছে: «সময়» আর «বার»। ইংরেজিতে একটাই শব্দ, time; কোন অর্থ, তা বোঝা যায় a, -s আর সংখ্যা দেখে।
ঘড়ির সময় জিজ্ঞেস করতে ইংরেজিতে বলা হয় What time is it? বাংলায় আমরা বলি «কটা বাজে?», যেখানে «সময়» শব্দটিই নেই। আবার ইংরেজির it এখানে কোনো জিনিসকে বোঝায় না; বাংলায় এর কোনো প্রতিশব্দ নেই, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে এটি বাদ দেওয়া যায় না।

- a বসে না, -s হয় না: I have no time (45.2), How much time do you need? (45.10) - পরিমাণ জানতে how much, how many নয়: ✓ How much time? ✗ How many time? - পরিমাণ বোঝাতে: a lot of time (অনেক সময়), a little time (একটু সময়), enough time (যথেষ্ট সময়), no time (কোনো সময় নেই) - spend time (সময় কাটানো), waste time (সময় নষ্ট করা) (45.11), save time (সময় বাঁচানো) - It takes time to … = …করতে সময় লাগে (45.15)। এখানে বাংলার «লাগে» ইংরেজিতে takes, আর কর্তা হল it।
২. গণনীয় time = বার, উপলক্ষ, অভিজ্ঞতা
- সংখ্যার সঙ্গে: one time, two times, three times (45.8)। তবে one time এর বদলে সাধারণত once (একবার), আর two times এর বদলে প্রায়ই twice (দুবার) বলা হয়। - ক্রম বোঝাতে: the first time (প্রথমবার) (45.7), the last time (শেষবার), the next time (পরের বার) - প্রতিবার: every time, each time; অনেকবার: many times - অভিজ্ঞতা: have a good time (আনন্দে সময় কাটানো) (45.6), have a hard time (কষ্টের মধ্যে পড়া) - সপ্তাহে/মাসে কতবার: three times a week (45.8)। এখানে a মানে «প্রতি»।
৩. ঘড়ির সময়

(45.3)। এর উত্তর: It is five o'clock (পাঁচটা বাজে)। - it এখানে খালি কর্তা (dummy subject): বাংলায় এর কোনো শব্দ নেই, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে বাক্যে কর্তা লাগবেই। It is time to go (45.4), It takes time (45.15) একই রকম। - ঘণ্টার আগে at: at five o'clock, at that time (45.12), at the same time (একই সময়ে)।
৪. time দিয়ে তৈরি বাঁধা বাক্যাংশ
- on time = ঠিক নির্ধারিত সময়ে, দেরি না করে (45.5, 45.9) - in time = সময় থাকতে, দেরি হয়ে যাওয়ার আগে: We arrived in time for dinner (রাতের খাবারের আগেই পৌঁছে গেলাম) - from time to time = মাঝে মাঝে (45.13) - by the time + বাক্য = …এর আগেই, …ততক্ষণে। অতীতে এর সঙ্গে প্রায়ই had + past participle আসে: By the time we reached the station, the train had already left (45.14) - It is time to + ক্রিয়া = …করার সময় হয়েছে (45.4) - for a long time = অনেকক্ষণ ধরে, অনেক দিন ধরে
৫. বাংলা থেকে পার্থক্য
- বাংলায় «সময়» আর «বার» দুটি আলাদা শব্দ; ইংরেজিতে দুটিই time। ভাবুন: «বার» বলতে চাইলে a, -s বা সংখ্যা লাগবে। - বাংলায় «সময়মতো» একটি শব্দ; ইংরেজিতে on time দুটি শব্দ, আর on বাদ দেওয়া যায় না। - বাংলায় «কটা বাজে?» বাক্যে কোনো কর্তা নেই; ইংরেজিতে What time is it? বাক্যে it ও is দুটিই লাগে।

- বর্তমান অভ্যাস: present simple, যেমন She has her tea at the same time every day (45.21)। এখানে has মানে «খান», «আছে» নয়: have tea = চা খাওয়া। - অতীত থেকে এখন পর্যন্ত: present perfect (has/have + past participle), যেমন It has kept good time for more than fifty years (45.17)। বাংলায় «চলে আসছে», অর্থাৎ কাজটি এখনো চলছে। - শেষ হয়ে যাওয়া অতীত: past simple, যেমন my grandfather bought it (45.26)। সঙ্গে ago: A long time ago = অনেক দিন আগে। ago সবসময় সময়ের পরে বসে, আগে নয়।
৪. বিশেষ শব্দ
- grandmother's = দিদিমার। 's দিয়ে সম্বন্ধ বোঝানো হয়, বাংলার «-র/-এর» এর মতো। - pitha (পিঠা) আর jaggery (গুড়) দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার জিনিস; ইংরেজিতে লেখার সময় pitha শব্দটি বাংলা থেকেই নেওয়া হয়, আর jaggery শব্দটি ইংরেজি অভিধানে আছে। - time stands still = সময় থেমে আছে, স্থির হয়ে আছে। still এখানে «স্থির», আর 45.29 এর still মানে «এখনো»: একই বানান, দুটি আলাদা অর্থ।

- time – [taɪm]: বাংলায় প্রায় «টাইম»। দুটি বিষয় খেয়াল করুন: - ইংরেজি t দন্তমূলীয় (alveolar): জিভের ডগা দাঁতের পেছনের মাড়িতে লাগে। তাই এটি বাংলা «ত» নয়, «ট» এর কাছাকাছি। শব্দের শুরুতে, জোর পড়া অক্ষরে, ইংরেজি t এর পরে একটু বাতাস বেরোয় [tʰ], অর্থাৎ «ট» আর «ঠ» এর মাঝামাঝি। - [aɪ] একটি যুক্তস্বর (diphthong): «আ» থেকে শুরু করে «ই» এর দিকে সরে যায়, যেমন বাংলা «আই»। দুটিকে আলাদা অক্ষর করবেন না: «টা-ইম» নয়, «টাইম»। - times – [taɪmz]: শেষের s এখানে [z] এর মতো বাজে। বাংলায় z ধ্বনি নেই, তাই অনেকে «জ» বলেন; ঠোঁট না মিলিয়ে, জিভ মাড়ির কাছে রেখে মৌমাছির গুঞ্জনের মতো zzz বলুন। - sometimes – [ˈsʌm.taɪmz]: জোর প্রথম অংশে, SOME-times। - on time – [ɒn ˈtaɪm] (ব্রিটিশ), [ɑːn ˈtaɪm] (আমেরিকান): জোর time এর উপর। - thyme (এক রকম সুগন্ধি পাতা) – [taɪm]: বানান আলাদা হলেও উচ্চারণ time এর মতোই; h উচ্চারিত হয় না। - What time is it? – [wɒt ˈtaɪm ɪz ɪt]: প্রশ্নটি what দিয়ে শুরু, তাই শেষে স্বর নামে, ওঠে না।
