ગુજરાતી ભાષકો માટે "the"નો ઉપયોગ સમજવા માટે મહત્વપૂર્ણ મુદ્દાઓ: -
"The" એ અંગ્રેજીમાં નિશ્ચિત લેખ (Definite Article) છે. ગુજરાતીમાં તેનો સીધો સમકક્ષ શબ્દ નથી. -
"The"નો ઉપયોગ નીચેના સમયે થાય છે: -
ચોક્કસ વસ્તુ કે વ્યક્તિ દર્શાવવા માટે (the book = તે પુસ્તક) -
કુદરતી ઘટનાઓ માટે (the sun, the moon) -
એકમાત્ર વસ્તુઓ માટે (the world = વિશ્વ) -
અગાઉ ઉલ્લેખ કરેલી વસ્તુઓ માટે -
ગુજરાતીમાં આપણે "તે" વાપરીએ છીએ, પણ અંગ્રેજીમાં "the" લિંગભેદ દર્શાવતું નથી. -
"The"નું ઉચ્ચારણ: -

સ્વર પહેલાં: /ði/

ગુજરાતી અને અંગ્રેજી ભાષાઓમાં "the"નો ઉપયોગ સાંસ્કૃતિક દૃષ્ટિએ મહત્વપૂર્ણ છે. ગુજરાતીમાં આપણે ઘણી વખત નિશ્ચિત લેખ વાપરતા નથી, પણ અંગ્રેજીમાં તે અત્યંત મહત્વપૂર્ણ છે. ઉદાહરણ તરીકે: -
ગુજરાતી: "હું શાળામાં જાઉં છું." -
અંગ્રેજી: "I go to the school."
ભારતીય સંસ્કૃતિમાં કેટલીક વસ્તુઓને વિશેષ મહત્વ આપવામાં આવે છે, જેમ કે સૂર્ય, ચંદ્ર, પૃથ્વી. અંગ્રેજીમાં આ બધા માટે "the" વપરાય છે (the Sun, the Moon, the Earth).

"The Road Not Taken" - ન લીધેલો રસ્તો "Two roads diverged in the yellow wood" - પીળા જંગલમાં બે રસ્તા વિભાજિત થયા
રોબર્ટ ફ્રોસ્ટની આ કવિતા જીવનમાં લેવાતા નિર્ણયો વિશે છે. અંગ્રેજીમાં "the"નો ઉપયોગ ચોક્કસ રસ્તા તરફ ધ્યાન દોરે છે. "The road" એટલે તે ચોક્કસ રસ્તો જે કવિએ પસંદ કર્યો નથી.
કવિતામાં "the"નો ઉપયોગ: -

"The yellow wood" - તે ચોક્કસ પીળું જંગલ બંને જગ્યાએ "the" વિશિષ્ટતા દર્શાવે છે.
