"say" は、英語の基本の動詞で、ことばを口に出して言う、またはことばで伝えることを表します。日本語の「言う」にいちばん近い語です。Lesson 24 の they で、They say it will rain.(雨が降るそうだ)という言い方を見ました。この say が、その動詞です。この課では、say そのものの使い方を、くわしく見ていきます。
日本語の「言う」は、「と」を使って、言ったことばを前に置きます:「疲れた」と言った。英語は、say を先に置き、言ったことばをあとに続けます:He said, "I am tired." / He said that he was tired.(彼は、疲れていると言った)。語順が反対です。
この課では、say の次の六つの働きを見分けます。
1. ことばをそのまま言う say:He said, "I am tired." / "I am hungry," he said. 日本語の「〜と言った」に当たります。引用符(" ")を使います。 2. 内容を伝える say:My mother says that it is cold. / Kenta says that he likes Vancouver. 日本語の「〜と言っている」に当たります。that の節 (Lesson 22) が続きます。 3. ことばやあいさつを言う say:say yes、say hello、say thank you、say sorry、say a few words。日本語の「(はい)と言う」「あいさつをする」「お礼を言う」「ひとこと言う」に当たります。 4. 書いてあるものを指す say:The sign says "Closed." / What does the letter say? 人ではなく、札、手紙、本、時計が主語になります。日本語の「〜と書いてある」に当たります。 5. 「英語で何と言いますか」の say:How do you say "arigato" in English? 日本語の「〜は英語で何と言いますか」に当たります。英語の授業で、いちばんよく使う質問の一つです。 6. 意見や、考えを言う say:I would say it is about ten minutes.(十分ぐらいだと思います)/ What can I say?(なんと言ったらいいか)/ If you do not understand, say so.(わからなければ、そう言ってください)。
say の形を、まとめて見てみましょう:
- say /seɪ/:原形。I say / you say / we say / they say - says /sɛz/:he / she / it のときの形(三人称単数現在)。つづりは says ですが、/seɪz/ ではなく、/sɛz/ と発音します - said /sɛd/:過去形、過去分詞。つづりは said ですが、/seɪd/ ではなく、/sɛd/ と発音します(bed、red と同じ母音) - saying /ˈseɪɪŋ/:進行形(be + saying)。What is he saying?
まず、日本語との違いから見てみましょう。日本語は、「言う」「話す」「しゃべる」「伝える」「述べる」と、いくつもの動詞を使い分けます。英語は、次の四つの動詞を使い分けます:
- say:言ったことば、または内容に注目します。He said that he was tired. / What did you say? - tell:伝える相手に注目します。人が必ず付きます。He told me that he was tired. 「〜に言う・教える」に当たります。 - speak:声を出すこと、言語、あらたまった話に使います。She speaks Japanese. / He spoke at the meeting. - talk:会話をすることです。たいてい、to や with が付きます。I talked to my host mother.
say と tell の違いは、とても大切です。say のあとには、人を直接置きません。言う相手を示すときは、to を使います:He said to me, "I am tired." 人を直接置くのは tell です:He told me that he was tired. × He said me that he was tired.
動詞の形にも気をつけましょう。he / she / it のときの says は、-s が付きます (Lesson 16):She says so. ほかの人には付きません:I say / they say。疑問文と否定文は do + 原形です (Lesson 15):What did you say? / He did not say a word.(× He did not said.)過去形の said は、すべての人称で同じです:I said / he said / they said。
語源:say は、古い英語の secgan から来た、とても古い語です。ドイツ語の sagen、オランダ語の zeggen と、同じ起源の語です。says /sɛz/ は、do → does /dʌz/、have → has /hæz/ と並ぶ、三人称単数現在の不規則な形です。つづりのとおりには発音しない形なので、そのまま覚えましょう。
要点 (Key Takeaways):
- say は「ことばを言う」:言ったことばや内容に注目する動詞。人には tell を使う:He said that he was tired. / He told me that he was tired. - 形は四つ:say、says、said、saying。三人称単数現在の says は /sɛz/、過去形の said は /sɛd/。つづりのとおりには発音しない - 動詞の形:I say / she says / they say。過去は、すべて said。× She say hello. × She sayed hello. - 疑問文と否定文は do + 原形:Do you say it? / He does not say it. / What did you say?(× What did you said? × He does not says.) - そのまま言うときは、引用符を使う:He said, "I am tired." / "I am tired," he said. - 内容を言うときは、that の節を使う:She said that she was tired.(Lesson 22。that は省くこともできる)。過去の say のあとは、節の中の動詞も過去の形になる - 人に向けて言うときは、say to:He said to me, "..."(× He said me) - 書いてあるものも say で表す:The sign says "Closed." / What does the letter say? - 「英語で何と言いますか」:How do you say "arigato" in English? - ひとまとまりの言い方:say hello、say goodbye、say thank you、say sorry、say a few words、say so、have nothing to say - 発音:say は /seɪ/、says は /sɛz/、said は /sɛd/。sad /sæd/(悲しい)と said /sɛd/ を、聞き分けましょう

動詞 "say" の使い方に関する文法の規則は次のとおりです。
1. say の四つの形と、発音
say には、四つの形があります。つづりと発音がずれる形が、二つあります:
- say /seɪ/:原形。I say yes. (25.1)、We say thank you. (25.5)、How do you say "arigato" in English? (25.10) - says /sɛz/:he / she / it のときの形。He says no. (25.2)、My mother says that it is cold. (25.7)、The sign ... says "Closed." (25.9)。つづりは days や pays と似ていますが、発音は違います:says /sɛz/、days /deɪz/ - said /sɛd/:過去形と過去分詞。She said hello. (25.3)、Anna said to me ... (25.11)。つづりは paid に似ていますが、発音は /sɛd/ です:said /sɛd/、paid /peɪd/ - saying /ˈseɪɪŋ/:進行形。What is he saying? (25.6)。-ing は、そのまま付きます(× sayying)
2. 現在形:三人称単数の -s、do + 原形
現在形では、he / she / it のときだけ、-s を付けます (Lesson 16):
- he says (25.2)、my mother says (25.7)、Kenta says (25.13)、the sign says (25.9)。I / you / we / they のときは、say です:I say (25.1)、we say (25.5) - 疑問文と否定文は、do / does + 原形です (Lesson 15):How do you say "arigato" in English? (25.10)。Does he say yes? / He does not say yes.(× He does not says yes. × Does he says yes?) - 進行形:What is he saying? (25.6)。今、まさに言っていることを聞くときの形です。What does he say? は、「彼は(ふだん、または、その手紙などで)何と言っていますか」という聞き方です - 短い答え:Do you say it? — Yes, I do. / No, I do not.(Lesson 15)
3. 過去形 said:全人称で同じ形
- 過去形は、すべての人称で said です:I said / you said / he said / they said。三人称でも、-s は付きません:She said hello. (25.3)。× She sayed. × She says hello yesterday. - 疑問文と否定文は did + 原形です:What did you say? (25.4)、He did not say a word. (25.8)。did のあとは原形の say です(× What did you said? × He did not said a word.) - 現在完了では、have / has + said です:I have said it twice.(私は、二度言いました)。said が、過去分詞の形です - 過去形の said は、いつ言ったか(過去)を表します。今も言っているなら、現在形です:My mother says that it is cold. (25.7)。「今朝、そう言った」なら、My mother said that it was cold.
4. say のあとに来るもの
say のあとには、次のものが来ます:
- 引用(言ったことばそのまま):She said, "I am tired." (25.11) - that の節(言った内容):My mother says that it is cold. (25.7)、Kenta says that he likes Vancouver (25.13)、My teacher said that I should say more (25.14) - 名詞(ことば、あいさつ):I say yes. (25.1)、She said hello. (25.3)、He did not say a word. (25.8) - 疑問詞 + 節:What did you say? (25.4)。疑問詞が、say の目的語になります - so、it、something:say so (25.15)、say it、say something。do のように、前に出た内容を受けます - 人を言うときは、to:Anna said to me ... (25.11)。人は、say の直後には来ません(× Anna said me.)。人を直接置きたいときは、tell を使います:Anna told me that she was tired.
5. 引用の書き方:引用符、コンマ、語順
そのまま言うときは、引用符を付けます。日本語の「 」に当たります:
- 引用が前:"I am hungry," he said, "but I do not have any money." (25.12)。引用の最後にコンマを付けて、引用符を閉じます。日本語の「おなかがすいた」と彼は言った、と、語順が似ています - 引用が後:Anna said to me, "I am tired." (25.11)。say のあとに、コンマを付けます - 引用を二つに分ける:"I am hungry," he said, "but I do not have any money." (25.12)。said の前後に、コンマを付けます。引用の続きは、小文字で始めます(but) - 語順は、he said が、ふつうです。名詞が主語のときは、said Anna のように、動詞を前に置くこともあります(小説などで見られます)。he said の代わりに said he とは、ふつう言いません - 日本語の「と」は、英語では、引用符とコンマと say に分かれます。日本語の「と」を、英語の to に置きかえて、× He said to "I am tired." のように言わないようにしましょう
6. say と tell、speak、talk の使い分け
次の四つは、日本語では、すべて「言う・話す」に訳せます。英語では、後ろに続く形が違います:
- say:言ったことば、または内容。人は、to で言います:He said that he was tired. / He said to me, "I am tired." - tell:言う相手を、直接置きます:He told me that he was tired. / Tell them that the test is on Monday. (Lesson 24)。× He told that he was tired. × He told to me. - speak:言語、声、あらたまった話:She speaks Japanese. / He spoke at the meeting. × She says Japanese. - talk:会話。to や with と使います:I want to talk to them. (Lesson 24) - 決まった組み合わせがあります:say hello、say goodbye、say yes、say no、say thank you、say sorry、say a prayer(祈る)、say a word。tell the truth(本当のことを言う)、tell a lie(うそをつく)、tell a story(話をする)、tell the time(時間を言う)。× say a lie、× tell hello、× say the truth
7. 内容を伝える say:that の節、時制、代名詞
that の節 (Lesson 22) の使い方は、これまでと同じです。ここでは、日本語との大きな違いに気をつけましょう:
- say が現在形なら、節の中も、現在形です:My mother says that it is cold. (25.7)、Kenta says that he likes Vancouver (25.13) - say が過去形なら、節の中の動詞も、過去の形になります (Lesson 22 の規則 8、Lesson 24 の規則 8):My teacher said that I should say more (25.14)。「疲れている」と言った → He said that he was tired.(今も疲れていることをとくに言いたいときは、He said that he is tired. とも言えますが、ふつうは was です) - 日本語は、「疲れていると言った」のように、節の中が現在形のままです。英語は、過去にそう言ったので、節の中も過去の形です。日本語のとおりに、現在形のまま言わないようにしましょう - 代名詞も変わります。「私は疲れている」と言った(Anna が言った)→ Anna said that she was tired.(× Anna said that I was tired.)。引用では、そのまま言います:Anna said, "I am tired." (25.11) - that は、省くこともできます:She said (that) she was tired. 話しことばでは、よく省きます。ただし、25.7、25.13、25.14 のように、その文が長いときは、that があると読みやすくなります - 「彼は〜と言っていた」は、He said ... です。He was saying ... は、「そのとき、言っていた最中」の意味です
8. 書いてあるものを指す say
人ではなく、札、手紙、本、時計、天気予報なども、say の主語になります。日本語の「〜と書いてある」「〜と出ている」に当たります:
- The sign on the door says "Closed." (25.9) =「ドアの札には『閉店』と書いてあります」 - What does the letter say? =「手紙には、何と書いてありますか」 - The clock says ten. =「時計は十時を指しています」 - 主語が三人称単数なので、says です:The sign says (× The sign say)。複数の主語なら、say です:The signs say "Closed." - 前の課の They say ... (Lesson 24) と、よく似た使い方です:People say / They say / The sign says。だれ(何)が言うのかを、はっきり言うときは、The weather service says ... のように、情報の出どころを主語にします - 受け身の形もあります:It is said that ... / He is said to be ...(〜と言われている)。書きことばや、あらたまった文章に見られます
9. 「英語で何と言いますか」
外国語の学習者に、とても大切な言い方です:
- How do you say "arigato" in English? (25.10) =「『ありがとう』は、英語で何と言いますか」。答え:You say "thank you." - 「〜は、英語で何ですか」は、What is "〜" in English? とも言えます。意味は同じですが、How do you say ...? のほうが、よく聞かれます - 意味を聞くときは、say ではなく mean を使います:What does "arigato" mean?(「ありがとう」は、どういう意味ですか) - 聞き返すとき:Could you say that again, please?(もう一度言っていただけますか)/ Could you say that more slowly?(もう少しゆっくり言っていただけますか)。What? だけだと、ぶっきらぼうに聞こえます。Sorry? / Pardon? が、ていねいです - 言語の名前は、in のあとに置きます:How do you say it in Japanese?(それは日本語でどう言いますか)。言語を話せるかどうかを聞くときは、say ではなく speak です:Do you speak English?(× Do you say English?)
10. ひとまとまりの言い方
say には、よく使う決まった言い方があります。ここで、まとめて覚えましょう:
- say hello / goodbye / thank you / sorry / yes / no:あいさつや、短いことば。25.1、25.3、25.5、25.23 - say a few words / say a word:ひとこと言う。He did not say a word. (25.8)。Please say a few words. (25.27)。a word は、ふつう否定文で、「ひとことも〜ない」の意味で使います - say something / nothing:何か言う/何も言わない。I have nothing to say. / Do you want to say something? - say so:そう言う。If you do not understand, say so. (25.15)。I think so / I hope so と、同じ so です - I would say ...:〜だと思います。やわらかい言い方です:I would say it is about ten minutes.(25.28)。きっぱり言わずに、自分の考えとして言うときに使います - What can I say?:(言うことばがない)なんと言ったらいいか。25.30。ほめるときにも、あきれるときにも使います - have nothing (more) to say:言うことは何もない。25.27、25.30。疑問詞 + to 不定詞(what to say、how to say)も、よく使います:I do not know what to say. (Lesson 12 の to) - say hello to ...:〜によろしく。Say hello to your mother.(お母さんによろしくね) - Let's say ...:たとえば〜としましょう。Let's say you have ten dollars.(たとえば十ドルあるとします) - You don't say!:まさか!(おどろいたときの、くだけた言い方) - Say cheese!:「はい、チーズ」。写真を撮るときの決まり文句です
11. say と to 不定詞、wh- の疑問詞
- to 不定詞:I do not know what to say.(何を言ったらいいかわからない)。what to say、how to say、when to say、who to say it to - 主語のときも、目的語のときも使います:It is hard to say.(言うのはむずかしい)/ I have nothing to say. - 疑問詞が節の先頭に来る形:Just say what you said to us at lunch. (25.19)。what は、「〜したこと」(関係代名詞)という意味です - should のあとは原形:I should say more. (25.14)。× I should to say more. × I should says more.
よくある間違い (Common Mistakes):
- She say hello. → She says hello. - He does not says yes. → He does not say yes. - What did you said? → What did you say? - She sayed hello. → She said hello. - Anna said me that she was tired. → Anna said to me that she was tired. / Anna told me that she was tired. - He told that he was tired. → He said that he was tired. / He told me that he was tired. - He said to "I am tired." → He said, "I am tired." - She said that I am tired.(Anna が、自分のことを言ったとき)→ She said that she was tired. - He said that he is tired.(過去に言ったとき)→ He said that he was tired. - She says Japanese. → She speaks Japanese. - Do you say English? → Do you speak English? - He said a lie. → He told a lie. - Say me the truth. → Tell me the truth. - The sign say "Closed." → The sign says "Closed." - He sad hello. → He said hello.(said /sɛd/ と sad /sæd/ は、別の語です) - I do not said a word. → I did not say a word.

動詞 "say" を使う場面に見られる、日本語と英語の習慣の違い:
- 日本語の「すみません」は、お礼にも、おわびにも、人を呼ぶときにも使います。英語は、場面で言い分けます:人に助けてもらったときは Thank you、おわびは I am sorry、人を呼ぶときや、通りぬけるときは Excuse me です。「すみません」を、いつでも sorry と言うと、相手は、「何か悪いことをしたのかな」と思うことがあります。25.23 のルーカスのように、You do not have to say sorry.(あやまらなくていいよ)と言われたら、何も悪いことをしていないのに、あやまったときです。そのときは、Thank you と言いましょう - カナダの人は、よく sorry と言うと、冗談まじりに言われます。人にぶつかったときも、相手がぶつかってきたときも、Sorry! と言うことがあります。バンクーバーでも、あいさつがわりに Sorry! と言う人を、よく見かけます - 英語の授業では、わからないことを、そのままにしないで、say so(わからないと言う)ことが、大切にされています。先生は、25.15 のように、If you do not understand, say so.(わからなければ、そう言ってください)と言います。日本語では、わからなくても、だまっていることがありますが、英語の授業では、だまっていると、「わかった」と思われることがあります。Could you say that again? / Could you say that more slowly? は、失礼な質問ではありません。ていねいな、ふつうの質問です - 「〜は英語で何と言いますか」は、英語の教室で、とてもよく使う質問です:How do you say "arigato" in English? (25.10)。単語だけを言っても、通じます。How do you say ... ? のあとに、日本語のことばをそのまま入れてもかまいません。ホストファミリーにも、気軽に聞きましょう:How do you say this in English?(これは、英語で何と言いますか) - 日本語の「〜によろしくお伝えください」は、英語の Say hello to ... に近い言い方です。Say hello to your parents for me.(ご両親によろしく)。tell より say を使うのが、ふつうです。Please give my regards to ... は、あらたまった言い方です - 日本語は、「〜と言っていた」と、人のことばを、そのままの形で伝えることができます。英語の He said ... Some say the world will end in fire,(世界は火で終わると言う人もいる)は、英語圏の人が、よく引用する一行です。Lesson 24 の They say ... と同じように、「だれが言っているのか」は、はっきりしません。Some say ...

この九行に、say が三回現れます:Some say(一行目)、Some say(二行目)、to say(七行目)。
本文は、1923年の詩集 New Hampshire の本文(Wikisource)と、ほかのオンライン版(Wikipedia の掲載、American Literature、Poetry Database)で確認しました。それらは、すべて、七行目が To say that for destruction ice です。ただし、poets.org の版だけは、同じ行が To know that for destruction ice となっていました。1923年の本文は say ですので、この課では、say の形を使います。句読点も、1923年の本文によります。
Some 一部の人は say 言う the (—) world 世界は will (未来) end 終わる in (で) fire 火で, Some 一部の人は say 言う in (で) ice 氷で. From (から) what (〜こと) I 私が've (= have) 〜した tasted 味わった of (の) desire 欲望, I 私は hold 与する with (と) those 人々 who (関係詞) favor 支持する fire 火を. But しかし if もし it それが had (過去) to (〜しなければ) perish 滅びる twice 二度, I 私は think 思う I 私は know 知っている enough 十分に of (について) hate 憎しみ To (不定詞) say 言う that (接続詞) for (にとって) destruction 破壊 ice 氷は Is である also も great すごい And そして would (仮定) suffice 足りる.
Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.
Lesson 24 の They say ... と、よく似た使い方で、だれが言っているのか、決まっていません。Some は複数の人たちを指す語なので、動詞は says ではなく、say です(規則 2)。二行目は、Some say in ice. です。ここでは、同じことばの繰り返しを避けて、the world will end が省かれています。「世界は、氷で終わる」と言う人もいる、という意味です。同じ形の繰り返しが、言い争いをしている二つのグループを、並べて見せています。
一行目の say のあとには、that が省かれています:Some say [that] the world will end in fire. 規則 7 のとおり、that は、話しことばや詩では、省けます。話し手は、七行目で、もう一度 say を使いますが、そこでは that を省かずに、To say that for destruction ice is also great と書いています。この that があるおかげで、「破壊には、氷もまた〜だ」という内容が、はっきり、ひとまとまりの節になります。say のあとの that の節は、「〜と言う」の中身です (Lesson 22)。
七行目の to say は、不定詞です。I think I know enough of hate to say that ... =「私は、〜と言えるだけ、十分に憎しみを知っていると思う」。enough ... to ...
I hold with those who favor fire は、「私は、火を支持する人たちの側に立つ」という意味で、hold with は、「〜に賛成する」という意味の、少し古風な言い方です。favor は、アメリカ式のつづりです(イギリス式は favour)。五行目の had to perish は、have to の過去形で、「滅びなければならない」です。But if it had to perish twice, は、事実とは反対の、ありえないことを考える言い方です。「もし二度滅びるなら」という仮定の話です。六行目の I think I know には、that がありません。
- Some say the world will end in fire:Some = 一部の人(複数)。say = 現在形(Some は複数なので、says ではない)。the world will end in fire = 世界は火で終わるだろう。that が省かれている (規則 7)。in fire = 火で、火の中で。will end = 未来の形 (Lesson 11 の will) - Some say in ice:Some say [the world will end] in ice。繰り返しになる部分が、省かれている - From what I've tasted of desire:From = 〜から判断すると。what = 〜こと(関係代名詞)。I've tasted = I have tasted。現在完了。of desire = 欲望について(のこと) - I hold with those who favor fire:hold with = 〜に賛成する、〜の側に立つ。those who = 〜する人たち。who = 関係詞(those を説明)。favor = 好む、支持する。ここでは、those が複数なので、favor に -s が付かない(規則 2) - But if it had to perish twice:if = もし。it = the world。had to = have to の過去形(〜しなければならなかった)。perish = 滅びる。twice = 二度 - I think I know enough of hate:I think = 私は思う(that が省かれている)。I know = 私は知っている。enough of hate = 憎しみについて、十分に - To say that for destruction ice Is also great:To say that = 〜と言うのに(enough ... to ... の to)。say = 言う(不定詞なので、原形)。that = 接続詞(Lesson 22)。for destruction = 破壊にとっては(Lesson 14 の for)。ice is also great = 氷もまた、すごい(強力)。also = も。great = すごい - And would suffice:And [ice] would suffice = そして、氷でも、十分だろう。would = 仮定の形(もし二度滅びるなら)。suffice = 足りる、十分である。主語の ice は、前の行から続いている

この会話では、動詞 "say" が次のように使われています。それぞれの say が、だれが、何を言うことなのかも、確かめましょう:
- 未来の say:Today each of you will say a few words about the weekend. (25.16)。will(〜するでしょう)のあとは原形の say です(× will says)。a few words = ひとこと、少しのことば(規則 10)。I will say it slowly. (25.20) も同じ形です - 三人称単数の says:Your host mother says that your English is very good. (25.17)。host mother は一人なので says です(規則 2)。ここでは、ホストのお母さんが言っていることを、that の節で伝えています(規則 4、7)。My father says that he will talk to the neighbours tomorrow. (25.26) も同じです。話している今も、そう言っているので、現在形で、節の中も will です - say so:She says so every day. (25.18)。so = 「あなたの英語は、とても上手だ」と言うこと。前に出た内容を、so で受けています(規則 4、10)。日本語の「そう言う」です。× She says it so. - 疑問詞 + to 不定詞:I do not know what to say. (25.18)。「何を言ったらいいか」(規則 11)。what が、say の目的語になっています。I do not know の do not は、現在形の否定です (Lesson 15) - 関係代名詞の what:Just say what you said to us at lunch. (25.19)。what you said = あなたが言ったこと。最初の say は、命令形(原形)。二つ目の said は、過去形です。同じ語が二回あっても、形が違います(規則 3、11)。said /sɛd/ の発音に気をつけましょう(発音ガイド) - 命令形:Just say ... (25.19)、Please say the last word again. (25.21)、Please say a few words. (25.27)。命令は、主語を言わずに、原形で始めます。please を付けると、ていねいになります - 過去進行形:I was saying it too quietly. (25.22)。was + saying。「そのとき、言っていた」ことです。過去形の said ではなく、「言っていた最中」「声が小さかった状態」を表します(規則 1) - say sorry:You do not have to say sorry. (25.23)。do not have to = 〜する必要はない(Lesson 11 の have、Lesson 20 の not)。say sorry = 「すみません」と言う。ここは、ことばを言うことです(規則 10)。Section E も見てください - 一般的に言う says:My mother always says that the first speech is the hardest. (25.24)。always は、says の前に来ます。いつも言っていることなので、現在形です。節の中は、現在形の is です(今もそうだと言っているから) - can + say:What can you say about your weekend? (25.25)。can のあとは原形の say です(× can says)。疑問文は、can + 主語 + say の順です。I can say one thing (25.26) も、同じ形です - have nothing to say:I hope the dog has nothing to say tonight. (25.27)。have nothing to say = 言うことが何もない。ここでは、犬が「吠えない」ことを、冗談で言っています(規則 10)。hope のあとの that は、省かれています(規則 7)。The dog は一匹なので、has です(Lesson 11 の have、Lesson 16 の規則) - I would say:I would say that my weekend was perfect. (25.28)。would say = 〜だと思います。やわらかい言い方で、自分の意見を言うときに使います(規則 10)。that の節の中は、過去の形 (was) です。週末は、すでに終わっているからです - 過去の said:everyone said it was good. (25.28)。said のあとの節は、過去の形 (was) です(規則 7)。that が省かれています。Anna, you said that everyone liked it (25.29)。liked も、過去の形です - did not say:Lucas did not say a word about it! (25.29)。did not のあとは、原形の say です(× did not said)。a word は、否定文の中で、「ひとことも〜ない」の意味です(規則 3、10) - What can I say?:(25.30)。「なんと言ったらいいか」。ここでは、言うことばがないほど、ケーキがおいしかった、という意味です(規則 10)。「私に、何と言えるだろう」という、そのままの意味でも使えます - so ... that:It was so good that I have nothing more to say. (25.30)。so good that = とても〜なので…。
/eɪ/ は、day、play、they (Lesson 24)、rain と同じ音です。
- said /sɛd/ と sad /sæd/:said は /ɛ/(エ)、sad は /æ/(口を大きく開けた「ア」と「エ」の間の音)です。「セッド」と「サッド」の違いです。He said hello.(彼は「こんにちは」と言った)と、He is sad.(彼は悲しい)は、別の意味です。 - says /sɛz/ と seize /siz/:says は /ɛ/、seize(つかむ)は /i/ です。 - say /seɪ/ と she /ʃi/:say は /s/ で始まり、she は /ʃ/ で始まります。/s/ は舌と歯ぐきの間のせまい隙間から出す音、/ʃ/ は、くちびるを丸めて、舌を少し後ろに引いた音です。She says. /ʃi ˈsɛz/ は、/ʃ/ と /s/ が近くに並びます。ゆっくり、区別して言う練習をしましょう。
強い形と弱い形:
- 文の中の say は、内容を表す語なので、強く言います。What did you say? /wʌt dɪd ju ˈseɪ/。文の最後の say が、いちばん強い音です。 - 話しことばでは、did you が、つながって /dɪdʒə/ になります:What did you say? /wʌ dɪdʒə ˈseɪ/。「ディドゥ ユー」ではなく、「ディジャ」のように聞こえます。 - How do you say ...? /haʊ də ju ˈseɪ/:do you は、弱く、短く言います。「ドゥ ユー」と、はっきり言わなくてかまいません。 - He said it. /hi ˈsɛd ɪt/:said の /d/ と it の母音が、つながります。「セディット」のように聞こえます。 - She said that ... /ʃi ˈsɛd ðət/:said の /d/ と that /ðət/ の間に、母音を入れません。that は弱く、/ðət/ と言います(Lesson 22)。 - They say ... /ðeɪ ˈseɪ/:Lesson 24 の they は軽く、say を強く言います。
つなげて言う練習:
- Kenta says that he likes Vancouver. /ˈkɛntə ˈsɛz ðət hi ˈlaɪks væŋˈkuvər/:says、likes、Vancouver を強く言います。that、he は弱く、短く言います。 - The sign says "Closed." /ðə ˈsaɪn ˈsɛz ˈkloʊzd/:sign と says と Closed を、はっきり言います。 - I do not know what to say. /aɪ ˈdoʊ ˈnɑt ˈnoʊ wət tə ˈseɪ/:what と to は弱く、say は強く言います。
自分で練習してみましょう:「ひとことも言いませんでした」。He did not say a word. /hi dɪd ˈnɑt ˈseɪ ə ˈwɜrd/ — say /seɪ/ と said /sɛd/ を、くり返し、確かめましょう。
