しかも、he と she と it の区別がありません。
1. 主語の they:They are students. / They live here. 2. 目的語の them:I know them. / Tell them. / with them。 3. 所有の their / theirs:their house(彼らの家)、The books are theirs.(その本は彼らのものです)。 4. 再帰の themselves:They made it by themselves.(自分たちだけで作った)。 5. ひとりを指す they:Somebody called, and they left a message.(だれかが電話をかけてきて、メッセージを残した)。 6. 世間の人々を指す they:They say it will rain.(雨が降るそうだ)。
この課では、ほかに、短縮形の they're / they've / they'll / they'd、there・their・they're の区別、間接話法の They said that they would come.(来ると言った)も登場します。
They are my friends. I know them. - their /ðɛr/:所有格(〜の)。 The books are theirs. They did it themselves. - they're /ðɛr/:they are の短縮形。They're tall. - they've /ðeɪv/:they have。they'll /ðeɪl/:they will。they'd /ðeɪd/:they would または they had。
× Big, but gentle. They live in Osaka. / The cows are big, but they are gentle.
These books are old. They are not mine.(本が一冊のときは、It is not mine.
be は are / were、have は have になります:They are / They have / They live。Lesson 16 の He lives / He has と比べましょう。 (Lesson 15):Do they live here? / They don't live here.(× They doesn't live here.)
(Key Takeaways):
They are students. / The cows are big, but they are gentle. → They live in Osaka. - they の形は五つ:they(〜は)、them(〜を・〜に)、their(〜の)、theirs(〜のもの)、themselves(〜自身) - 動詞は複数の形で、-s は付かない:They are / They have / They live。× They lives. / × They is. Do they live here? / They don't live here.(Lesson 15)。 Yes, they do. / No, they don't. - 動詞や前置詞のあとは them:I know them. / with them / for them。× I know they. × with they(Lesson 14 の for) - there と their と they're は同じ発音で、意味が違う:there(そこに)、their(彼らの)、they're(= they are) - 名前と they を重ねない:× My parents they live in Osaka. → My parents live in Osaka. / They live in Osaka. Somebody called, and they left a message. 動詞は複数の形:they were / they are - 世間の人々を指す they:They say it will rain.

he / she / it の区別はありません:
They are students. (24.1)、They live in Vancouver. (24.4)、Anna and Lucas do not have a car, so they take the bus. The cows are big, but they are gentle. These books are not mine; they are theirs. (24.9) - 男女まじり:Anna and Lucas(女の人と男の人)→ they (24.8) - 一つのものは it、二つ以上は they:The book is old. It is not mine. / These books are old. They are not mine. The police are here. They are at the door. 英語は、複数なら the cows ... they と、はっきり言います - 名前と they を重ねません:× My parents they live in Osaka. → My parents live in Osaka. / They live in Osaka.(Lesson 16 の規則と同じ考え方です)
be は are / were になります:
- be:They are students. (24.1)、Where are they? (24.5)、they were looking for their teacher (24.15)。× They is. × They am. They live in Vancouver. (24.4)、they take the bus (24.8)、they say (24.11)。× They lives. × They takes. - have:they have。× They has.(Lesson 11 の have。he / she / it のときだけ has です) - 疑問文と否定文:Do they live here? / They do not (don't) live here. Do they live here? — Yes, they do. / No, they don't.(Lesson 15 の do)。Are they students? — Yes, they are. - 過去形は、人称で変わりません:they made (24.10)、they left (24.12)、they forgot (24.13)、they told me (24.15)。was は、they のときは were になります:they were looking (24.15)
- they(〜は・〜が):文の主語になります。They are students. (24.1)、they left a message (24.12) - them(〜を・〜に・〜と):動詞や前置詞のあとに来ます。I know them. (24.2)、he calls them (24.7)、tell them (24.14)。× I know they. × I know their. - their(〜の):名詞の前に来ます。Their house is big. (24.3)、their test (24.14)、their teacher (24.15)。× They house is big. - theirs(〜のもの):名詞のあとに何も来ません。These books are theirs. (24.9)。× These books are their. - themselves(〜自身):主語と同じ人たちを指します。 × theirselves(この形はありません)。ひとりのときの themself もありますが、まだあまり使われません:ふつうは themselves を使います - 前置詞のあとは them:with them / for them / to them。 主語と同じ人たちのときは themselves です:They saw them.(ほかの人たちを見た)/ They saw themselves.(自分たちを見た) - Lesson 16 の he の形(he / him / his / himself)と比べましょう。同じ並びです:he - him - his - himself、they - them - their - themselves
4. they're / their / there、短縮形
- they're = they are、their = 彼らの、there = そこに。 They're in the car. / Their car is red. / The car is over there. - 短縮形:they're(they are)、they've(they have)、they'll(they will)、they'd(they would / they had)。話しことばや、くだけた文章で使います - they've は、現在完了の have です:they've saved some for us (24.30)。they've = they have であって、所有の their ではありません - 改まった文章では、They are や They have と、短縮しないで書きます
- 24.13:My host parents said that they would drive me to school, but they forgot. 二つの they は、どちらも host parents(ホストの両親)です - 24.7:Kenta's parents are in Osaka, and he calls them every Sunday. them = Kenta's parents。 The teachers told the students that they would be late.(遅れるのは、先生か、学生か)。 The teachers told the students that the students would be late. I met the students, and they told me ... (24.15)
- Somebody called, and they left a message. (24.12)。 - Everyone has their own idea. / If a student is late, tell them to sit down.(遅れた学生がいたら、座るように言ってください) - 動詞は、ひとりのときも複数の形です:they are、they were、they have。 Sam is my friend. They are from Toronto. A student should read their book. → Students should read their books.
- They say that it will rain on Friday. (24.11) =「金曜日は雨が降るそうです」 - They say practice makes perfect.(練習は人を完璧にすると言われている) - They speak French in Quebec.(ケベックではフランス語を話す) - They closed the road.(道路が閉鎖された。 や It is said that ... The weather service says that it will rain.(気象サービスは、雨が降ると言っています)。
8. they と that の節、時制
- My host parents said that they would drive me to school (24.13)。will → would - I met the students ..., and they told me that they were looking for their teacher. (24.15)。are looking → were looking - You said that they were noisy. (24.21)。 They said that they were tired.(言った人たちと、疲れていた人たちは、同じ人たちかもしれませんし、別かもしれません。 They told me that they live in Vancouver.
9. but / so / and のあとの they
so や and も同じです:
- 24.13:... would drive me to school, but they forgot. × ... but forgot.(主語が同じなら、コンマなしで省くこともできます:They came but did not stay.) - 24.8:Anna and Lucas do not have a car, so they take the bus. so のあとに主語が必要です。× ... so take the bus. - 24.6:The cows are big, but they are gentle.(the cows と they は同じなので、They are big but gentle.
(Common Mistakes):
- They is students. → They are students. - They lives in Vancouver. → They live in Vancouver. - They has a car. → They have a car. - I know they. → I know them. - Tell they that the test is on Monday. → Tell them that the test is on Monday. - Them are my friends. → They are my friends. - They house is big. / Them house is big. → Their house is big. - These books are their. → These books are theirs. - They made the cake by theirselves. → They made the cake by themselves. - There house is big. / They're house is big. → Their house is big. - Their in Osaka. → They're in Osaka. - Look at the students over their. → Look at the students over there. - My parents they live in Osaka. → My parents live in Osaka. - It rains on Friday, they say it. → They say that it will rain on Friday. - Do they lives here? / Does they live here? → Do they live here? - Somebody called, and he or she left a message. が不自然なとき → Somebody called, and they left a message.

The neighbours? They're nice.(ご近所? My parents live in Osaka. According to the weather service, ...(気象サービスによると)。 I'm Sam, and I use they/them.(サムです。 メールの署名やプロフィールに、she/her、he/him、they/them と書く人もいます。 Which pronouns do you use?(どの代名詞を使いますか) - 作文や英語の試験では、ひとりを指す they を認めない先生もいます。 A student should read their book. Students should read their books. They say it will rain.(雨が降るそうです)と言うと、相手は、Do they? / They're always saying that!(そう言ってるね。 My host parents are very kind. They always ask about my family.(ホストの両親はとても親切です。

The Walrus and the Carpenter Were walking close at hand; They wept like anything to see Such quantities of sand: 'If this were only cleared away,' They said, 'it would be grand!' 'If seven maids with seven mops Swept it for half a year, Do you suppose,' the Walrus said, 'That they could get it clear?' 'I doubt it,' said the Carpenter, And shed a bitter tear.
They wept like anything ... / They said, 'it would be grand!' The Walrus and the Carpenter The Walrus and the Carpenter で、動詞は were walking です。
That they could get it clear?' Do you suppose,' the Walrus said,
If this were only cleared away,' They said, 'it would be grand!'
If seven maids ... swept it for half a year, do you suppose that they could get it clear? swept は sweep(掃く)の過去形です。do you suppose that ... do you suppose と that の間に、the Walrus said という語りが入っているので、少し離れて見えます。
I doubt it,' said the Carpenter。 泣いている二人の様子は、3 行目の They wept like anything と、12 行目の shed a bitter tear の間で、つながっています。
like anything =「猛烈に」。
- The Walrus and the Carpenter Were walking close at hand:The Walrus and the Carpenter = セイウチと大工(複数の主語)。Were walking = 過去進行形 (Lesson 2 の be)。 at hand = 手の届くところに - They wept like anything to see Such quantities of sand:They = セイウチと大工 (規則 1)。wept = weep(泣く)の過去形。 to see = 見て(感情の理由の to。Lesson 12)。such quantities of sand = これほどたくさんの砂。 quantities = 量(複数形) - 'If this were only cleared away,' They said, 'it would be grand!':If this were only cleared away = もしこれが取り除かれさえすれば。 it would be grand = それはすばらしいだろう。grand = すばらしい - 'If seven maids with seven mops Swept it for half a year,:If seven maids ... swept it = もし七人の女中が、これを掃いたら。with seven mops = 七本のモップで(道具の with。Lesson 17)。swept = sweep の過去形。for half a year = 半年の間(Lesson 14 の for) - Do you suppose,' the Walrus said, 'That they could get it clear?':Do you suppose that ...? that = 接続詞 (Lesson 22)。they = seven maids (規則 5)。 get it clear = それをきれいにする。 の状態にする」 - 'I doubt it,' said the Carpenter:I doubt it = 私はそれを疑う(そうは思わない)。said the Carpenter = 大工が言った(said + 主語の語順は、文学でよく見られます) - And shed a bitter tear:shed = 流す(shed の過去形は shed で、現在形と同じです)。 a bitter tear = 苦い涙

- 物を受ける they / them:I sent them on Saturday (24.17) の them = the farm photos。She says they are wonderful (24.17) の they = the photos。Did your host parents see them too? It ではありません - 人を受ける they:They showed the photos to their neighbours (24.19)。They = your host parents (= Kenta's host parents)。 They always ask about your family (24.20) の They も、host parents です(規則 5) - 動詞は複数の形:they are (24.17, 24.21)、they were (24.21)、They have a big dog (24.22)、They always ask (24.20)、They showed (24.19)。have に -s は付かず(× They has)、一般動詞にも付きません(× They asks)(規則 2) - 短い答え:Yes, they are. Are your host parents kind? You said that they were noisy. (24.21)。 この they = Lucas's neighbours。 同じ they でも、指す人たちが変わっています(規則 5) - 目的語の them / 所有の their:talk to them, but I do not know their names (24.22)。them = neighbours、their names = neighbours の名前。to のあとなので them です(× to they)(規則 3)。but のあとに主語 I が必要です(Lesson 23) - ひとりを指す they:Someone left a bag ... (24.23)。They sat next to me on Friday. (24.24)。ask them after class (24.25)。they / them = the new student(新しい学生ひとり)。 They are in my class.(その人は私のクラスにいます)(規則 6) - 世間の人々を指す they:They say that it will rain this afternoon. (24.26)。 アンナは 24.27 で、Who are "they"? Maybe they're the people on the radio. の they're = they are です。They're often wrong in Vancouver の They're も同じ形です(規則 4、7) - 短縮形:they're (24.28)、they've (24.30)。they've saved は、現在完了です (have + 過去分詞)。I hope that they've saved some for us.(私たちの分も取っておいてくれたらいいな)。 they've と their を間違えないようにしましょう - 再帰の themselves:they decorated it by themselves (24.29)。 by を付けずに、They baked it themselves. とも言えます - 二つの文の they:They baked a cake for us, and they decorated it by themselves! (24.29)。 you は単数も複数も同じ形で、two を付けると、二人とわかります - 24.22 の it = a big dog。
/ð/ は、the、this、that、them、their、there と同じ音です。
I know them. /aɪ ˈnoʊ ðəm/ や Tell them. - their /ðɛr/(米)、/ðɛə/(英):弱い形は /ðər/ です。there /ðɛr/ と they're /ðɛr/(米)と同じ音です。 Their house is over there, and they're at home. These books are theirs. - they've /ðeɪv/、they'll /ðeɪl/、they'd /ðeɪd/:they
They live in Vancouver. Where are they? /ˈwɛr ɑr ˈðeɪ/ - they say:They say it will rain. /ðeɪ ˈseɪ ɪt wɪl ˈreɪn/。
- Tell them that their test is on Monday. /ˈtɛl ðəm ðət ðɛr ˈtɛst ɪz ɑn ˈmʌndeɪ/:them、that、their - The cows are big, but they are gentle. /ðə ˈkaʊz ɑr ˈbɪɡ bət ðeɪ ɑr ˈdʒɛntəl/:big と gentle を強く言います(Lesson 23 の but は弱く)。 - They baked a cake for us. /ðeɪ ˈbeɪkt ə ˈkeɪk fər ˈʌs/:baked、cake、us を強く言います。
They made it by themselves. /ðeɪ ˈmeɪd ɪt baɪ ðəmˈsɛlvz/ — they
