Lesson 23 English for Japanese Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

Introduction

I like tea, but he likes coffee. / The bag is small but heavy. I'm sorry, but I can't come. / I'd love to, but I'm busy. 3. not A but B:It is not a dog but a cat. また、not only A but also B は「AだけでなくBも」です。 4. 前置詞の but:Everyone but Kenta is here. / I have nothing but a pen. But why? / Yes, but … / But look! 6. 決まった表現:last but not least、nothing but、anything but。

- The bag is small but heavy. - I like tea, but I don't like coffee. - I'm sorry, but I can't come.

つまり、日本語は「A けれど B」、英語は「A but B」です。

英語は、but のあとが文のときは、主語と動詞が要ります:× I like tea, but likes coffee. → I like tea, but he likes coffee.(主語が同じなら、She is tired but happy.

Everyone but Kenta is here.(健太以外のみんなが来ています)のように言います。

(Key Takeaways):

A but B:日本語の「A けれど B」とは逆で、but は B の頭に付く。I like tea, but he likes coffee. I like tea, but he likes coffee. 語と語、短い句の間は、コンマなし:small but heavy / tired but happy - but のあとの文には、主語と動詞:× I like tea, but likes coffee.(主語が同じなら省略できる:She is tired but happy.) - 反対でないときは but を使わない:「健太ですが、バンクーバーに住んでいます」→ I'm Kenta, and I live in Vancouver. - I'm sorry, but … / I'd love to, but …:断りの前置き。 Excuse me, where is the station? - not A but B(AではなくB):A と B は同じ形。It is not a dog but a cat. / not only A but also B(AだけでなくBも) - 前置詞の but = 〜以外:everyone but Kenta / no one but me / nothing but a pen - although / though と but は、いっしょに使わない:× Although it rained, but we went. → Although it rained, we went. / It rained, but we went. - but と however:but は二つの文を一つにつなぐ。 × It's cold, however I'm warm. → It's cold, but I'm warm.

Section D (文法説明 / Grammatical Explanation)

I like tea, but he likes coffee. (23.1)、Anna wanted to come, but she had a cold. (23.8)、We waited for an hour, but the bus did not come. The bag is small but heavy. (23.2)、She is tired but happy. He was tired, but he is happy now.

- I like tea, but he likes coffee. (23.1)、The shop is open, but nobody is there. (23.6)、I know that he is busy, but I hope that he will come. (23.14) - × I like tea, but likes coffee. → I like tea, but he likes coffee. - × The shop is open, but no one. → The shop is open, but nobody is there. She is tired but happy. (23.3)、He came but did not stay.(来たが、とどまらなかった) - 日本語は主語を省きますが、英語は、主語が変わるときは、必ず言います(Lesson 22 の規則 1 と同じ考え方です)

英語の but は、反対のことがあるときだけです: - 「私は健太ですが、バンクーバーに住んでいます」→ I'm Kenta, and I live in Vancouver. × I'm Kenta, but I live in Vancouver.(but を使うと、「健太だが、本当は別の場所のはず」というふうに聞こえます) - 「すみませんが、駅はどこですか」→ Excuse me, where is the station? × Excuse me, but where is the station? I'm sorry, but I cannot come. (23.4)。 / We went although it was raining.(規則 6) - 「〜たいのですが…」 I'd like to come, but I have a test.(行きたいのですが、テストがあります)。I'd like to come, but …

4. not A but B / not only A but also B

「AではなくB」は、not A but B で言います。

It is not a dog but a cat. (23.5)、My favorite animals are not dogs but cats. We are going not to the beach but to the farm. (23.12)。× We are going not to the beach but the farm.(to がそろっていません) - 動詞と動詞:She did not walk but ran.(歩かずに、走った) - 節と節:She likes him not because he is handsome but because he is sincere. - not は、Lesson 20 の not です。not は A の前に置き、but は B の前に置きます - not only A but also B は、「AだけでなくBも」です:He is not only kind but also funny. (23.10)。A と B は同じ形で、A は肯定されます(A は本当です)。not A but B では A は否定されます(A は本当ではありません) - 動詞の形は、B に近い主語に合わせます:Not only Anna but also her friends are here. / Not only her friends but also Anna is here. He is not only kind but funny.

but は、all、every、any、no、nothing、nobody、everyone などのあとで、「〜以外」「〜をのぞいて」の意味の前置詞になります:

- everyone but Kenta(健太以外の全員)(23.7)、no one but me(私以外のだれも〜ない)、nobody but him - nothing but a pen(ペンだけ。 I have nothing but a pen. = I have only a pen. - anything but …(決して〜ではない):The test was anything but easy.(そのテストは、まったく簡単ではなかった)。 ただし、改まった英語では、no one but I のように言うこともあります - 前置詞の but は、強い語(all、every、no、nothing など)と、いっしょに使います:× I like fruit but apples. → I like all fruit except apples. / I like every fruit but apples. He is but a child.(彼はほんの子どもにすぎない)。現代の会話では only を使います - Everyone but Kenta … のように、but を含む主語のあとの動詞は、everyone に合わせます(but Kenta は、主語の一部に見えますが、数を決めません):Everyone but Kenta is here. (23.7)

6. but と、although、though、yet、however

It rained, but we went. Although it rained, we went. / We went although it rained. - × Although it rained, but we went. although か but か、どちらか一つです - 同じように、× Because it was cold, so I wore a jacket.(because と so)も、二つ使いません:Because it was cold, I wore a jacket. / It was cold, so I wore a jacket. It was cold, yet we went. It was cold. However, we went. / It was cold; however, we went. - × It was cold, however we went. コンマだけで二つの文をつなぐことはできません → It was cold, but we went.

But

- But why? / But that is not true! / But look at the cow! A: "The farm is far." B: "But it is beautiful." But the farm is beautiful. × But, the farm is beautiful.(ただし、間に別の言葉が入るときは別です:But, after lunch, we went home.)

8. Yes, but … / No, but …

- Yes, but … It is sunny. — Yes, but it is very cold. - No, but … = 「いいえ、でも…」:Do you have a phone? — No, but my friend has one. - I see, but … / I know, but …

9. that の節をつなぐ but

- I know that he is busy, but I hope that he will come. (23.14)。ここでは、二つの文を but でつなぎ、それぞれの文の中に that の節があります - Lucas said that the bus was slow, but that the farm was beautiful. (23.15)。 Lucas said that the bus was slow, but the farm was beautiful.

- last but not least:「最後になりましたが、大切なことを」。 Last but not least, I want to thank my teacher. - nothing but …:「〜だけ」。Nothing but the truth. =「真実だけ」(Section E) - anything but …:「決して〜ではない」(規則 5) - Thanks, but no thanks.:「ありがとう、でも結構です」。 But for your help, I could not have finished.(あなたの助けがなかったら、終えられませんでした)。 Without your help, I could not have finished.

(Common Mistakes):

- I like tea but, he likes coffee. → I like tea, but he likes coffee. - I like tea, but likes coffee. → I like tea, but he likes coffee. - The bag is small, but heavy.(語と語の間にコンマ)→ The bag is small but heavy. - It is not a dog, but cat. → It is not a dog but a cat. - We are going not to the beach but the farm. → We are going not to the beach but to the farm. - He is not only kind but funny also. → He is not only kind but also funny. - Everyone except of Kenta is here. / Everyone but of Kenta is here. → Everyone but Kenta is here. - I have nothing but of a pen. → I have nothing but a pen. - Although it rained, but we went. → Although it rained, we went. - It was cold, however we went. → It was cold, but we went. - I'm Kenta, but I live in Vancouver.(反対でないとき)→ I'm Kenta, and I live in Vancouver. - Excuse me, but where is the station?(ただの質問)→ Excuse me, where is the station? - I'd like to come, but …(止める)→ I'd like to come, but I have a test. - The shop is open, but no one. → The shop is open, but nobody is there. - Not only Anna but also her friends is here. → Not only Anna but also her friends are here.

Section E (文化的な注釈 / Cultural Note)

I'd love to, but … I'd love to, but I have another plan.(行きたいのですが、ほかの予定があります)。I'm sorry, but I can't. / Thanks, but no thanks. Thank you, but I'm fine.(ありがとう、でも大丈夫です)のように、感謝を先に言います - Excuse me, but … Excuse me, but this is my seat.(すみませんが、そこは私の席です)。 Excuse me, where is the station? です(Section D の規則 3) - Yes, but … I see your point, but I think that the trip is too expensive.(おっしゃることはわかりますが、旅行は高すぎると思います)。 The room is small, but it is clean.(部屋は小さいが、きれいだ)と言うと、「きれいだ」を伝えたい言い方になります。The room is clean, but it is small. He is shy, but he is very kind.(恥ずかしがりですが、とても親切です)。 Last but not least, I would like to thank my host family.(最後になりましたが、ホストファミリーにお礼を言いたいと思います)。 英語では、the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth です。 反対なら but、反対でないなら and です - 否定の not (Lesson 20) と but は、よくいっしょに使われます:not A but B。 Are you from Tokyo? — No, I'm not from Tokyo but from Osaka.(いいえ、東京ではなく、大阪の出身です) - この課の Section F の、シェイクスピアの『ジュリアス・シーザー』では、アントニーが、but と yet をくり返しながら、「ブルータスは立派な人だ」と何度も言います。

Section F (文学的引用 / Literary Quote)

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare この引用の前には、「For Brutus is an honourable man; / So are they all, all honourable men」(ブルータスは立派な人だから。

Part F-B (完全な訳 / Complete Translation)

He was my friend, faithful and just to me: But Brutus says he was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man. He hath brought many captives home to Rome Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill: Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: Ambition should be made of sterner stuff: Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man. You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition? Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; And, sure, he is an honourable man. I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, But here I am to speak what I do know.

Part F-C (文学的分析 / Literary Analysis)

He was my friend, faithful and just to me: But Brutus says he was ambitious。

Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?(これは、シーザーに野心があるように見えたか)。

Yet Brutus says he was ambitious。 Brutus says he was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man。

You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, Which he did thrice refuse。この that は、Lesson 22 の接続詞の that で、did see(見た)の中身をつないでいます。 Yet Brutus says he was ambitious

最後の二行は、not A but B の形です:I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, But here I am to speak what I do know。 Section D の規則 4 で見たとおり、not A but B では、A が否定され、B が強調されます。A は to disprove(反証するために)、B は to speak(話すために)で、どちらも to の形です。ただし、B は here I am to speak と、here I am が前に付いています。

hath (= has)、I speak not (= I do not speak)、Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill(語順が逆)は、現代の英語では使いません。

Part F-D (文法的注釈 / Grammatical Notes)

- He was my friend, faithful and just to me:faithful = 忠実な、just = 公正な。 was = be の過去 (Lesson 2) - But Brutus says he was ambitious:But = しかし(反対のことをつなぐ。 says (that) he was ambitious = 彼は野心家だったと言う。 says は現在形、was は過去形:言うのは今、野心家だったのは過去のことです - And Brutus is an honourable man:honourable = 立派な、尊敬できる(英国式のつづり。米国式は honorable) - He hath brought many captives home to Rome:hath = has の古い形 (Lesson 11 の have)。hath brought = has brought(現在完了)。 副詞なので to は要りません) - Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:ransoms = 身代金。 did fill = filled(詩のリズムのための did。Lesson 15)。whose = その捕虜たちの - Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?:Did + 主語 + 原形の疑問文 (Lesson 15)。 Did this seem ambitious in Caesar? - When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:When that = when(古い言い方。 have cried = 泣いた。hath wept = has wept(weep の過去分詞) - Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:be made of 〜 = 〜でできている。sterner = stern(厳しい)の比較級。 規則 6) - You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown:did see = saw(did は強調。 that = 接続詞 (Lesson 22)。 thrice = three times(三度)。presented him a kingly crown = presented him with a kingly crown(現代の英語では with を付けます)。kingly = 王の - Which he did thrice refuse:Which = a kingly crown を指す関係代名詞 (Lesson 13)。did refuse = refused(強調、またはリズムのための did) - was this ambition?:Was this ambition? (Lesson 2) - And, sure, he is an honourable man:sure = surely(きっと)。ここでは副詞です - I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke:I speak not = I do not speak(古い否定の形。Lesson 20)。 Lesson 12)。what Brutus spoke = ブルータスが言ったこと(what = the thing that) - But here I am to speak what I do know:But = 〜ではなく(not A but B の but。 here I am = ここに私はいる。 what I do know = 私が知っていること(do は強調。Lesson 15)

Section D (会話の文法説明 / Grammar Notes for the Dialogue)

- 節と節をつなぐ but:It is sunny, but it is very cold (23.16)、It is big, but it looks good (23.18)、I wanted to make it myself, but my host mother made it for me (23.19)、You can touch the cows, but please do not give them your lunch (23.20)、She is big, but she is not dangerous (23.24)、I forgot my phone, but you have yours (23.25)、I thought that farms were boring, but this farm is wonderful (23.28)、They are still expensive, but we found a cheap one for March (23.30)。 23.20 では、but のあとが please do not give … この場合は、主語は you で、省略されています - 語と語をつなぐ but:They are big but gentle (23.22)。big と gentle は、どちらも形容詞で、主語 They が同じなので、コンマはありません(規則 1) - 断りと前置きの but:I'm sorry, but I don't know much about cows (23.21)。 Section D の規則 3 のとおり、本当にわからないことを言う場面なので、but を使っています - Yes, but …:Yes, but I have my warm jacket (23.17)。 But:But the cow is looking at your jacket, not at the camera. (23.26)。 コンマは not at the camera の前にあります。at your jacket, not at the camera は、「A であって B ではない」を、but を使わずに言う形です(Lesson 20 の not) - not A but B:She is looking not at the grass but at my bag. (23.23)。 「草を見ているのではなく、かばんを見ている」という意味です - 前置詞の but:the little brown cow likes nothing but food (23.22)、no one but me can open it (23.27)。 no one but me = 私以外のだれも〜ない。 23.27 の the gate is old, so … The gate is old, so no one but me can open it. (23.27)。 but と so は、どちらも等位接続詞で、前にコンマを置きます - that の節と but:My host mother told me that it would be cold (23.17)、I thought that farms were boring, but this farm is wonderful (23.28)、I hope that my mother will like the farm (23.30)。 hope のあとは未来の will です(Lesson 22 の規則 8) - 日本語では省く主語も、英語では言います:「大きいけれど、おいしそう」→ It is big, but it looks good.(23.18) - Did you find a ticket …?:Did + 主語 + 原形の疑問文です (Lesson 15)。23.30 の They are still expensive の They は、tickets を指しています。

Pronunciation Guide

but /bʌt/ と bat /bæt/ と bought /bɔt/ を、聞き比べましょう。

I like tea, but he likes coffee. /aɪ ˈlaɪk ˈti bət hi ˈlaɪks ˈkɔfi/ - 前置詞の but:ふつう弱く /bət/ で、あとの語を強く言います。Everyone but Kenta is here. But why? /ˈbʌt ˈwaɪ/ / Yes, but … But look! /bʌt ˈlʊk/

- I'm sorry, but I can't come. /aɪm ˈsɑri bət aɪ ˈkænt ˈkʌm/:but は短く弱く、sorry と can't と come を強く言います。 - not only … but also …:not only /nɑt ˈoʊnli/ は強く、but also /bət ˈɔlsoʊ/ は、but を弱く、also を強く言います。 - nothing but … I LIKE it, but I don't NEED it.

The bag is small but heavy.

I thought that farms were boring, but this farm is wonderful! /aɪ ˈθɔt ðət ˈfɑrmz wər ˈbɔrɪŋ bət ðɪs ˈfɑrm ɪz ˈwʌndərfəl/ — 意味は「農場は退屈だと思っていたけど、この農場はすばらしい!」です。thought、boring、this、wonderful
