"that" は、Lesson 13 で、三つの働きを学びました:指示詞(that song)、関係代名詞(the book that I read)、そして接続詞(I think that he is kind)です。この課では、三つ目の接続詞の that だけを、くわしく学びます。接続詞の that は、英語でいちばん大切な「つなぎ」の一つです。「考えたこと」「言ったこと」「知っていること」「うれしいこと」の中身を、一つの文として、動詞や形容詞や名詞のあとに、つなげます。
接続詞の that の主な働きは、次の六つです。
1. 動詞のあとの that:I know that he is a teacher. / She says that the soup is hot. 日本語の「〜と知っている」「〜と言っている」に当たります。 2. 形容詞のあとの that:I am sure that he is at home. / Maria is happy that her mother will visit. 日本語の「〜と確信している」「〜をよろこんでいる」に当たります。 3. 名詞のあとの that:The news that our team won made everyone happy. 日本語の「〜という知らせ」に当たります。 4. It is 〜 that の形:It is true that Kenta speaks two languages. 日本語の「〜のは本当だ」に当たります。 5. so 〜 that / such 〜 that:He was so tired that he went to bed at eight. 日本語の「とても〜なので…した」に当たります。 6. that を言わない形:I know he is a teacher. 会話では、多くの場合、that を省くことができます。
この課では、ほかに、間接話法(She said that she was tired.)、否定の位置(I don't think that …)、I think so. / I hope so. の so、that の節をとれない動詞(want)も登場します。
まず、日本語との違いから見てみましょう。日本語では、「と」が、考えたことや言ったことのあとに来ます。そして、動詞が文の最後に来ます:
- 彼は先生だと知っています。 - 彼女は、スープが熱いと言っています。 - 雨は降らないと思います。
英語は、順番が逆です。動詞が先で、that の節があとに来ます:
- I know that he is a teacher. - She says that the soup is hot. - I don't think that it will rain.
つまり、英語では「何をする」を先に言って、「その中身」をあとで言います。この順番は、Lesson 12 の "to" や、Lesson 13 の関係詞と同じ考え方です:日本語は説明が先、英語は説明があと。
もう一つ大きな違いは、主語です。日本語の「と」の前の節は、主語を言わないことがよくあります:「(私は)疲れていると思う」「(彼は)来ると言った」。英語の that の節には、必ず主語と動詞が要ります。そのため、日本語の感覚で主語を落とすと、意味が変わったり、文が成り立たなくなったりします:
- × I think that very kind. → I think that she is very kind. - I think that is kind.(これは文として正しいですが、意味は「あれは親切だと思う」です。この that は指示詞です)
三つ目は、時制です。日本語は「疲れていると言いました」のように、「言った」が過去でも、「疲れている」は、そのままの形です。英語では、ふつう、あとの節も過去の形にします:He said that he was tired.(Section D の規則 8)。
語源は Lesson 13 で見ました:接続詞の that は、もともと指示詞で、「彼はそう言った。彼は親切だ」の「そう」が、次の文を指していた形から生まれたと考えられています。

接続詞 "that" の使い方に関する文法の規則は次のとおりです。
1. that のあとは、主語と動詞のある文
that のあとには、主語 + 動詞の完全な文が来ます:
- I know that he is a teacher. (22.1)、She says that the soup is hot. (22.2)、Anna thinks that English is fun. (22.4) - 日本語は、「と」の前で主語を言わないことがありますが、英語は言います:「(私は)疲れていると思う」→ I think that I am tired. - × I think that very kind. → I think that she is very kind. 主語と be 動詞が落ちています - 注意:I think that is kind. は、文法的に正しい文です。ただし、この that は指示詞(あれ・それ)で、意味は「あれは親切だと思う」です。「彼は親切だと思う」と言いたいときは、I think that he is kind. か、I think he is kind. です - that の節の中の語順は、ふつうの文の順(主語 + 動詞)です。疑問文でも同じです:Do you know that this bus goes to the beach? (22.11)。× Do you know that does this bus go to the beach? 「Do you know」の部分が疑問文で、that の節は、ふつうの文のままです
2. 動詞のあとの that
次のような動詞のあとで、that の節が「中身」を言います:
- 考える:think (22.4)、believe、feel、guess、suppose、expect。I think that English is fun. - 知る・わかる:know (22.1)、learn、find、realize、understand、notice、remember、forget。I know that he is a teacher. - 言う:say (22.2, 22.9)、tell (22.6, 22.14, 22.15)、explain、answer、promise、agree。She says that the soup is hot. - 願う・決める:hope (22.3)、decide。We hope that it will be sunny. - 見る・聞く:see、hear、read、show。I hear that the bus is late. - 命令の形でも使えます:Remember that you need a warm jacket.(Genre Section, 22.22)
say と tell の違いに注意しましょう。tell には、「だれに」を表す人が要ります:
- say + that:The teacher said that we will have a test. (22.9) - tell + 人 + that:Lucas told me that he was tired. (22.6)、I told Anna that I would call her. (22.14) - × Lucas told that he was tired. → Lucas told me that he was tired. / Lucas said that he was tired. - × Lucas said me that he was tired. → Lucas told me that … / Lucas said to me that …
3. 形容詞のあとの that
気持ちや確信を言う形容詞のあとにも、that の節が来ます。that のあとは、その気持ちの理由や中身です:
- be + 形容詞 + that:I am sure that he is at home. (22.5)、Maria is happy that her mother will visit Vancouver next month. (22.10) - よく使う形容詞:glad、happy、sorry、sure、certain、afraid、surprised、proud、worried、pleased - I'm sorry that I'm late.(遅れてごめんなさい。理由が that の節) - I'm afraid that I can't come.(残念ですが、行けません。Section E) - 日本語は「〜を」「〜ことを」と言いますが、英語は前置詞でなく that を使います:× Maria is happy about that her mother will visit. / × I'm glad of that you came. → I'm glad that you came.
4. 名詞のあとの that
ある名詞のあとの that の節は、その名詞の中身を説明します:
- The news that our team won made everyone happy. (22.12)。日本語の「〜という知らせ」に当たります - よく使う名詞:news、idea、fact、hope、belief、rumor、story、feeling、chance、proof - the idea that we should go(私たちが行くべきだという考え)、the fact that he is late(彼が遅れているという事実)、the hope that she will come(彼女が来るという望み) - Lesson 13 の関係詞の that と比べましょう。関係詞の that の後ろは、文に欠けているものがあります:the news that I heard __(私が聞いた知らせ)。接続詞の that の後ろは、完全な文です:the news that our team won(私たちのチームが勝ったという知らせ)。22.12 は後者です - 名詞のあとの that は、ふつう省略しません:× The news our team won made everyone happy. - the problem is that … / the reason is that … / the truth is that … のように、be 動詞のあとにも that が来ます(Section E)
5. It is 〜 that
「〜のは…です」と言うとき、英語では、まず It is 〜 と言って、that の節をあとに置きます:
- It is true that Kenta speaks two languages. (22.8)。この It は、あとの that の節を指す形式的な主語です(Lesson 10) - It is a pity that it is raining.(雨なのは残念です)、It is clear that he is tired.(彼が疲れているのは明らかです)、It is important that you sleep.(あなたが眠ることは大切です) - 同じ意味で、that の節を主語にして、That Kenta speaks two languages is true. とも言えますが、長くて重い文なので、ふつうは使いません - × It is true Kenta speaks two languages. は、くだけた会話では聞こえますが、書くときは that を入れましょう
6. so 〜 that / such 〜 that
「とても〜なので…」という結果を言うとき、so と that で、形容詞や副詞をはさみます:
- so + 形容詞 + that:He was so tired that he went to bed at eight. (22.13)。「とても疲れていたので、八時に寝た」 - so + 副詞 + that:She spoke so fast that I could not understand her.(彼女はとても速く話したので、私は理解できなかった) - such + (a) + 形容詞 + 名詞 + that:She is such a kind teacher that everyone likes her.(彼女はとても親切な先生なので、みんな彼女が好きです) - × so a kind teacher、× such kind。名詞があるときは such、ないときは so です - 会話では、that を省くことがよくあります:He was so tired he went to bed. - Lesson 13 の so that(〜ように、目的)とは別です。so が形容詞の前なら結果、so のあとにすぐ that が来て can / will が続けば目的です:I will send photos so that she can see the farm.(彼女が見られるように、写真を送ります)
7. that を言わない形
会話では、接続詞の that を省くことができます:
- I know (that) he is a teacher. (22.1)、She says (that) the soup is hot. (22.2)、I am sure (that) he is at home. (22.5)、Lucas told me (that) he was tired. (22.6) - 省きやすい:think、know、say、hope、feel、believe、guess などの動詞。glad、sure、sorry、afraid などの形容詞。so 〜 that - 省かないほうがよい場合: - 名詞のあと:the news that our team won (22.12)、the fact that he is late - It is 〜 that の形:It is true that … (22.8)(書くとき) - that の節が文の主語:That he came surprised me. - 節が長いとき、または、あいだに別の語が入るとき:He said that, after lunch, we should go. - 二つ以上の節をならべるとき:She said that she was tired and that she wanted to go home. - 改まった文や書きことば:The manager announced that the shop would close.(announce, state, claim, explain, report などの動詞) - 日本語は、「と」を省けません(「彼は先生だ知っている」とは言えません)。英語は、that を省けることが多いのですが、省くと、つながりが見えにくくなります。迷ったら、つけておきましょう
8. 時制:言った時と、言ったこと
that の節の動詞の形は、「言う・思う」の動詞の時制に合わせます:
- 言うのが現在:She says that she is tired.(彼女は、疲れていると言っています) - 言ったのが過去:She said that she was tired.(彼女は、疲れていると言いました)。日本語は「疲れていると言った」と、「疲れている」のまま - 過去のあとの節の形(ふつうの変え方):am / is → was、are → were、will → would、can → could、do / does → did、have / has → had - "I am tired." → Lucas told me that he was tired. (22.6) - "I will call you." → I told Anna that I would call her. (22.14) - "My English is better now." → Kenta told his teacher that he thought that his English was better now. (22.15) - 言った内容が、今も本当のとき、またはこれから起こることのときは、現在形や will のままでもかまいません:The teacher said that we will have a test on Friday. (22.9)(金曜日がまだ来ていないので)。迷ったら、would などの過去の形にしておくと安全です - 人を表す語も変わります。"I like Vancouver," Kenta said. → Kenta said that he liked Vancouver.(I が he に変わる) - 英語は、be 動詞(Lesson 2)や have(Lesson 11)と同じように、時制で形を変えます。日本語は、あとの節の形を変えないので、間違えやすい点です
9. 否定は、前に出す
日本語は、「開いていないと思う」と、that の節の中を否定します。英語は、思う・信じるの動詞を否定します:
- I don't think that the shop is open. (22.7)。「その店は開いていないと思う」 - × I think that the shop is not open. は意味が通じますが、英語らしくありません - 同じ形の動詞:believe、suppose、imagine、expect、feel。I don't believe that he is at home. / I don't expect that it will rain. - ただし、hope は別です:I hope that it won't rain.(雨が降らないといい)。× I don't hope that it will rain. - 否定の答えは、I don't think so.(そうは思わない)、I hope not.(そうでないといい)です(規則 12)
10. 直接話法と間接話法
話した言葉を、そのまま言う形と、that を使って言う形があります:
- 直接話法(そのまま):Kenta said, "I like Vancouver." 引用符 " " を使います - 間接話法(that を使う):Kenta said that he liked Vancouver. 引用符は要りません - × Kenta said that "I like Vancouver." 二つを混ぜてはいけません - 日本語の「〜と言った」は、どちらにも使えます。英語は、形を選びます - 疑問文を間接に言うときは、that ではなく if や whether を使います:She asked if I was tired. / I don't know whether he is at home.(規則 13)
11. that の節をとれない動詞
日本語の「〜が…することを望む」を、that で言うことはできません。want, would like, need, like, enjoy は、that の節をとりません:
- × I want that you come. / × I want that he comes. → I want you to come.(Lesson 12 の to) - × I would like that you help me. → I would like you to help me. - tell と ask は、「人」+ to で命令や依頼を言います:I told him to come.(来るように言った。命令)。I told him that he could come.(来てもよいと言った。情報)。意味が違います - hope は、主語が同じなら to、違えば that です:I hope to see you.(Lesson 12)/ I hope that you will see me.
12. that の節のかわりに、so と not
答えの文では、that の節をくり返さず、so や not で受けます:
- Is the shop open? — I think so.(= I think that it is open.) - Will it rain? — I hope not.(= I hope that it won't rain.) - I think so. / I hope so. / I believe so. / I'm afraid so.(残念ですが、そうです) - I don't think so.(そうは思わない)/ I'm afraid not.(残念ですが、違います) - × I think it. / × I think that. / × I hope that.(文の終わりに that は来ません)
13. that と、ほかのつなぎの語
- that は、事実や考えの中身:I know that he is at home. - if / whether は、「〜かどうか」:I don't know whether he is at home. - what / who / where / when は、わからないもの:I know what he said. / I know where he lives. what は節の中の「もの」で、that のあとの節は、完全な文です:I know that he said it. - to は、主語が同じ未来の行動:I hope to find a job. / I decided to go.
14. コンマとくり返し
- that の前に、コンマは置きません:× I think, that he is kind. → I think that he is kind. - 二つの考えを、同じ動詞でつなぐときは、that をくり返すと、はっきりします:I think that he is kind and that he is honest. - that が二つ続くことがあります:Kenta thought that that book was good.(最初は接続詞、あとは指示詞)。発音は Pronunciation Guide を見てください - 一つの文の中に、that の節が重なることがあります:Kenta told his teacher that he thought that his English was better. (22.15)。二つの that は、どちらも接続詞です。told の中身が一つ目の that、thought の中身が二つ目の that です

接続詞 "that" を使う場面に見られる、日本語と英語の習慣の違い:

The Declaration of Independence 『独立宣言』(1776年7月4日)、第2段落の前半。トマス・ジェファソンらが書いた、アメリカ合衆国の独立宣言の、いちばん有名な部分です。Thomas Jefferson トマス・ジェファソン (1743–1826) が草案を書き、第二次大陸会議が修正して、承認しました。国は、なぜ自分たちが新しい国を作るのかを、世界に向けて説明しています。ここで取り上げる五行の中に、接続詞の that が、四回現れます。本文は、米国国立公文書館 (National Archives) の公式の書き起こしと、イェール大学ロースクールの Avalon Project の版の二つで確認しました。語句は二つの版で一致します。違うのは、大文字(Rights / rights、Life / life、That / that)、コンマの位置(Avalon 版は and の前にもコンマがあります)、そして節の区切りの記号(公文書館の版はダッシュ、Avalon 版はセミコロン)だけです。ここでは国立公文書館の版の書き方を使い、原文の二つのハイフン「--」は、「—」にしました。この引用のあと、文は、「That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, …」(政府がこの目的をこわすときは、…)と続きます(引用の外。国立公文書館の版で確認しました)。

日本語訳はこの講座によるもので、意味を理解するためのものです。
この引用は、一つの動詞 hold(考える)に、四つの that の節が続く形でできています。1行目の We hold these truths to be self-evident(私たちは、これらの真理を自明と考える)のあと、2行目、3行目、4行目、5行目が、それぞれ that で始まります。この四つの that の節は、「真理」の中身を、一つずつ言っています:
- 2行目:that all men are created equal(すべての人間は平等に創られている) - 3行目:that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights(彼らは、創造主によって、奪えない権利を与えられている) - 4行目:that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness(その中に、生命、自由、幸福の追求がある) - 5行目:That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men(これらの権利を守るために、政府が設けられる)
この that は、Section D の規則 4 の、名詞のあとの that(the news that …)に近い使い方です。名詞 truths(真理)の中身を、あとから説明しています。ただし、truths と that のあいだに、to be self-evident が入っているので、少し離れています。同じ「that の節」が何度もくり返されることで、聞く人は、「真理は一つではなく、四つある」と、数えながら聞くことになります。
どの that の節にも、主語と動詞があります(規則 1):all men are created、they are endowed、these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness、Governments are instituted。日本語なら、「平等に創られている」のように、主語を省きたいところですが、英語は、一つずつ主語を書きます。
それぞれの節は、be 動詞 + 過去分詞の形です:are created(創られている)、are endowed(与えられている)、are instituted(設けられている)。be 動詞(Lesson 2)と過去分詞の組み合わせです。「創った」「与えた」「設けた」の主語(人)を言わずに、結果だけを言う形で、この宣言の、冷静で、法律の文書らしい調子をつくっています。
もう一つ、規則 7 とのつながりを見ましょう。この引用では、四回とも that が省かれていません。会話なら、We hold these truths to be self-evident, all men are created equal, … と省けそうに見えますが、省くと、四つの節がつながって見えず、数える効果もなくなります。「書きことば」と「くり返しを作る」ときに、that が残る例です。
最後に、Section D の規則 8 を思い出しましょう。この宣言の動詞は、現在形です(hold、are created、are endowed)。これは、「今も、いつでも、本当のこと」という意味です。1776年の文ですが、「平等に創られた」ではなく、「平等に創られている」と、変わらない真理として、言っているのです。
- We hold these truths to be self-evident:hold A to be B = AをBと考える。these truths = これらの真理。to be self-evident = 自明であると(to + 原形。Lesson 12)。self-evident = 証明がいらないほど明らかな - that all men are created equal:that = 接続詞。all men = すべての人間(men は、当時の英語で人間一般を指す言い方です。現代の英語では、people を使うことが多くなりました)。are created = 創られている(be + 過去分詞)。equal = 平等に(形容詞) - that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights:they = all men。are endowed with 〜 = 〜を与えられている。by their Creator = 創造主によって。certain = ある(はっきり決まった)。unalienable = 奪うことのできない(現在は inalienable と書くことが多く、意味は同じです)。Rights = 権利 - that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness:among these = これらの中に(these = Rights)。are = ある(主語は、あとの Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness です。「中に〜がある」という、倒置の形。Lesson 2)。the pursuit of 〜 = 〜の追求 - —That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed:to secure these rights = これらの権利を守るために(目的の to。Lesson 12)。Governments are instituted = 政府が設けられる。among Men = 人々のあいだに。deriving 〜 = 〜を引き出して(-ing の形で、前の部分に説明をつけ足しています)。their just powers = その正当な権力。from the consent of the governed = 統治される人々の同意から。the governed = 統治される人々(the + 過去分詞で、人々を表します)

この会話では、接続詞 "that" が次のように使われています:
- 聞いたこと・言われたこと:I heard that your class has a trip (22.16)、my teacher said that we will visit a farm (22.17)、The radio says that it will rain only in the evening (22.18)、Lucas says that he visited a farm last year (22.20)、he says that the cows are very friendly (22.20)、My teacher also said that we should bring lunch (22.23)、I told her on the phone that I was fine (22.27)、She says that she wants to see the ocean (22.29)。どれも、動詞のあとの that です(規則 2)。said と told は過去で、あとの節も、話した内容に合わせています。says は現在形なので、あとの節を過去の形に変える必要はありません(規則 8)。22.20 の says that he visited は、「去年行った」という過去のことを、現在形の says で報告しているので、visited のままです - 考えと願い:I hope that the weather will be good (22.17)、I think that it will be sunny (22.18)、I hope that you will tell your mother (22.26)、Do you think that she would like to visit Vancouver? (22.28)。hope と think のあとの節は、未来を言うので、will か would が使われています。22.28 の would like は、ていねいに「〜したい」と言う形で、Do you think that の節の中で、ふつうの文の順(she would like)になっています(規則 1) - 気持ち・確信を言う形容詞:I'm afraid that I don't know much about farms (22.19)、I am glad that you feel happy here (22.26)、I am sure that we can find some (22.30)。どれも、be + 形容詞 + that です(規則 3)。22.19 の I'm afraid that は、「あまり知らなくて申し訳ない」という、ひかえめな言い方です(Section E)。22.30 の find some の some は、some tickets の tickets を省いた形です - 否定:I don't know much about farms (22.19)、I didn't know that cows were friendly (22.21)、I do not feel lonely here (22.25)。22.21 は、「知らなかった」の中身が that の節で、「牛が人なつこい」を知らなかった、という意味です。ここで cows were と過去になるのは、didn't know が過去だからです(規則 8)。cows are friendly という本当のことなので、cows are でも間違いではありません - 命令の形:Remember that you need a warm jacket. (22.22)。remember は命令の形(動詞の原形)で、あとに that の節が来ます。Don't worry! (22.20) は、Lesson 20 の否定の命令です - 結果の so 〜 that:You are so kind that I do not feel lonely here. (22.25)。so kind が原因、that の節が結果です(規則 6)。この that は、会話では省いても通じます:You are so kind I do not feel lonely here. - 目的の so that:I will send her photos so that she can see the farm. (22.27)。「見られるように」という目的です。Lesson 13 の so that です。so が形容詞の前になく、すぐ後ろに that が来て、can が続きます(規則 6) - 二つの that が重なる文:I hope that you will tell your mother that you are well. (22.26)。一つ目の that は hope の中身、二つ目の that は tell your mother の中身です。tell + 人 + that の形で、人(your mother)が入っています(規則 2)。あとの節 you are well は、ホストマザーが、健太に向けて言うので you を使います。健太が自分で言うなら I am well. です(22.27 の I was fine を参照) - I think so.:I think so. (22.29)。that の節のかわりに so を使う形です(規則 12)。この会話では、22.28 の Do you think that she would like to visit Vancouver? の答えです。I think that she would like to visit Vancouver. の短い言い方です - the problem is that:the problem is that the tickets are very expensive (22.29)。be 動詞のあとに that の節が来る形です(規則 4)。the problem(問題)の中身を言います - 省略の例:22.16 の I heard (that) …、22.17 の I hope (that) …、22.24 の I know (that) …、22.30 の I am sure (that) … は、会話では that を省けます(規則 7)。この会話では、すべて that を残して、形を見えやすくしています - Let's:Let's look for cheap tickets together (22.30)。Lesson 21 の let's です。look for = 探す - 日本語では省く主語も、英語では言います:「ラジオでは、雨は夕方だけだと言っている」→ The radio says that it will rain only in the evening.(規則 1)

that — 接続詞の that は、ふつう弱く発音されます。発音は /ðət/ で、カタカナでは「ザト」のように聞こえます。指示詞の that(あれ・それ)は、強く /ðæt/ と発音されます。カタカナでは「ザット」です。同じつづりでも、働きによって、発音が変わります。
- /ð/:舌の先を、上の歯と下の歯のあいだに軽くはさんで、声を出しながら息を出します。日本語の「ザ」や「ダ」にならないようにします。舌を、歯のうしろにつけると、/z/ や /d/ になってしまいます。 - /ə/(弱い母音):口の力を抜いて、短く言います。日本語の「ア」ほどはっきり言いません。 - 語末の /t/:接続詞の that は、あとに続く語が子音のとき、/t/ をほとんど言わないことがあります:I think that he is kind. は、/aɪ ˈθɪŋk ðə hi ɪz ˈkaɪnd/ のように聞こえます。母音が続くとき、/t/ はあとの語にくっつきます:that I → 「ザタイ」のように聞こえます。 - 「ザット」と、強く言わないようにします。I think that he is kind. の that を、「ザット」と言うと、「あれ」の意味の指示詞に聞こえます。 - /θ/ と /ð/ の連続:think that /θɪŋk ðət/ は、/θ/(息だけ)のあとに /ð/(声あり)が来ます。どちらも、舌先を歯のあいだにはさみます。ゆっくり、練習しましょう。
つながりの文で、よく使う動詞の発音:
- thought /θɔt/(think の過去):「ソート」ではなく、舌先を歯のあいだにはさんで /θ/ を言います。sought /sɔt/ と聞き比べましょう。 - said /sɛd/:「セッド」。say /seɪ/ とは母音が違います。 - told /toʊld/:語末の /ld/ を、舌先を歯ぐきにつけたまま言います。 - hope /hoʊp/:語末の /p/ は、息だけで言い、母音「オ」を足しません。 - sure /ʃʊr/(イギリス英語では /ʃɔː/ または /ʃʊə/):sh の音で始まります。 - afraid /əˈfreɪd/:強く言うのは、fraid の部分です。
強い形と弱い形:
- 接続詞の that:弱く /ðət/。I know that he is a teacher. /aɪ ˈnoʊ ðət hi ɪz ə ˈtitʃər/ - 指示詞の that:強く /ðæt/。I know that teacher. /aɪ ˈnoʊ ˈðæt ˈtitʃər/ - 二つ続くとき:I think that that book is good. /aɪ ˈθɪŋk ðət ˈðæt ˈbʊk ɪz ˈɡʊd/。一つ目は接続詞なので弱く /ðət/、二つ目は指示詞なので強く /ðæt/ です。
つなげて言う:
- I think so. /aɪ ˈθɪŋk ˈsoʊ/:think と so を強く言います。that の節のかわりの so は、強い音です。 - I'm afraid that I can't come. /aɪm əˈfreɪd ðət aɪ ˈkænt ˈkʌm/:that は短く弱く、「アイム アフレイド ザト アイ…」のように、続けて言います。
この文を練習しましょう:I think that she knows that I know. /aɪ ˈθɪŋk ðət ʃi ˈnoʊz ðət aɪ ˈnoʊ/ — 意味は「彼女は、私が知っていることを知っていると思う」です。think、knows、know を強く言います。
もう一文:Kenta told his teacher that he thought that his English was better. /ˈkɛntə toʊld hɪz ˈtitʃər ðət hi ˈθɔt ðət hɪz ˈɪŋɡlɪʃ wʌz ˈbɛtər/ — 意味は「健太は先生に、自分の英語はよくなったと思う、と言いました」です。told、thought、English、better を強く言います。
