Lesson 21 English for Japanese Speakers: A Latinum Institute Language Course

Introduction

We are students. / We live here. Come with us. / Tell us. our teacher(私たちの先生)、The house is ours.(その家は私たちのものです)。 4. We made the dinner ourselves.(私たちは、夕食を自分たちで作りました)。 5. 短縮形:we're(we are)、we'll(we will)、we've(we have)、we'd(we would / we had)、let's(let us)。 6. 人数と範囲を言う形:we both / we all / both of us / all of us / Anna and I。

(Are we …? / Do you and Anna …? → Yes, we do.)、Shall we …?、each other(おたがい)、会社や店が言う We open at nine.

- We go to school every day. - Our teacher is kind. - She gave us some tea.

- Anna and I live here. → We live here.(私 + アンナ) - You and I are friends. → We are friends.(私 + あなた) - Lucas and I went to the beach. → We went to the beach.(私 + ルーカス)

us、our、ours、ourselves は、we の仲間の語です。

要点 (Key Takeaways):

- we(私たちは)+ 複数の形の動詞:We are students. / We have time. / We go. × We is、× We am、× We has、× We goes - us(私たちを・に)は、動詞や前置詞のあと:Come with us. / She gave us tea. / for us。× with we、× give we - our(私たちの)は名詞の前、ours(私たちのもの)は単独:our teacher / The house is ours. × the car is our - ourselves(自分たち自身):We made it ourselves. / We enjoyed ourselves. × We enjoyed us. - 短縮形:we're /wɪr/、we'll /wiːl/、we've /wiːv/、we'd /wiːd/、let's /lɛts/。we're は were(was の複数)と、we'll は well(よく)と、つづりと音が似ているので注意:× Were happy → We're happy. We both like fish. / Both of us like fish. / We all agreed. / Anna and I went. × Me and Anna went(くだけた話し言葉で聞こえますが、書くときは避けましょう) - 質問と答え:Are you and Anna friends? → Yes, we are. / Do you and Lucas like fish? → No, we don't. 「あなたたち」に聞かれたら、答えは we - 日本語で主語を省く文でも、英語では we を言う:× Went to the park yesterday. → We went to the park yesterday. he(ヒー)とは違う語

Section D (文法説明 / Grammatical Explanation)

1. 主語の we

- be 動詞は are(現在)と were(過去):We are students. (21.1)、We are not late. (21.7)、our friends were waiting (21.14) の were は、friends が主語です。we の過去は We were です - 一般動詞は、-s をつけない形:We live here. (21.2)、We like this song. (21.5)、We have time. (21.7)。× We lives、× We likes、× We has - 過去は、主語に関係なく同じ形:We went to the park. (21.9)、We made the dinner. (21.10)、We arrived. (21.14) - 否定は do not(Lesson 20):we do not cook it (21.13)、We do not know. 短縮形は don't:We don't know. - 疑問文は、Are we …? / Do we …? の順:Are we late? / Do we have time?(Lesson 15) - 未来は will:We will call you. If we leave now, we will not miss the bus.

Tell us. / She gave us some tea. (21.8)。 Come with us. (21.4)、waiting for us (21.14)、Both of us (21.13)。× with we、× for we、× of we - Let us の短縮形が let's (21.12)。Let's の 's は、us の短縮です:× Let's us go。Let's go. で、Let's の中に us が入っています - 文のはじめには来ません:× Us are students. → We are students.

- our + 名詞:Our teacher is kind. (21.3)、our friends (21.14)、our school、our house。名詞の前には、必ず our を置きます:× We teacher - ours(単独):The house is ours. (21.6)。That is our house. = That house is ours. 同じ意味です - × The house is our. / × The house is ours house. ours のあとには名詞が来ません - 日本語の「うちの母」は、英語では my mother です。

- We made the dinner ourselves. (21.10)。 We ourselves made the dinner. とも言えます - by ourselves = 自分たちだけで:We went by ourselves.(私たちだけで行った) - enjoy ourselves = 楽しむ:We enjoyed ourselves. × We enjoyed us. We enjoyed the party. We help each other.(私たちは、おたがいを助ける)と We help ourselves.(食べ物などを、自分たちで取って食べる)は違う意味です

- we are → we're /wɪr/:We're students. We're not late. - we will → we'll /wiːl/:We'll call you tomorrow. (21.11) - we have → we've /wiːv/:We've finished.(have は Lesson 11) - we would / we had → we'd /wiːd/:We'd like some tea.(私たちは、お茶がほしいのですが) - let us → let's /lɛts/ (21.12) - 注意:× Were happy は誤りです。were /wɜr/ は be の過去(複数)で、we're /wɪr/ は we are です。We're happy.(私たちは幸せです)と We were happy.(私たちは幸せでした)は、別の文です - 注意:we'll と well は、つづりが似ています。We'll see.(まあ、様子を見ましょう)と、Well, ...(えーと、)は、別の語です - アポストロフィ(')を忘れない:× Well call you. → We'll call you.

- we both(私たち二人とも):We both like fish. 位置は、we のすぐあとです - both of us(私たち二人とも):Both of us like fish. (21.13)。of のあとは、us です:× both of we - we all / all of us(私たちみんな):We all agreed. / All of us agreed. 二人のときは both です - A and I:主語のとき、Anna and I went. 目的語のとき、with Anna and me。× Me and Anna went、× with Anna and I 自分を最後に言うのが礼儀です - we と everyone:Everyone is here.(everyone は単数の扱い)と We are all here.(私たちはみんなここにいる)。 か We all came.

Are you and Anna friends?(あなたとアンナは友だちですか) - 答えるときは、聞き手 + 話し手 → we:Yes, we are. / No, we aren't. - Do you and Lucas like fish? → Yes, we do. / No, we don't. Are Anna and Maria friends? → Yes, they are. Shall we go? Shall we start?(〜しましょうか)。Let's go. Yes, let's. / No, let's not.(Lesson 20)

We went to the beach, and we had lunch there.(日本語は「浜辺へ行って、そこで昼ごはんを食べました」と、省けます) - ただし、and のあとの動詞が、同じ主語で近い場合は省けます:We went to the beach and had lunch there. We open at nine. / We accept cards.(Section E)

(Common Mistakes):

- Us are students. → We are students. - Our go to school every day. → We go to school every day. - We is happy. / We am happy. → We are happy. - We has a car. → We have a car. - We goes to the park. → We go to the park. - Please help we. → Please help us. - The teacher gave we homework. → The teacher gave us homework. - This is we house. → This is our house. - The car is our. → The car is ours. - We enjoyed us. → We enjoyed ourselves. - Let's us go. → Let's go. / Let us go. - Went to the park yesterday. → We went to the park yesterday. - Were happy. → We're happy. - Well call you. → We'll call you. - Me and Anna went to the beach. → Anna and I went to the beach. - Both of we like fish. → Both of us like fish. - We both of like fish. → We both like fish. / Both of us like fish. - Everyone are here. → Everyone is here. / We are all here. - Are you and Anna friends? Yes, you are. → Are you and Anna friends? Yes, we are.

Section E (文化的な注釈 / Cultural Note)

より I think … We think … 店の人が客に、We open at nine.(九時に開店します)、We accept credit cards.(クレジットカードが使えます)、We're closed on Sundays.(日曜日は休みです)と言うのは、店や会社を代表して、we を使っているのです。看板の We're open.(営業中)や We're hiring.(スタッフ募集中)も同じです。 これを「王の we(the royal we)」と呼びます。 How are we feeling today?(今日の調子はどうですか)と言うことがあります。 We the People of the United States, … Let's go! / Let's eat! / Let's not be late.(遅れないようにしましょう)。 I'm sorry, I can't.(Lesson 20)のように理由をつけます。

Section F (文学的引用 / Literary Quote)

二つの写しは、語句が一部違います(例:Nicolay copy の「This we may, in all propriety do」は、Bliss copy では「It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this」)が、この箇所の we は、どちらの写しでも七回です。

Part F-A (対照テキスト / Interlinear Text)

Now さて we 私たちは are (—) engaged かかわって in (の中に) a (—) great 大きな civil 国内の war 戦争に, testing 試して whether かどうか that その nation 国が, or あるいは any どんな nation 国でも so そのように conceived 生み出され and そして so そのように dedicated ささげられた, can できる long 長く endure 続く. We 私たちは are (—) met 集まって on (の上に) a (—) great 大きな battle-field 戦場 of (の) that その war 戦争. We 私たちは have (完了) come 来て to (不定詞) dedicate ささげる a (—) portion 一部を of (の) that その field 戦場, as (として) a (—) final 最後の resting 休息の place 場所 for (のための) those その人々 who (—) here ここで gave 与えた their 彼らの lives 命を that (ために) that その nation 国が might (—) live 生きる. It (—) is (—) altogether まったく fitting ふさわしく and そして proper 適切 that (という) we 私たちが should (べき) do する this これを. Part F-B (完全な訳 / Complete Translation)

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground.

Part F-C (文学的分析 / Literary Analysis)

1行目の Now we are engaged、3行目の We are met、4行目の We have come、5行目の that we should do this、そして最後の行で、we can not が三回です。

主語は、We are / We have の形で、Section D の規則 1 の、we + 複数の動詞の形です。

we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground。 can not は、助動詞のあとの not で、do は要りません(Lesson 20 の規則 3)。

Now we are engaged in a great civil war、4行目は We have come to dedicate a portion of that field です。

Part F-D (文法的注釈 / Grammatical Notes)

- Now we are engaged in a great civil war:we are engaged = 私たちはかかわっている(be + 過去分詞。 a great civil war = 大きな内戦 - testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure:testing = 試している(-ing の形で、前の文に説明をつけ足しています)。 can long endure = 長く続くことができる - We are met on a great battle-field of that war:are met = 集まっている(古い言い方で、いまの We have met や We are meeting に近い意味です)。battle-field = 戦場。of that war = その戦争の - We have come to dedicate a portion of that field:have come = 来た(現在完了)。 a portion of 〜 = 〜の一部 - as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live:as 〜 = 〜として。 those who 〜 = 〜した人々。here gave their lives = ここで命をささげた。that that nation might live = その国が生きるために(最初の that は「〜するために」、二つ目の that は「その」です) - It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this:altogether = まったく。 that we should do this = 私たちがこれをするべきだということは。 do this = これをする。It は、あとの that 〜 の内容を指す形式的な主語です - But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground:in a larger sense = もっと大きな意味では。

Section D (手紙の文法説明 / Grammar Notes for the Letter)

- 主語の we:We have a new schedule (21.16)、we are very busy (21.16)、we eat together (21.17)、We sit together (21.18)、we help each other (21.18)、we went to the beach (21.19)、We swam (21.21)、we had lunch (21.21)、We are from Japan (21.24)、We have a friend (21.25)、We were so tired (21.26)、we will visit you (21.27)、We want to hear (21.28)、We will call you (21.29)、We both miss you (21.30)。 We swam、we went、we had swam は swim の過去形で、went は go の過去形です - 目的語の us:kind to us (21.17)、cooks dinner for us (21.17)、drove us there (21.20)、asked us (21.24)、write to us (21.28)。 drove us there の us は、「私たちを」です。asked us は「私たちにたずねた」 - 所有の our:Our host mother (21.17)、our school trip (21.26)、Our daughter (21.25)。 ours = our lunch。Their lunch was big, but ours was better. Their と ours が対になっています - ourselves:Anna and I made the sandwiches ourselves (21.22)。 Anna and I は、「アンナと私」を、自分を最後にして言った形です(規則 6) - Lucas and I are friends now (21.18):I が主語です。× Lucas and me are friends. このあとの We sit together は、Lucas and I を we で受けています - each other:we help each other with English (21.18)。each other = おたがい。 help ... with English = 英語のことで助ける - Last Saturday (21.19):Last + 曜日で、「先週の土曜日」です。of や on をつけません:× on last Saturday - 21.20 の Lucas's father:'s は、「〜の」を表します。 We were not late の were は we の過去です(規則 1) - ほかのクラスと比べる文:Another class was there. (21.23)。another class は単数なので、was です。Their lunch was big, but ours was better! = ours は our lunch です - 引用符のある文:a man asked us, "Where are you from?" (21.24)。Where are you from? 答えは "We are from Japan," と、we にします(規則 7)。we said は、引用のあとの形で、we + said の順です。He said, "We have a friend in Tokyo." Do you remember our school trip to Kyoto? (21.26)。 二人が答えるなら、Yes, we do. We were so tired, but we were also happy. では、were は we の過去、so は「とても」、also は「〜も」です。but の前後で、tired と happy が対になっています - 未来:so we will visit you next summer (21.27)、We will call you after dinner (21.29)。we will。 Lucas wants to see Tokyo 主語が we の文との違いを確認しましょう:We want to hear (21.28) - 依頼:Please write to us soon. (21.28)。 soon = すぐに - Let's:Let's talk on the phone (21.29)。 (Lesson 18) - both:We both miss you very much. (21.30)。 × very miss - 手紙の形:Dear Yuki and Daichi, (手紙のはじめ)と Your friend, Kenta (手紙のおわり)。

Pronunciation Guide

- we と he:we /wi/ は、はじめに唇を丸める音があります。

- our /ˈaʊər/ または /ɑr/:会話では、are /ɑr/ と同じように言うことが多くあります。 - we're /wɪr/:we are の短縮形です。were /wɜr/(be の過去)と、母音が違います。 - we'll /wiːl/:we will の短縮形です。 we'll の母音は、we と同じ長い /iː/ です。 - we've /wiːv/、we'd /wiːd/:どちらも、we と同じ母音で、あとに /v/ と /d/ がつきます。

We are students. は、We're students.

- let's go は、/lɛts ˈɡoʊ/。 - we are → we're、we will → we'll

We are friends.

Come with us.
